A JAPANESE SHOWA-ERA SHIN GUNTO SWORD, WITH BRITISH ATTRIBUTION The machine-made blade mounted with brass habaki and seppa, the gilt bronze tsuba with floral castings below ray skin-covered tsuka adorned with cast metal menuki, wrapped with traditional ito cloth and capped with plain bronze kashira suspending Company/Warrant Officer's brown and blue tassel, the whole housed in a brown leather-covered wooden scabbard. Included with the lot is a selection of items pertaining to the military career of 14875306 Sergeant Ian Foster de Banzie of the General Service Corps and later Intelligence Corps, the sword's owner. Clive Robert Benjamin Dunn OBE (9 January 1920 - 6 November 2012) was an English actor. Despite being only 48 and one of the youngest cast members, he was cast in a role many years his senior, as the elderly Lance Corporal Jones in the BBC sitcom Dad's Army, which ran for 9 series and 80 episodes between 1968 and 1977. dating: third quarter of the 19th Century provenance: USA, Rifled, two-stage, round and octagonal, 52 cal. barrel (clean bore, still visible rifling), with foresight and adjustable rear sight; frame with breechloading percussion system, with falling block bolt with lever, the right side marked 'UNION RIFLE'; backward spring lock marked 'GWYN & CAMPBELL PATENT 1862 HAMILTON O.'; walnut butt (signs of use and small missing parts), iron mounts. Coeval serial number '2249' on the various parts. A bar with ring on the left side. Surface with rust damage. Together with the book 'Cosmopolitan and Gwyn & Campbell Carbines in the Civil War', by Thomas B. Rentschler. Several cavalry regiments of the Confederate Army were equipped with these carbines, produced in 1863-1864. See Flayderman's Guide, Eighth Edition, p. 511. length 99 cm.
dating: Period (1603-1867) provenance: Japan, Ichi-Mai Do, also known as Maekake-gusoku. This armour, typical of the Tanegashima marksmen consists of only a breast-plate with a light structure, black-lacquered on the front side with a large, red-lacquered 'Kuwagata-ni Maru-ni-jyuji mon', used only by the Miyakonojo Shimazu clan, a branch of the Shimazu Daimyo of Satsuma family. Complete with Kusazuri with three, five-plate ken provided with a simple Sugake-odoshi lacing in Koto-ito and Takuboku-ito on the borders. Most of the Tanegashima Do shooters were destroyed. The troops of the Miyakonojo Shimazu Clan were well known as one of the strongest troops in the new government's army during the Boshin War (1868-1869), Japan's civil war.Late Edo period. height 62 cm.

The third was a response to attacks on the episcopal party in Scotland by the journalist and pamphleteer George Ridpath.
Marlborough (John Churchill, first Duke of, army officer and politician, 1650-1722) Autograph Letter signed to "My Lord", 2pp. with conjugate blank, sm. 4to, 13th October 1711, written less than two months before his dismissal by Queen Anne, on the dispositions of the army, "As we are now settling the Winter Quarters", he hopes to send the entire list, "the Queen and States have agreed to put as many troops as conveniently may be on the frontier, not only to facilitate the making our own magazines, but to annoy the Enemy and hinder them making theirs, on which the whole of success of the next Campagne... depends", he plans to put 12 battalions and 20 squadrons at Mons and St Gillam", conjugate blank laid down, folds, slightly browned; and an engraved portrait of Marlborough, v.s., v.d. (2).

Mexico.- Shippard (William Henry, Captain, Army officer in the 29th Regiment, friend of George Catlin, 1803-65) [Collection of copies of the art and images of Pre-Columbian Mexico assembled for the putative foundation of a Museum of Mankind in London], c. 65pp., numerous hand-coloured drawings, many with Shippard's autograph notes, most on paper, some on tracing paper, a few printed, taken from various works on Mexico, the Vatican Library etc., some with tears and loss, folds, some creased, also with an incomplete and disbound copy of Catlin's "Letters..." with Shippard's autograph notes comparing the different cultures, v.s., v.d., [1830s].
Nightingale (Florence, reformer of army medical services and of nursing organization, 1820-1910) Autograph Letter signed to "Nurse Wilson", 3½pp., 8vo, Lea Hurst, Cromford, Derby, 13th August 1878, on her and 3 other nurses deliverance from shipwreck on their way home from Canada, where they had been nursing at the Montreal General Hospital, "I cannot say how much we feel what you have gone through so courageously... You do not say where Nurse Styring, Nurse Cross & Webb are. I suppose they have all gone to their own homes", laminated, folds, browned.⁂ In 1878 four of Florence Nightingale's nurses returning to England were shipwrecked two days out of Montreal and marooned for a week on an island. They were rescued by an officer who swam two icy rivers to reach a lighthouse and raise the alarm. They were taken aboard the SS Erl King, captained by Edward Scott, and landed in Glasgow on August 9th 1878, some three weeks after originally setting out.
Peninsular War.- Howard (Kenneth, first Earl of Effingham, army officer, 1767-1845).- Archive of correspondence and memoranda addressed to General Kenneth Howard from British officers during the Peninsular war, including: French prisoners escaping from the village of Codiceira after the Battle of Badajoz, instructions to assemble for marching, dispositions of the 85th Regiment, a request "that you will order the 34th Regt. to escort the French Prisoners tomorrow from this Place to Portaleza [Fortaleza] according to the enclosed Route. The Prisoners are about 1000 in Number"; "Sir William Erskine will observe the Roads that come from... Bacquilla and Gallegos and cross the Dos Casas in front of his Alarm Post"; "Dispositions and Instructions for the attack of the Enemy's works in the neighbourhood of Almaraz and Maravete" etc., manuscripts and letters, together c. 95pp., some marked "Copy", folds, slightly browned, folio et infra, 1811-14 (c. 45 pieces).

A Japanese WWII Kai Gunto, Naval Marine Officers Sword (Katana), with 1934 pattern Toyokawa arsenal steel blade, the faux ray skin grip with bronze coloured tsuka-ito, blackened iron solid tsuba and gilt menuki, fitted with a later saru-te, sheathed within a plain wooden lined black lacquered scabbard with gilt furniture. Bearing an anchor within a circle device to the tang. Length of blade 68.5 cm, overall length sheathed.A private estateThis type of sword was known to be associated with the Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces (SNLF) a unit that later became airborne paratroopers, accredited with more combat parachute drops during WWII than the regular paratrooper of the Imperial Japanese army. The S.N.L.F. sustained heavy losses due to their unwillingness to surrender to allied troops.No apparent defects
dating: 1838 provenance: Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Straight, tipped, single-and short false-edged blade, grooved and with fuller, marked at the tang with the mark of the Royal Manufacture of Naples, mark 'Z' (inspector Antonio Zampognaro) and with the date '1838'. Some pitting. Brass hilt with guard provided with three additional loop-guards, mark 'S.N. 68' and number '419'. Short cap, grip with earlier leather covering and brass wire binding. Iron scabbard with two lugs, with signs of use and time, in old patina. Interesting. See a similar example in 'L'Esercito Borbonico dal 1830 al 1861' AA. VV. (Italian Army Staff, Rome 1998), Volume II, pp. 332-333, with photo. The number 419 marked on the guard could be of papal reuse. length 112,7 cm.
dating: 1848 provenance: Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Boiled-leather helmet with brass mounts, front frieze with the inscription 'Leopoldo II', tricolour metal cockade, complete with black horsehair, brown leather sweat-band inside. Epaulettes with gilded plates and fringes made of gilded threads. Including a gold medal 'Guerra dell'Indipendenza Italiana 1848', another similar bronze medal, a medal with the effigy of Carlo Alberto and Pius IX, all with their tricolour ribbon. The Tuscan Civic Guard was established in 1847 by Grand Duke Leopold II on the model of the Roman one. During the First War of Independence, a battalion of the Civic Guard, together with volunteers and members of the regular army, took part in the well-known battle of Curtatone and Montanara against the Austrian army. The medals presented here refer to this episode. height 36 cm.
