The diary is started in the hand of Cpl Harris and begins with parade details in September 1899 before arriving at Orange River around 18th November, where they were welcomed by several other regiments including the Loyal North Lancashire. A few days later came the order that Lord Methuen would start the march to Kimberley on the 21st November, the artillery shelling the enemy occupied hills ahead. Harris goes on to detail further skirmishes and perilous marches (a few soldiers breaking legs) before McVeagh picks up the story during an account of the 25th November 1899. He writes until January of 1900 where they met the Highland Brigade near the Modder River. Entries become fewer and the account ends on the 11th April 1900.

DCM obverse lightly polished, war medals with light surface marks, EM in VF condition; Together with War Office M.I.D document, Warrant Officer certificate, photographs, Sergeants Mess presentation mantle clock, and the soldiers hand written and typescript account of his life, entitled "From Month To Month" and dedicated to his best friend during the Great War, Ian McCraig, who was K.I.A May 1918. *Jonathan Bower was born in 1889 and joined the army in 1905. He was posted with the 11th Hussars. Early life in the army was spent in India, where he met fellow signaler McCraig. His account details life on the North West frontier and he has drawn a naive map of patrol routes near the Himalayas. When war was declared in Europe, he was posted with 28th Battery RFA, and arrived in France in 1914. By October 1914 he was involved in skirmishes outside of Mons, and notes in his story that it was here he received his first citation `for laying telephone wire under heavy fire, for the support of the infantry`. After short respite, he rejoined the front at Rouban and Mons. It was here that a Lieutenant Brown and McCraig were wounded. Bower managed to lift Brown over the parapet and to safety. The personal account goes on to detail a tour in Mesopotamia and being presented with his DCM in June 1917 by HRH Duke of Connaught. 1918 saw them being subjected to gas attacks by the Germans and "both sides hanging on like grim death". In July 1918 he was wounded by Shrapnel and spent the remainder of the war in hospital. The final pages explain Bower`s posting at the anti aircraft battery at Middlewood and his life during WWII. A fascinating, detailed account that surely deserves publication.

The later documents relate to the occupation of Germany by Napoleon after he formed a coalition of states in the Rhineland during what is known as the Fourth Coalition period. He wiped out the Prussian army which was a quarter of a million strong and took hold of most of the country and famously entered Berlin on October 27th 1806 – an event reciprocated by Hitler in 1940. Documents from this period of Franco-German history

Lot 263B

India – Anglo – Sikh War a long ms letter written out on 7pp of narrow paper conjoined with an annotation in English ‘From the Seikh [sic] camp at Goojrat captured on the 21st Febry 1849. This is most probably a ration list of the Sikh camp during what is now known as the Second Anglo-Sikh war. Scarce. The Second Anglo-Sikh war lasted from 1848-49 and resulted in the final subjugation of the Sikh Empire and the eventual annexation of the Punjab to become the North West Frontier Province of British India. The Sikh Empire had been successfully built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh but on his death in 1839 it fell into disorder. There were a number of short lived rulers and with the existence of this power vacuum the British East India Company seized its opportunity – building up its military strength. The First War resulted in important territory being ceded to the British. Not being satisfied with the gains already made the British pushed on and this resulted in the second and most decisive war. The Battle of Gujrat was the final conflict in the war in which a heavily armed British regiment under General Gough bombarded the Sikh Army with more than 100 heavy guns. The Sikh Army finally surrendered in March 1949 and the Punjab ceded to the British. Original documents of this nature from the Anglo-Sikh wars rarely appear on the market

Lot 289

WWI the war diary of DM2/163094 Pte Jack Miller Army Service Corps covering most of the year 1918 with considerable entries containing his personal observations of the fighting casualties and events which he saw around him written in a legible hand and covering virtually every day from January 2nd through to October 25th. Together with a loosely inserted photograph showing a group of soldiers around an armoured car with an indication that one of them was Miller himself and indication to verso that it was taken in Egypt in 1917. The diary commences in Jaffa but later Miller is sent to Gallipoli but throughout he documents a considerable amount of important information including air raids and air combat. Later he documents a later surprise attack by the Turks ‘...but the Judeans gave them an awful drubbing and they fled leaving half of their number dead or wounded. We captured 200 of them...’ During April he documents a visit by Lord Rothschild’...all the Yidd boys here have signed to fight for us they are going to join the Jewish regiment when it gets here...’ But later in the month he writes: ‘...we had a great battle today and we have lost a lot of men...we had 1200 losses today and some of the cases have been awful. It reminded me of Gaza. The battle is still going on and we have had to retreat 3 miles. The 58 Indian rifles let us down very bad and they got the Devons cut up very badly there are 2 German Divisions here from the Russian front if it was not for them we should have been well advancing they have a lot of new guns here...’ Later in June he documents on a day by day basis the awful conditions of the trenches and the continual fighting in what becomes a war of attrition. Miller survived the war and died aged 88 in 1978. In civilian life he became a well known boxer boxing promoter and later a corner man for Sir Henry Cooper and many more well known British boxers. He was the longest and oldest serving corner man in boxing and had a boxing club in Birmingham.
