HANS J. WEGNER (Denmark, 1914 - 2007).Set of six PP52 chairs.Oak wood frame, with cognac coloured leather upholstered seat.Measurements: 72 x 58 x 50 cm.This is one of the Round Chair models designed by Hans J. Wegner, specifically the PP52 chair. Like the author's emblematic PP501 chair, the PP52 combines craftsmanship and modernity in an exceptional way. Wegner presents a chair that values natural beauty, beautiful grain and flowing lines, whose geometric expressiveness is tempered by gentle curves.Hans J. Wegner was a leading figure in furniture design, whose ideas contributed to the international popularity of Danish design in the mid-20th century. His work belongs to the modern school, characterised by a special emphasis on functionality. He began his training at a very young age, as an apprentice to the cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg. He soon discovered a special taste for the use of wood, and his work in the cabinetmaker's workshop enabled him to experiment with different types and designs. At the age of seventeen he completed his apprenticeship, although he remained in the workshop for a further three years until he entered the army. After his military service he entered a technical school and then the Danmarks Designskole, where he was taught by O. Mølgaard Nielsen, and the Academy of Architecture in Copenhagen. In the Danish capital he came into contact with the Furniture Exhibitions of the Carpenters' Guild, where he began to show his creations in 1927. During these years Wegner collaborated with master cabinetmakers such as J. Hansen, L. Pontoppidan, N. Vodder, J. Kjaer, A. J. Iversen, Moos and R. Rasmussen, and also with the most prominent Danish architects of the time, among them K. Klint, V. Lauritzen. O. Wanscher and M. Voltelen. The annual exhibitions would give the young cabinetmaker experience of what could be achieved with the combination of design and craftsmanship, which led him to devote himself fully to design. Already in his first pieces, Wegner showed his interest in the concept of "stripping old chairs of their outer style and showing them in their pure structure". Throughout his career, this designer was awarded prizes such as the Lunning Prize in 1951, the Grand Prix de Milan at the Milan Triennale of the same year, the Prince Eugene Medal in Sweden and the Danish Exkersberg Medal. In 1959 he was appointed honorary royal designer for industry by the Royal Society of Arts in London. Today, his designs can be found in collections such as those of the MoMA in New York and Die Neue Samlung in Munich.

La documentation accompagnant la voiture est constituée de la copie d'une ancienne Carte Grise des années 30 au nom de Fernand Vernet ; de l'actuelle carte grise française ; et de la cession susmentionnée.1921 Avions-Voisin C1 LimousineChassis no. 276Engine no. 334With the market having dried up for his hugely successful aircraft manufacturing business in Issy les Moulineaux after the Great War, Gabriel Voisin's first foray into diverting his resources into motor car manufacture was to build the 'C1'. It is said that the 'C' prefix to his number 1 automobile was a reference to his dear brother who had died a number of years earlier. Not for Gabriel the long drawn out process of designing a car from scratch, he cleverly went to André Citroën and purchased the rights to build a larger horsepower, luxury model the prototype of which had just been penned by his designers Artault and Dufresne yet did not fit into that company's general strategy of affordable cars in those austere times. The motor he chose was also something that he could easily build under license with the resources he had at his disposal, being a patent 'Knight' sans soupapes or valveless – meaning sleeve-valve motor. This in itself was quite advanced for the day and since luxury was associated with mechanical silence, fitted his upmarket C1 model well, four speeds and 4-liters meant that the car went well, while the Voisin's four wheel brakes – by no means universal in automobile manufacture by then, ensured it pulled up too.Alongside a campaign of racing to promote the brand, Avions Voisin cars quickly became associated with quality and flair for design, but also associated to the French Government as the C1 was highly used by the French President Alexandre Millerand, then the C3 and C4 were used by its successor Gaston Doumergue. This Avions-Voisin Type C1, chassis number '276', was bodied by the factory as a limousine with internal division, and was first registered as '8786Y5' in April 1921. In 1925, the front axle was updated with the superior braking system of the C3. On 31st March 1932, the Voisin was registered as '3186LS2' under the name of Madame G Cayeux living at rue Pierre Crin in Compiègne. In 1934, the car passed to Mr Fernand Vernet, another Compiègne resident, while the father of the car's current owner acquired it from a Mr Verrier on 12th June 1961 (sales receipt on file). Its owner says that the Voisin was close to original condition when found, albeit repainted in olive green having been seized and used by the German army during WW2. Chassis '276' was then repainted in black and brown, while its mechanicals and interior were kept in strictly original condition, the only modification noted being the fitting of more modern battery/coil ignition system in place of the original magneto. This Voisin remains in a beautiful state of presentation; its paintwork, although old, shows only a few defects of ageing, and above all the car still retains many original elements, including the cloth upholstery in the rear and leather at the front. Recently, the starter motor was overhauled at the ATPR in Fère-en-Tardenois, in order for the car to participate in the making of a film. Accompanying documentation consists of an old Carte Grise from the 1930s in Fernand Vernet's name; the current Frenc... Entièrement restauré entre 2016 et 2017, en provenance d'une éminente collection privée belge, cet exemplaire est vendu avec un manuel d'instruction et ses papiers d'immatriculation ancienne (hollandaise) et actuelle (belge). 1982 Land Rover Series III 88' Half-Ton Lightweight 4x4 Military VehicleChassis no. SALLBBAH2AA176255Engine no. 951224700Rover bosses, the Wilks brothers, saw the need for a tough, four-wheel-drive, utility vehicle to serve the needs of the agricultural community in the immediate post-war years. Given that its inspiration had been the wartime Jeep, it cannot have surprised Rover when their versatile vehicle also turned out to be of interest to the British Army, which began taking deliveries a year or two after the start of production in 1948. Supremely adaptable for military purposes, the Land Rover has fulfilled any number of differing military roles, from fighting vehicle to ambulance, and been exported to countless countries worldwide. Introduced on the Series IIA, the so-called lightweight (½ ton) model was specially adapted for transportation by the helicopters then in service with Britain's Armed Forces, the principal departure from standard specification being a narrowing of the vehicle by 4' (101.6mm), enabling it to be carried two abreast in air transport, while much of the body was made de-mountable. Development of larger and more powerful transport aircraft and helicopters soon made the 'lightweight' specification redundant, but the British Army appreciated the model's stripped-down simplicity and it was adopted as the standard short-wheelbase military Land Rover.Fully restored between 2016 and 2017 and offered from a prominent Belgian private collection, this example comes with an instruction manual and its previous (Dutch) and current (Belgian) registration papers.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Kipling, Rudyard Departmental Ditties, and Other Verses [Lahore: Civil and Military Press Gazette, 1886]. Tall 8vo, one of 500 copies printed [Richards], original printed 'envelope' wrappers designed to look like a bundle of civil service papers, protective folder and slipcase in green half morocco, fold slightly holed, slipcase splitFootnote: Note: This first edition of Rudyard Kipling's 1886 Departmental Ditties, and Other Verses constitutes not only a most unusually presented volume, but also his first independently published work, written when the author was only twenty-one. Kipling, after eleven years' schooling in England, returned to India (the nation of his birth) in 1882 to pursue a career as a journalist. His initial sojourn in Bombay was something of a homecoming, having a marked impact on a young man whose 'English years fell away, nor ever, I think, came back full strength'. In 1894, he wrote of Bombay as: Mother of Cities to me, For I was born in her gate, Between the palms and the sea, Where the world-end steamers wait He swiftly relocated to Lahore (in modern-day Pakistan) where his father had secured him a position as 'fifty per cent of the 'editorial staff' of the one daily paper of the Punjab'. His first years at the Civil and Military Gazette were, by his own admission, heavy work. Kipling quickly learned that that 'a man can work with a temperature of 104, even though the next day he has to ask the office who wrote the article'. It was during this period, in 1885, that he embarked on the project of writing a collection of short stories, Plain Tales from the Hills - some of which appeared in the Civil and Military Gazette as 'padding' before their 1888 publication in a single volume. The present work is therefore Kipling's first work published outside the strictures of his journalistic career. Departmental Ditties is a collection of verse concerned with 'Anglo-Indian' life in the British Raj. It is important to note that Kipling used the term 'Anglo-Indian' to describe British residents in India, as opposed to those of dual Indian and British heritage. He stated that this collection was 'well received', by virtue of its subject matter 'dealing with things known and suffered by many'. His abundant affection for India was evidently governed by his belief in, and adherence to the British colonial system to which his milieu belonged. His work as a journalist in this environment gave him access to local and military information; 'he could talk to anyone, and since he was neither civil [service] nor military he had no institutional rules to follow'. Much of his knowledge of officialdom in British India must have originated from his membership of the Punjab Club. Here he would meet men from the 'Army, Education, Canals, Forestry, Engineering, Irrigation, Railways, Doctors and Lawyers [...] each talking his own shop. It follows then that that 'show of technical knowledge' for which I was blamed later came to me from the horse's mouth'. The verses within this collection delineate the social interactions of his compatriots with (an often self-effacing) lively, satirical humour: By reason of her marriage to a gentleman in power, Delilah was acquainted with the gossip of the hour; And many little secrets, of a half-official kind, Were whispered to Delilah, and she bore them all in mind. She patronised extensively a man, Ulysses Gunne, Whose mode of earning money was a low and shameful one. He wrote for divers papers which, as everybody knows, Is worse than serving in a shop or scaring off the crows. ("Delilah") The highly idiosyncratic presentation of this volume is thus explained by its contents and the environment in which it was conceived and consumed. The verses are concealed in printed 'envelope' wrappers, addressed to 'all Heads of Depa.... and all Anglo-Indians', from 'Rudyard Kipling ASSISTANT. DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION. LAHORE DISTRICT'. Thus, Departmental Ditties is humorously bound as a pastiche bureaucratic proclamation, its presentation thematically aligned to its contents, both of which delight in the world the British Raj had created for itself whilst gently mocking those who operated within its framework. Resultantly, this edition (one of only five hundred) is not only a scarce survival from the author's early printed oeuvre, but an illuminating record of Kipling's formative career in India, and a revealing insight into both the cerebral bureaucracy and sensational tittle-tattle that pervaded the colonial sub-continent.

(album 24cm x 35cm). Note: Construction Battalion 84 was first set up during the mobilisation of August 26, 1939. Originally, the battalion was formed from RAD units as an army force and deployed in the west. On March 22, 1940, the battalion was re-classified to the control of the Wehrmacht before being renamed as the Bridge Building Battalion 84 on December 27, 1940. This album covers their period of deployment in Russia during the Eastern Campaign and shows the rebuilding of German-occupied Smolensk, including construction over the River Dnieper to replace the bridge previously blown up by USSR sappers upon their retreat.
