MORGAN AND SANDERS; A REGENCY MAHOGANY CAMPAIGN SOFA, CIRCA 1810With brass inlaid lyre arm terminals and turned supports, 198cm wide; 92cm highProvenance: By repute acquired from The Kepples Head Hotel, Portsmouth, where it was recorded in the 19th Century hotel inventory. The Kepples Head is located 100 yards from the main naval base gate and was regularly used by Naval Officers and Diplomats, prior to embarkation from Portsmouth. This campaign or metamorphic sofa has been associated to the work of Morgan & Sanders (1801-1820), who alongside Thomas Butler and William Pocock were the leading proponents of ‘patent’ furniture in the Regency era. The designs of which enabled the elite army and navy officers to travel in relative luxury. Established in 1801, Morgan & Sanders’ elaborate trade card promoted their business as: ‘ Manufacturers of their New Invented IMPERIAL DINING TABLES & PORTABLE CHAIRS, Improved Sofa Beds, Chair Beds, four Post & Tent Bedsteads, Furniture, Bedding &c. complete at their Upholstery & Cabinet Ware Rooms, Nos. 16 & 17 Catherine Street, Strand’.In 1805 Morgan & Sanders re-branded their premises as ‘Trafalgar House’, taking advantage of the death of the naval hero and their client, Lord Nelson. Morgan & Sanders had supplied some furniture to Nelson’s house, Merton in Surrey and collapsible pieces were used to furnish HMS Victory.Interestingly, Morgan & Sanders advertised their designs in R. Ackermann’s monthly periodical, The Repository of Arts, from 1809 to 1815, who’s print shop on the Strand was located yards from the Morgan & Sanders premises. An upper floor is illustrated in No. 8 August 1st, 1809, and shows a range of furniture, including lyre back chairs. The lyre was a popular instrument among aristocratic gentil amateur lady musicians and imbued with illusions of Classical significance.Condition report: Overall in good condition. The frame is structurally quite sound. The sides ‘wobble’ when stronger pressure is applied. The back is removed by releasing a square screw which is concealed beneath the fabric at the top corners of the back. The arms are released by unscrewing the same type of square headed screw located to the edge of the underside, beneath the arms. The frame has been repaired, repolished and tidied at some point , probably when it was re-upholstered. The one side of the lyre is slight loose (right hand side). Some brass inlay a little loose to both lyre sides with some pinging up. Chip to the back leg foot, inside castor. Various other knocks, dents, and signs of wear commensurate with use and age. The sofa as not been ‘collapsed’ / deconstructed. The upholstery is dirty and dusty. Discolouration in areas commensurate with use and age. Please see additional photographs www.bellmans.co.uk

Charles A Knotek (American, 1933 - 2008) "First Flight of British Army Airship" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media Painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Man's Conquest of the Heavens series issued in 1983. In the early 1900's, Great Britain sent Colonel J.L.B. Templer, the commanding officer in charge of the Army Balloon Factory, to France to meet with the famed dirgible builder, Alberto Santos-Dumont. After consulting with Dumont, and studying his many airships, Templer returned to England and began construction on Englands' first lighter-than-air dirigibles. The airships were unique, in that they were made of a rugged material called goldbeater's skin. After some minor adjustments were made in the thickness of this unusual material, the first airship was successfully completed and was christened, Nulli Secundus ... or "second to none." However, this dirigible proved to be very unstable and difficult to navigate. In fact, on one of its few flights, the airship was forced to make a crash landing and was badly damaged. All of the pieces of the airship were gathered up, and later were rebuilt into a larger and grander airship known as the Nulli Secundus II. This airship consisted of a larger 85,000 cubic foot envelope made of several ultra-thin layers of goldbeater's skin. A large steel understructure was attached to the bottom of the envelope by several wide silk bands. The most remarkable feature of this airship was its navigational system, which consisted of a separate balloon attached to the ships's keel. This made the Nulli Secundus II a truly unique dirigible. David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "George Washington" Signed lower right. Original oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Treaty of Paris stamp issued September 2, 1983. A few times in history, a man and a moment have come together in such a perfect union of temperament to circumstances, that all the world marvels at the accomplishments. Such a union was that of George Washington and the American Revolutionary War. Washington enjoyed no more than eight years of formal education. Yet, he possessed such strength of character that he became a giant in the eyes of his countrymen, to be forever revered as the Father of his Country. On June 15, 1775, Washington was named head of the Revolutionary Army and for the next eight years, he led a rag-tag army of untrained, undisciplined soldiers in a war against the greatest military power of the age. Often, that army was held together by the strength of Washington's character alone. When at last the victory was won and the final peace sealed with the Treaty of Paris, no one was more pleased than George Washington to again become a private citizen. Yet, his service to his country had just begun. On May 25, 1787, he was named president of the Constitutional Convention. For four months he sat at a low dias, taking almost no part in the debate. Yet, it is entirely possible that the U.S. Constitution would not have taken the form it did if this man -- that every delegate asumed would be the first U.S. President -- were not in attendance. Two years later, George Washinton filled the U.S. Presidency with characteristic strength and dignity. Hereafter these qualities have been the marks of America's great Presidents. Gregory Rudd (American, B. 1952) "F. Scott Fitzgerald" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 23c F. Scott Fitzgerald stamp issued September 27, 1996. Born on September 24, 1896, F. Scott Fitzgerald attended Princeton University, where he penned amateur musical comedies. In 1917, the restless writer left Princeton without a degree. He enlisted in the army, where he wrote a draft of The Romantic Egoist -- the original manuscript of what was to become his first published novel. Revised extensively and renamed This Side of Paradise, Fitzgerald's account of the newly-liberated generation of the Roaring Twenties was the first of its kind. Published in 1920, it garnered Fitzgerald instant fame. However, the gleeful excesses of his new lifestyle soon soured for the author, a sentiment reflected in Fitzgerald's second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922). In 1924, he joined the "lost" society of American expatriates living on the French Riviera that he later described in Tender Is the Night. Shortly after arriving in France, Fitzgerald completed his most celebrated novel: The Great Gatsby. Its haunting portrayal of the American Dream and its ultimate corruption made The Great Gatsby the quintessential American novel of its time and Fitzgerald's most cherished work. In 1940, the author died of a heart attack, leaving his most promising work, The Last Tycoon, unfinished. Fitzgerald was almost as renowned for his turbulent private life as for his timeless literary works. He brought to his short-stories and novels the intense romanticism and decadence that epitomized the lifestyle of his generation in the Roaring Twenties. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Howard Koslow (1924 - 2016) "George Washington" Signed lower left. Original oil painting on Wood Panel. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Proofcard for America's Greatest Military Heroes series, postmarked February 22, 1993. History generally looks upon George Washington as the "Father of our Country" the first president of a newly-formed nation. But it was Washington the Soldier who earned the lofty rank, and Washington the Man who won the love and affection of a grateful nation. A tall, strong man with stern features and broad shoulders, Washington commanded respect and admiration by his very presence. He is said to have been graceful -- even majestic -- in his movements and gestures; a man at once commanding, yet gentle and refined. As a young man he served notably in the British Army, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. At 26, he returned to his Virginia homeland -- having attained renown as a fine British soldier. As a firsthand witness of British military procedures, Washington became an invaluable asset to the Americans, and, with the coming revolution, he was quick to offer his experienced judgment and military knowledge. impressed, members of the Continental Congress wisely elected him Commander-in-Chief of their Army. He accepted no pay for his services but led the Army brilliantly and bravely on to a victory that once seemed almost impossible. In triumph, Washington resigned his commission at Annapolis, Maryland. His military career ended, Washington at 51 looked forward to retirement, but history would hold for him yet another great call to duty -- the Presidency of the United States of America. Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson" Signed lower left. Original oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Proofcard for America's Greatest Military Heroes series, postmarked January 21, 1993. In the heat of a losing battle at Bull Run, Confederate General Barnard E. Bee despaired at the sight of his men falling back. He cried out, "Look, there is Jackson, standing like a stone wall." And so he was, General Thomas Jackson, his troops standing firm despite the raging Union attack. His unwavering stance turned the tide of the battle forcing the Union Army to retreat. From then on, he was known as "Stonewall Jackson," a strict, but skilled leader who pushed his men to the limits of their endurance. But their admiration for him won out and they called him "Old Jack," cheering whenever he appeared. A gallant figure of a man, Jackson led his troops boldly planning their movements with great precision. A master of the surprise attack, he repeatedly defeated attempts by the Union Army to join its forces for a march on Richmond; then he drove his opponents back to the Maryland border. Against odds of nearly two to one, Jackson defeated the Union armies, guessing their strategy and moving his troops quickly. Later, working with General Robert E. Lee, Jackson was able to win substantial victories for the South. But, during the battle of Chancellorsville, Jackson was mistaken for a Union Cavalryman and accidentally shot by his own men. On May 10, 1863, he spoke his last words: "Let us cross over the river and rest in the shade of the trees." Thus, the man who once termed war the "sum of all evils" died a tragic hero in the midst of war. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 18 in. Unframed. (B09301)
Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "Ulysses S. Grant" Signed lower left. Original oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original oil painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative PFCD for America's Greatest Military Heroes series, cancelled April 27, 1992. The year was 1861. The Civil War -- one of America's darkest eras -- had begun. When the cry for Union troops went out, one of the first to answer the call was a middle-aged farmer who had, years earlier, graduated from the famed United States Military Academy. His name was Ulysses S. Grant. On and off the battlefield, Grant exhibited the qualities of a great military leader. He always took the initiative, fought aggressively, and made quick, sure decisions. Within a few months of enlisting, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. Under Grant's staunch leadership and military prowess, the Union Army secured victory after victory. Indeed, Grant's troops won the bloody battles fought at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson and Vicksburg ... to name just a few. He was such a success as a military leader that in early 1864 President Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to lieutenant general and put him in charge of all the Union troops. With this supreme authority bestowed upon him, Grant began a final campaign against the Southern troops of General Robert E. Lee. Grant's troops constantly pursued and attacked the enemy troops, until General Lee was finally forced to surrender on April 9, 1865 ... ending the war. Ulysses S. Grant's bravery and military genius won for him the love and admiration of America ... and eventually the Presidency of the United States. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 18 in. J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Alaska Locomotive" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Alaska Commemorative Cover postmarked August 15, 1995. August 15, 1900, marks the completion of Alaska's first rail route -- the White Pass & Yukon Railway. Construction of the 110-mile circuit between Skagway, Alaska, and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, began on May 27, 1898. The following July, an excursion train ran for four miles out of Skagway, and a year later the line extended to Bennett, British Columbia. In August 1900, at a cost of about $10 million, the entire railway was finally completed. A river division was established in 1901, connecting mining towns to the line by steamship. An aviation division was added in 1937 to fly passengers north of its northernmost stop at Whitehorse. When America entered World War II, the White Pass & Yukon was pressed into service by the U.S. Army. Vital to the construction of the Alcan Highway and to the movement of military cargo, the line saw traffic rise to a level far beyond any seen during the mining booms. Eventually, additional locomotives were brought in from across the country to meet the demands of the increased service. On May 1, 1946, the White Pass & Yukon returned to civilian use. The completion of a highway parallel to the railway, and reduction in output of the Anvil Mine in the Yukon Territory, brought the line to a close on October 8, 1982, although a portion of it has been reactivated for tourist service. Shown here is White Pass & Yukon's No. 1, a 2-6-0 type built by the Brooks Locomotive Works in 1881. Today, this engine is on display in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15152)
Shannon Stirnweis (American, B. 1931) "Philip Mazzei & Ben Franklin" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on a Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Italy 3.20 lire Philip Mazzei stamp issued on October 18, 1980. Like young men in every century, 26-year-old surgeon Philip Mazzei decided in 1752 that the profession for which he had been trained simply did not satisfy him. A merchant at heart, he quit his surgical practice and moved to London, where he organized Martini and Company, importers of cheese, wine and olive oil. Who could have guessed that this change would affect the course of American history? For in London, Mazzei met Benjamin Franklin, who persuaded the young man to move to the American colonies and introduce his southern European products there. Before sailing for Virginia, Mazzei returned to his native Tuscany to ask permission of the duke of that province to export the necessary materials and men. He also delivered two Franklin Stoves which the Duke had ordered from Franklin. Upon arriving in Virginia, Mazzei bought a parcel of land near the present Shadwell Station, about four miles east of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home. He and Jefferson became firm friends. Soon, his agricultural pursuits were overshadowed by his growing commitment to the cause of American freedom. He risked imprisonment for publishing his pro-independence views in both America and Europe. At the first sign of actual fighting, Mazzei enlisted in the "Independent Company" of Albemarle. Virginia Governor Patrick Henry thwarted his later efforts to join the Continental Army, though, persuading him that he could serve his adopted country far better with his pen than he could with his sword. Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Peace Flag" Signed lower middle. Original Oil painting on Canvas board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Peace Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. In the decades following the Civil War, the Peace Flag was created to symbolize America's dedication to world peace. One of the first steps in promoting this lofty goal began in 1899, at The Hague, a scenic city in the Netherlands. The Hague Court held its first international peace conference where representatives met to settle international quarrels and prevent war. The purpose of this conference was to codify international law by providing official procedures in mediation, inquiry and arbitration. In addition, delegates hoped to establish statutes to peacefully solve international disputes and promote disarmament. The United States was represented by Ambassador Andrew D. White, former president of Cornell University; Seth Low, president of Columbia University; Stanford Newell, minister to the Netherlands; Captain William Crozier of the U.S. Army; Captain T. Mahan of the U.S. Navy, and GREW. Holls, a member of the New York bar. Although the conference failed to reach agreement on disarmament, it did establish conventions concerning the pacific settlement of international disputes, the rules of land warfare, and the application to naval war of the principles of the Geneva Convention of 1864. Hugely successful globally, improvements were made throughout its long lifespan. In 1950, the lights were moved from a position behind the grille to protrude through the mesh and in 1952 a larger 2.0-litre petrol engine replaced the original 1.6-litre. The wheelbase was extended to 86 inches in 1955 to give the vehicle more stability and greater load capacity. The stronger, more reliable 2.0-litre petrol engine was standard until 1957. With the US Army’s wartime Willys Jeep as Maurice Wilks’ inspiration for the Land Rover it is perhaps easy to assume that the military application of the Land Rover was a given from day one. However, it was the earlier Nuffield-designed prototype known as 'FV1800', presented in 1945, that pipped the Land Rover to the post. Government regulations and repeated modifications extended development over many years, and the vehicle did not enter production until the early 1950s. By that time, Nuffield had merged with Austin and the resulting vehicle became known as the Austin Champ. The development contract committed the British Armed Forces to a large order of the Champ. In parallel to this order, the British Army purchased a trial batch of Series I Land Rovers in 1949. The earliest Land Rovers were found to complement the Austin Champ very well. The Land Rover was cheaper, lighter, consumed less fuel; and was ideal for behind-the-lines transport duties. However, the Champ was better suited as a front-line combat vehicle. Over time the Land Rover was modified, and became better suited to the British Army's needs. The initial contract order for the Champ was never expanded and production ceased after only five years. The Land Rover, in various forms, was to enjoy a seven-decade long association with the Armed Forces of dozens of countries across the globe. Former British Army Land Rovers have long been identified as either the Series IIA Lightweight, introduced in 1968, or the matte-painted Defenders of later years. Very few military Series I Land Rovers have survived, nor identified as such, and our vendor and Silverstone Auctions are thankful to military vehicle historian John Mastrangelo for the following information. This Land Rover 86 inch was registered to the War Office as "38 BP 45" and entered service on the 22nd October 1954 when dispatched to Feltham Barracks, Middlesex. Officially known as a "Truck 1/4 Ton 4x4 Rover Mk3 (86 Inch)" and supplied under the very first War Office Contract 6/Veh/16223 (Dated 26th May 1954). It was decommissioned on 29th November 1963 and sold as Lot 428 at Ruddington Disposal Depot Auction on the 12th May 1964. The Land Rover was shipped to Jersey and registered there on the on 27th April 1967 later popped on to the Series One Owners Club Register in 1985 by a previous owner.
