He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Gloucestershire Regiment in September 1914 and advanced to Major (10th Bn) on the 25 September 1915. Paterson was severely wounded whilst commanding his battalion at the First Day of the Battle of Loos. The war diary for the battalion records at 6.30am the battalion was ordered to deliver an assault on the first line system of German defences which included three lines of entrenchment at the primary objective. The assault was carried out in three lines, frontage being BOIS CAREE... The attack was delivered at 6.30am on 25.9.1915 with the accompaniment of gas and smoke… the assault was pushed home with the utmost resolution over the second German line into the third, and up the flanking communication trenches to eastwards. In this phase the Camerons and Black Watch co-operated. The officers fell as the position of their bodies showed, leading their men, and 16 out of 21 officers were lost. The bodies of our dead indicated how they died with faces to the enemy… 30.9.1915 very difficult to obtain exact statistics of casualties, having no record of wounded or those suffering from gas poisoning… Major Paterson was severely wounded during this action and taken to a Dublin Hospital for officers, he was later invalided out of the army on 9 September 1916

1943 GMC DUKW 353Registration no. 77 YP 09 (Army registration)Chassis no. 6863Engine no. N/AOdometer reading: N/AMOT expiry date: N/A *Powerful 4,425cc six-cylinder engine and six-wheel drive*Consistently serviced and maintained by military engineers*Low hours/miles as museum piece for many yearsThis GMC DUKW model 353 2.5 ton 6 X 6 amphibious troop carrier was manufactured by General Motors in 1943 and was delivered to the British armed forces in June of that year. It served the 19 Amphibious Squadron of the Royal Corps of Transport but unfortunately there is no record of its war time involvement with the D Day landings. A rare survivor, it transferred to the Royal Corps of Transport Museum in the early 1970s.The DUKW was held as part of a collection at the School of Mechanical Transport in Leconfield and remained the property of the Ministry of Defence. The collection was loaned to the Museum of Army Transport in Beverley, Yorkshire where the DUKW was displayed and kept in running condition until the museum's closure in 2003. The DUKW remained running until it was moved to be on Museum display when the fuel was drained, thus it will require some recommissioning before it is ready to return to 'active service'. It comes with considerable history including a report on its original specifications and its Vehicle Data Card, detailing its movements and commissions and represents a great opportunity to obtain an exciting military vehicle with many uses. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 53/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1983 Land Rover Series III 109' Pick UpRegistration no. DJV 467YChassis no. SALLBCAG1AA170178Odometer reading. 68,418MOT expiry date. TBA*An honest and rugged vehicle with great character*Recent galvanised chassis with good bodywork and recent new interior*Fitted with excellent dropside body and very rare winchThis 1983 Series 3 109' chassis cab pickup is believed to have been restored in the late 1990s when it received a galvanised chassis and the nicely constructed wooden drop side bed. Its diesel engine is of course very economical and it starts easily in all weathers. It is fitted with the very rare genuine Land Rover hydraulic winch - said to have cost as much as the base vehicle from Land Rover when new. This is one of very few working MK 2 winches known to survive. In keeping with its rugged background, it is fitted with a set of ex army wheels and very good Goodyear G8 tyres. There is a newly fitted interior with three seats, in the superior deluxe trim. The body is in generally in good order and the door frame bottoms were refurbished this year. The drop sides of the attractive wooden rear body may be removed in moments to give a useful flat bed arrangement. The mileage is believed to be correct but there are no records and the truck was built at a time before Land Rovers became collector items. The Land Rover benefits from mainly original factory paint and the original stickers in the engine bay seem to be original and untouched. Refreshing in its workaday honesty, this Land Rover is said by the owner to be a faithful friend with more patina than a rusty shovel! It passed its last MOT in June 2018 and has seen almost no use since.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 61/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. An early to mid-19th century shoulder-length portrait study of the Rev. James Beaver; original paper label verso with a short biography of the subject handwritten in ink, gilt-framed and glazed (image size 11.5cm x 9cm, frame size 21.5cm x 18.5cm)Provenance: by descent through the male line of the family. James Beaver (1760-1840) matriculated at Corpus Christi, Oxford, at the unusually young age of twelve, and became a Fellow aged 26. He served as an army chaplain during the War of the Second Coalition in 1799 and as a naval chaplain on board the Monarch during the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. His obituary records 'he behaved with so much courage and presence of mind as to attract the notice of all on board. The officer who had charge of an important gun having fallen early, Mr Beaver took his place, and fought his gun with so great skill and bravery to the end of the action, that he was honoured with the especial notice of of Lord Nelson, and on his return to England had a gold medal presented to him, in commemoration of his heroic conduct.' (Beaver's younger brother, Captain Philip Beaver RN, of Bulama fame, was also awarded a gold (Sultan's) medal for his part in the Mediterranean in the same year.) James Beaver, who was a 'furious enemy of Buonaparte and a thoroughly orthodox hater of the French', was obliged to take up residence in France as Chaplain of Dieppe, where he died, but not before writing a 48-line poem on the awfulness of Paris.
