A banded agate intaglio ring, circa 1840, depicting Prince Frederick Duke of York and Albany The circular banded agate, carved to depict the profile of Prince Frederick Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827), looking right, dressed in classical military attire, engraved to the reverse HRH Fredk, Duke of York, within an oversized claw setting to a polished band, ring size R½ (band misshapen)   By repute, from the private collection of a late well known London-based art historian. Hence by descent. Prince Frederick Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827) was the second of fifteen children of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Now known as “the Grand old Duke of York”, he is most famous for his military career, both the highs and lows. In 1799 as a young commander he suffered military setbacks which led to the creation of the nursery rhyme “Grand old Duke of York”. However spurned on by these difficulties, when he became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army shortly thereafter, he instigated wide sweeping reforms which transformed the efficiency of the British military. Moved by the plight of orphaned children during the Napoleonic Wars, he took on humanitarian endeavours including the foundation of the Royal Military Asylum in Chelsea, London (now the Duke of York's Headquarters). The carving of this intaglio is based on a marble bust by Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841). The bust was commissioned for the Junior United Service Club in 1835-36, demonstrating the Duke's remarkable legacy.

λ&nbspENZO PLAZZOTTA (ITALIAN 1921-1981) ICARUS Bronze Signed and numbered 3/6 Width: 102cm (40in.) Provenance: Obelisk Gallery, London Literature: Carol Plazotta and Richard O'Conor, Enzo Plazotta, A Catalogue Raisonné, London, 1986, p. 161, no. 309 (Similar cast from same series)Italian-born sculptor Enzo Plazzotta Studied in Milan at the Accademia di Brera under Francesco Messina, until the outbreak of the second World War, when he enrolled in the army. He was sent to North Africa until Mussolini's fall, and subsequently founded a partisan movement, which led to his imprisonment. Released from the prison after the war, Plazzotta returned to Brera to complete his studies. In 1957 he travelled to England to present a statuette, before deciding to establish his artistic profile in London, directing his attention towards setting up a commercial art agency. At the age of forty, Plazzotta turned his attention back to sculpting, working mainly in bronze to create sculptures of dynamic human and animal figures, with a specific interest in dancers and horses. Despite many of his sculptures being situated on the streets of London, he maintained close links to his home-country, casting much of his work at his studio in the quarries of Pietrasanta. In 1976, Plazzotta was honoured the title of Cavaliere from the Italian government, acknowledging his services to Italian art. By 1981, Plazzotta's health was diminishing due to cancer, and he passed away within the same year. Plazzotta's work has been widely exhibited globally in Europe, the United States and Australia, and features in several public and private collections including the Vatican, Rome, The Hermitage, Lausanne and The Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane.

Lot 675

19th Century Irish School "Landscape with Mill Buildings, c. 1840," O.O.C., in gilt frame, 70cms x 90cms (27 1/2" x 35 1/2"). (1) Set beside a river and weir, and nestling below a mountain range, this complex of mill buildings has not been positively identified. Nor is the identity of the artist known, but as the style is naif, it is likely by a journeyman painter of the mid nineteenth century. The range of buildings depicted is extensive, with the older watermills on the right, and newer ones, powered by steam engines, on the left. On the extreme left is a building which looks like a military barracks. Overhead, fluffy clouds spin across a pale blue sky. Although the mountains in the distance are devoid of vegetation, there is woodland growth on the lower slopes. A grove of trees has been planted at the edge of the field behind the mills, the perimeter being marked by three gates and reached by a winding road leading from the factory complex. According to tradition, the painting, which dates from around 1840, depicts a view in County Waterford, but the layout of buildings and chimneys does not accord with well-known mills such as those at Portlaw or Kilmacthomas. However, at nearby Clonmel, in County Tipperary, a complex of mills on Suir Island holds more promise. Set between the river and a canal, the principal mill building survives today and has been converted into apartments. Its architecture corresponds with the main building depicted in the painting. On Stretches Island, close to Suir Island, another large mill survives today. The painting locates the mill complex in the countryside, with fields in the background and mountains in the distance. While a degree of artistic licence can be allowed, mid-nineteenth century OS maps do indeed confirm that the area south of the River Suir was rural at that time: the town of Clonmel grew rapidly during the course of the century. Historically, the mills on Suir Island included a tannery and flour mills. One fifth of all flour exported from Ireland came from one mill in Clonmel, with much of it being transported down the River Suir to the Port of Waterford. From the late eighteenth century onwards, but particularly during the famine years of 1843-47, there were food riots in Clonmel, with mills and grain stores being attacked. Given the importance of the flour industry, it was inevitable that there would be a constant threat of attack on flour carts and barges. The army was called upon to provide protection for convoys heading to Waterford by river and road; and so the presence of the barrack-like building in the painting makes sense. If the painting does indeed depict Suir Island in Clonmel, sadly very few of the buildings depicted survive today; the area behind the principal building is now a large car park.

London Gazette, 23rd July 1948 - DECORATIONS CONFERRED BY HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCE REGENT OF BELGIUM, Officer of the Order of the Crown – Lieutenant-Colonel (temporary) Leslie Alexander Longmore HUMPHREYS, O B E. (108305), Special List (Substituted for the announcement made in the London Gazette No 38288, dated 14th May, 1948).Leslie Alexander Francis Longmore Humpreys was born in Budapest on 4th July 1904, the only son of Richard John Edward Humphreys and his wife Elizabeth Agnes Lyons. His father taught English in Budapest later becoming commercial secretary at The Hague, Budapest and Bucharest. Leslie studied at Cardinal Vaughan School and Stonyhurst College then spent a year at Faculté des Lettres in Dijon before moving to Magdalene College, Cambridge. He gained a 3rd class in modern languages in 1925 and a lower 2nd in part two of the history tripos in 1926. By this point he was virtually trilingual in French, German and Romanian. In early 1939 he joined section D of the British Secret Service, the predecessor of the Special Operations Executive making 2 operational trips to the Netherlands and 1 to Poland before the outbreak of war. In September he was sent to Paris with the rank of Major to liaise with the French Fifth Bureau, planning sabotage lines from Paris and later a sabotage network inside falling France. He was evacuated on 20th June 1940 and on the formation of the SOE in July 1940 he became head of its F Section, charged with organising subversion in France. His main principle was that communications are the essential basis of all clandestine work. In December he was moved over to work on clandestine communications (DF Section), a task well suited to his abilities. He visited Lisbon twice during the winter of 1940/41 to investigate reported lines for passing letters, parcels and people into France. Unimpressed by what he found he decided to construct links of his own designing the blueprint of a system that would serve SOE throughout Western Europe for secret travel and secret supply. His first agent landed in France in April 1941 ultimately Humphreys was responsible for establishing SOE’s biggest and best escape line.A strong administrator with a firm belief in maintaining secrecy, he kept his people inconspicuous, and this was the main reason for his DF Section’s run of successes. The effectiveness of his process was demonstrated when one of his ‘lines’ was penetrated by the German Abwher in 1943 and none of the 11 arrested sub-agents provided any exploitable information to the German forces.DF’s methods were sometimes unorthodox, by passing regular, approved channels in order to deliver results. The results of his section were remarkable with several hundred passengers carried without loss and the carrier’s casualty rate of 2 per cent was by far the lowest of any of SOE’s French sections. By the end of the war, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.Post War he returned to the business world but in 1950 he accepted an opportunity to serve in the Foreign Office spending time in Frankfurt, Pusan (South Korea), Vienna and finally London. In 1964 he retired and joined the staff at Stonyhurst Preparatory School until his second retirement in 1973 when he moved to Bexhill where he lived until his death on 19th December 1976.

Pair of Officers Full Dress Epaulettes of the Bengal Engineers, Attributed to Major General William Spottiswoode Trevor VC, Awarded the Victoria Cross during the Bhutan War in 1865, fine pair of officers epaulettes with large bullion embroidered flaming grenades to the centre and gilt buttons for Bengal Engineers. Both with the bullion embroidered tassels to the ends. Leather and satin cloth underlay. Housed in metal storage tin. They remain in excellent overall condition. Stated to have belonged to Major General Trevor VC by the late vendors notes, said to have purchased from direct family descent. Born on 9th October 1831, Trevor’s father was the son of Robert Trevor & Mary Spottiswoode. His father was a Captain in the Indian army, stationed in Afghanistan, his father was murdered in Kabul, both himself, siblings and mother were held hostage by rebels in Kabul, after the retreat in 1842, until being rescued by the British army after the reoccupation by General Pollock’s relief force. Trevor was commissioned into the Bengal Engineers in 1849. He served in the Anglo-Burmese war and later during the Indian Mutiny. He was wounded on multiple occasions during the Anglo-Burmese war and was mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct. In February 1865 Trevor joined the Bhutan field force as field engineer. He was a 33 years old major in the Bengal Engineers, Bengal Army during the Bhutan War when the following deed took place on 30 April 1865 at Dewan-Giri, Bhutan for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross in a joint citation with Lieutenant James Dundas, ‘For their gallant conduct at the attack on the Block-house at Dewan-Giri, in Bhootan, on the 30th of April, 1865. Major-General Tombs, C.B., V.C., the Officer in command at the time, reports that a party of the enemy, from 180 to 200 in number, had barricaded themselves in the Block-house in question, which they continued to defend after the rest of the position had been carried, and the main body was in retreat. The Block-house, which was loop-holed, was the key of the enemy's position. Seeing no Officer of the storming party near him, and being anxious that the place should be taken immediately, as any protracted resistance might have caused the main body of the Bhooteas to rally, the British force having been fighting in a broiling sun on very steep and difficult ground for upwards of three hours, the General in command ordered these two Officers to show the way into the Block-house. They had to climb up a wall which was 14 feet high, and then to enter a house, occupied by some 200 desperate men, head foremost through an opening not more than two feet wide between the top of the wall and the roof of the Block-house. Major-General Tombs states that on speaking to the Sikh soldiers around him, and telling them in Hindoostani to swarm up the wall, none of them responded to the call, until these two Officers had shown them the way, when they followed with the greatest alacrity. Both of them were wounded’.After recovering from his wounds, Trevor became superintending engineer at the Bengal Presidency, and was made brevet major in May 1866. Promoted lieutenant-colonel in August 1874, he held a number of engineering roles in India, and in December 1875 was appointed chief engineer of British Burma, a post he held for five years. He was promoted brevet colonel on 19 August 1879, and in 1880 became director-general of Railways. He then served as secretary to the government of India in the Public Works Department from February 1882 until his retirement from the army in February 1887, with the honorary rank of major-general. Trevor died on 2 November 1907 aged 76 at his home in Westminster, London. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Royal Engineers Museum, Gillingham, Kent.

He then led the attack in person, and despite heavy casualties his company captured its objective, thus paving the way for a successful assault on the main feature. Shortly after daybreak on the 10 July Capt BRODRICK-PITTARD’S company came under heavy machine gun and mortar fire from hills to the north, and the position became untenable. He skilfully extricated the remnants of his company to the main feature where he and hid company joined another company already in position, and subsequently assisted in repelling a heavy counter-attack. Throughout the operation Capt BRODRICK-PITTARD showed outstanding qualities of leadership, and his personal bravery was an inspiration to his men.Originally from Huyton, Liverpool, Harold St. John Brodrick-Pittard initially served in the Irish Guards between July 1940 and January 1942.
