Prussian Pickelhaube helmet, 1860.Metal and horsehair.Measurements: 40 cm height.Prussian army helmet, model 1860, "Pickelhaube". When the Spanish colonies in America became independent, they created their own military academies, where the cadets were trained by instructors from the dominant countries of the time. Thus Chile and Bolivia had German instructors, and Argentina had English and French. This helmet is Prussian and not from another German state because of the base of the plume, which has been used ever since at the Chilean military academy Bernardo O'Higgins. The "pickelhaube" was a Prussian helmet created in the 19th century for the army, firemen and police, and is characterised by its spiked peak, which is entirely ornamental although Paul von Hindenburg suggested that it represented the symbolic link between German soldiers and the Huns. It was designed in 1842 by Frederick William IV of Prussia, and was made of leather with a shiny finish, with metallic ornaments in silver or gold.
