* WWI - 25th Middlesex Regiment. My Experience of Army Life from 7th October 1916 to 25th July 1918, a complete exercise book of 140 pages, presumably written up from notes shortly after the end of the War by an unidentified soldier, beginning with his recruitment in Ashford, Kent in October 1916, page 14 with the heading `The journey & voyage from Aldershot to Hong Kong of 25th Batallion Middlesex Regiment, 23rd December 1916 to 1st April 1917`, 12 pages containing a diary account of the events of 6th February 1917 when their steamship Tyndareus struck a mine off Cape Agulhas, South Africa, with no loss of life, `just as I was coming away from side from watching the vessel ahead, a terrific explosion was heard that shook the ship from stern to stern, and a huge column of mingled smoke & water rose in the air & splashed over the deck bringing fishes with it`, and later four pages with an account of the Happy Valley Racecourse fire on the 25th February 1918 during the Regiment`s time of garrison duty in Hong Kong, a few pen and ink vignettes, one b & w photo of some of the regiment giving cheers to His Majesty the King upon receiving his message of admiration for the conduct displayed by all ranks on the occasion of the accident to the Tyndareus, a related newscutting from the Hong Kong Daily Press, 14th May 1917 pasted in, sundry accounts etc. at rear, contemp. half cloth, sl. soiled and a little frayed at spine ends, 8vo, two much later letters (one incomplete and both possibly by the author of the diary), a modern real photo postcard of Tyndareus and a copy death certificate of private George Thompson Arblaster (died 1915) loosely inserted. The 25th Middlesex Regiment`s Commanding Officer Lieutenant John Ward commissioned the erection of a memorial, sited on the Peak of Hong Kong Island, to commemorate the exemplary conduct displayed by his men when the Tyndareus was mined. By association it also commemorates the Fire in 1918 where Lieutenant Ward`s prompt action saved many lives, though the death toll was 570. Due to the impending British withdrawal from Hong Kong the stone was brought to England in 1994 and now is inside the National Army Museum. (5)

* Glass Negatives. Airships and Dirigibles, early 1900s, a group of nine glass negatives, 5 x 7 in (12 x 17cm), including a good view of a tethered airship at Ranelagh, 1903, with num. Edwardian spectators, the ladies in full-length dresses with parasols, some of the gentlemen wearing military caps and long coats (lefthand side of glass negative broken and missing, not affecting the main image), plus three of British Army airship `Gamma` showing the airship flying over crowds of spectators, many standing in their early open-top automobiles (two negatives with corner damage), a further two negatives showing a large military airship over the sea, with small ships in the distance (both prepared for printing), another two shots showing an airship high up in the sky, artistically framed by trees and foliage, and the final negative shows an airship flying above towers and spires (damaged) (9)
An 18ct gold stick pin set with two rubies by Alfred Thielmann for Faberge, the Russian Imperial crown set with two rubies above intertwined monogram GM for Grand Duke George Mikhailovich, with its original Faberge birchwood box (Illustrated). George Mikhailovich was born on August 23rd 1863, the third of six sons of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikholaivich and grandson of Tsar Nicholas I. He served briefly in Her Majesty`s Lancers of The Imperial Guard, the friend and cousin of future Tsar, Nicholas II and then became curator of The Alexander III Museum, now known as The Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, specialising in coins, of which he accumulated a huge collection. He married Maria Georgievna, the daughter of King George I of Greece, in Corfu on 12th May 1900. They had two daughters, Nina (born 1901 and Xenia (born 1903); his wife and daughters left Russia for London in 1914 and never returned. During the 1914-18, he served as Inspector General in the army and was sent on a diplomatic mission to Japan in 1915. After the 1917 revolution, he went to Finland but returned to Russia in 1918 and was arrested by the Bolshevik Red Guards. He was briefly exiled to Siberia and returned to imprisonment in the Peter & Paul Fortress in Petrograd; whilst in prison, his wife tried to buy his freedom and that of his three cousins for the sum of £50,000 but the Bolsheviks refused and he was shot by firing squad in the Peter and Paul Fortress alongside his three cousins on 30th January 1919. Alfred Thielmann was of German extraction, his father was an engineer in St. Petersburg and he worked for Faberge from 1880, becoming the second in charge of the jewellery department of the St. Petersburg branch.
