CUSTER GEORGE: (1839-1876) American Army Officer and Cavalry Commander in the American Civil War and American Indian Wars. A good, small D.S., G A Custer, one page, 12mo, (3 x 2.5; evidently neatly clipped from a larger document), Headquarters, 25th November 1864. The manuscript document states, in full, 'Respectfully forwarded approved and recommended'. Signed by Custer at the foot in his capacity as Brevet Major General. With some partial text to the verso dated 30th November and referring to the 3rd Cavalry Division (which Custer was commanding at the time). VG   The year 1864, in which Custer signed the present document, was an important one for the American military hero. He had married his wife, Elizabeth Clift Bacon, on 9th February after having finally gained the approval of her father. Custer was promoted four times in 1864 following various battles and attained the rank of Brevet Major General on 19th October. He had commanded a division of the Cavalry Corps at the Battle of Cedar Creek, a decisive engagement of the Valley Campaigns of 1864 which effectively ended the Confederate invasion of the North. The Confederacy were unable to again threaten Washington DC and the Union's victory greatly aided Abraham Lincoln in his re-election.

Lot 312

GORDON CHARLES GEORGE: (1833-1885) British Army officer, known as Chinese Gordon. Fountain pen ink signature ('C.G. Gordon') on a small piece, presumably neatly clipped from the conclusion of a letter. A light smudge only very slightly affects the middle initial. G

Lot 313

GORDON CHARLES: (1833-1885) British Army officer and administrator, known as Chinese Gordon. A rare 20 piastre promissory note signed by Gordon, the oblong 12mo note printed on a somewhat inferior card and with Arabic text, signed (‘C G Gordon’) in ink to the lower left corner beneath the pale green oval stamped seal of the Governor-General. Some light creasing, age wear and minor staining, and a few traces of former mounting to the verso, about G The present note, an emergency paper money also known as Siege of Khartoum currency, was issued between April and November 1884. Gordon’s currency, essentially promissory in nature, was personally guaranteed with the backing of the Egyptian government. Initially £2500 was issued in notes of various denominations and, accepted by both merchants and sailors, the notes initially provided economic relief and trade stimulus. Around half of the notes were personally signed by Gordon, the others bearing a facsimile signature which merchants were reluctant to accept. Had the currency not been introduced by Gordon the defence of Khartoum would have collapsed much earlier, however after the city was stormed and captured by the Ansar the notes were publicly burnt or left discarded in the streets for cattle to consume. Possession of the notes was subject to an unpleasant punishment, nevertheless some made their way across the desert in the following months hidden in clothing or bags of grain, completely at risk to their owner’s lives.

Lot 314

[GORDON CHARLES]: (1833-1885) British Army officer and administrator, known as Chinese Gordon. GORDON HENRY W. (1818-1887) British Commissary-General, served in the Crimean War. Elder brother of Charles Gordon. An excellent A.L.S., H. W. Gordon, four pages, 8vo, Chelsea, 10th February 1885, to [Sir Thomas Francis?] Wade. Gordon thanks his correspondent for their sympathy ‘and for all you say about my Brother’ and continues ‘It is a sad state of suspense to be in, and we think it not likely to be put an end to for some time. I cannot believe he is holding out. I cannot see how he could do so since the Rebels have artillery. He must, in my opinion, have yielded from famine combined with treachery….he told Wolseley he had only 40 days provisions’ and further commenting ‘One curious thing is that Wilson did not speak of seeing steamers at Kartoum (sic) of which there ought to have been some eight or ten. Probably Gordon sent away the Egyptian families to the Equator. I don’t think that if taken alive, the Madhi would kill him.’ A letter of remarkable content. Two very small, extremely minor traces of former mounting to the upper two corners of the final page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Gordon’s letter is written less than a week after the first telegraphic rumours of his brother’s death had reached England. On 24th January 1885 two steamers carrying British soldiers of the Sussex Regiment (wearing clearly identifiable red tunics) were sent on a reconnaissance mission to Khartoum, with orders from Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley not to attempt to rescue Gordon or deliver ammunition or food. In the evening of the same day the Mahdi met with his generals who advised that, with the Nile low and Wolseley close, the time was right to either storm Khartoum or retreat. At dawn on the morning of 26th January 1885 the Ansar began their final attack by storming the city. After just an hour of fighting the starved defenders had abandoned the fight and Khartoum was theirs. The Ansar took no prisoners and all of the approximately 7000 defenders were killed. On arriving at Khartoum on 28th January, the relief force discovered that the city had been captured and Gordon had been killed two days earlier.

The typed document states 'I confer on the 130 subjects of the German Reich, who are specified on this list, permission to accept the foreign orders and decorations awarded to them. The individual documents confirming this permission are to be provided with facsimiles of my signature.'  At the base of the document is a typed summary of the recipients including members of the President's Private office, the Foreign Office, Army, Navy, various Reich Ministries etc. Countersigned by Otto Meissner (1880-1953, Head of the Office of the Reich President). With blind embossed seal featuring the Nazi swastika and eagle. With blank integral leaf (partially neatly clipped) and with two file holes to left edge, not affecting text or signature. HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. An excellent, large D.S., A Hitler, one page (vellum), folio, Fuhrerhauptquartier, 16th August 1940, in German, being the formal award document of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (Ritterkreuz) to Oberstleutnant Ludwig Schulz. The hand scrivened document features attractive calligraphy by Franziska Kobell, in dark india ink, and Schulz's name appears in gold leaf at the centre. Boldly signed by Hitler at the foot of the document in his capacity as Fuhrer and Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht ('Der Fuhrer und Oberste Befehlshaber Der Wehrmacht'). With integral leaf. Loosely contained within the original folio presentation folder, the red coloured morocco leather bound folder featuring a gilded imprint to the front cover of the Third Reich eagle clutching a wreath encircling the Nazi swastika. The inside front and back covers featuring plain vellum sheets enclosed by gilt decorated red coloured morocco leather borders, one of which bears the small imprinted name of the bookbinder Frieda Thiersch. A rare document, and particularly desirable when accompanied by the original presentation folder. A portion of the thin red coloured string tie is also present, although broken and a little frayed at the edges. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the edges of the document, not affecting the text or signature, the presentation folder with some very light, minor age wear and some rubbing and scuffs to the edges and corners of the leather. About VG Ludwig Schulz (1896-1966) German Generalmajor of the Luftwaffe during World War II. Schulz was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross whilst a Major and Commander of I./Kampfgeschwader 76 on 16th August 1940, as confirmed by the present document, and, as Generalmajor and Commander of a Kampfgruppe in the Luftkriegsschule he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves on 19th February 1945. Kampfgeschwader 76 (KG 76) was one of the few Luftwaffe bomber groups that operated throughout World War II. The three groups of KG 76 supported the German army in the Battle of Belgium and the Battle of France and in July 1940 served in the Battle of Britain and The Blitz until May 1941. On the 13th August 1940, just three days before Schulz was awarded the Knight's Cross, KG 76 bombed RAF Kenley, RAF Debden and RAF Biggin Hill as the Luftwaffe initiated its offensive against Fighter Command with greater determination. Known by the codename of 'Adlertag' ('Eagle Day') the first day of Operation Eagle Attack was not a success for the Luftwaffe and no significant impact was made on Fighter Command's ability to defend British air space. A rare document signed by Hitler during the Battle of Britain. Over 7000 of Nazi Germany's prestigious military decoration denoting bravery and leadership on the battlefield, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, were awarded from 1939. However, only a small number of the medals were accompanied by the formal documents and after 1942 the formal award document was discontinued, and recipients received a smaller and less elaborate document. The production of the formal documents was the responsibility of a small team of individuals overseen by Professor Gerdy Troost, who had been commissioned by Hitler, and included the graphic artist Franziska Kobell, Professor Hermann Wandinger and his brother Franz who were jointly responsible for the goldwork and gilding, and Frieda Thiersch, a bookbinder responsible for the design and production of the original binders which accompanied the formal documents. Provenance: From the estate of a deceased British fighter pilot of World War II who later became a senior Royal Air Force commander, attaining the rank of Air Marshal. The airman was given several commands during World War II, his squadrons flying Hawker Hurricanes and Hawker Typhoon fighter bombers, and he was later stationed at RAF Wahn and given a senior role with the Second Tactical Air Force.
