Marcelino Unceto y Lopez, Spanish 1836-1905, alphonso xii, king of spain (1874-1885), signed and dated 1884; inscribed 'Aquarelle Unceta Schlachtenbild, der Generalstab S.M der Konigs' on the reverse, gouache, 20x32cm.; 8x12.5in. Alphonso XII died when he was just 29. Notable for his whiskers and distinctive because of the red sash that he is wearing marking him out as Captain General of the Spanish Army and surrounded by his generals. He died of tuberculosis shortly before his son - the future King Alphonoso XIII - was born.

World War II - Malta. Approx. 90 completed 'War Diary or Intelligence Summary' sheets (Army Form C.2118) for the Royal Artillery 194 Light Anti Aircraft Battery, [Malta], January 1942 - September 1944, all with ink annotations in a number of hands, each sheet approx 173mm x 285mm and with two small circular hole-punches to top edge, some with light fraying or creasing A detailed and fascinating hand-written record of military activity in Malta during the second world war. A sample diary entry reveals: ''A' Troop were in action in afternoon & claimed 1 JU 88 destroyed, sharing the destruction with the RAF. The Plane had apparently been damaged by the RAF when one Round hit the Port Wing which fell off the plane then disintegrating & crashing on the Perimeter of the Ta Kali Aerodrome' (14 May 1942). . Watts, October 23rd 1942 - May 12th 1943, containing eighty-eight small photographs (generally approx 2.25 x 4.75ins.), showing Field Marshal Montgomery, tanks in action, scenes near El Alamein, Churchill reviewing the Eighth Army in Tripoli at a victory parade in early 1943, the capture of General Thoma, captured guns at Alamein, General Grant, salvage work, wounded and burnt-out vehicles on the battlefield, several views of Tripoli and portraits of friends in Algiers, in 1944, all mounted on card leaves, with captions in blue ink, orig. light blue cloth, oblong 8vo. The Historic Three Vehicle Flags from Field Marshall B.L. Montgomery's staff car, Second World War period and handed to his driver William Hallam by F.M. Montgomery in 1946 as a memento of their many years together during the conflict. Two of twin pronged pennant form, the third of rectangular form, each with applied emblems. Together with the following archive: (1) Soldiers release book of W. Hallam for 13.3.46 with testimonial written and signed by F.M. Montgomery on 2.3.46. (2) Travel identity card for W. Hallam for 16.7.46 with typical stampings and complete with photograph. (3) Soldiers service and army book of W. Hallam with typical entries for 1940-1946 together with a period photograph of W. Hallam leaning against the historic staff car with vehicle flags. (4) War Department driving permit for W. Hallam issued from 1.6.45 - 31.5.46. (5) Br. A.S.C. Regimental Association membership card of W. Hallam from joining date of 1.1.42 and his sleeve flask from wartime uniform. (6) W. Hallam's personal photograph album of the 1939-1945 war and its immediate aftermath. This with many views of the famous staff car in use with "Bill" in attendance. (7) A quantity of loose period photographs from this album, again with many views of "Monty's car". (8) An extensive letter of provenance from the current vendor by direct family descent .
