Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Normandy on 6th June 1944 and, as such, the only recipient of a VC awarded on D-Day. A good, scarce A.L.S., S Hollis, three pages, small 4to, North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, 11th January 1968, to Mr. Armstrong and his class of school children. Hollis states that he is pleased to write to his correspondents and informs them 'First of all I must tell you that I was not a regular soldier, I was a Territorial in the Green Howards, you may, or may not know, that during war time the “Terriers” constitute a great bulk of the Army. Napoleon once called us a Nation of shop keepers, we have never been known as a country with a huge standing Army, so when a war takes us in, we, the general public, have to Don uniforms and go to fight, after being trained by the Regular Army. This however seems to work satisfactorily, because as you will all know from your history books that generally we have won. Off (sic) course we have had our reverses & defeats, but we generally have won the last battle which as you will agree is the most important one'. Hollis further writes 'Of course war is not the only thing we have an Army for. We (“Great Britain”) have committments (sic) all over the world, and we have to keep an eye (like Policemen) on things. It is also a worthwhile career for any young lady or man, as we are tought (sic) trades, so that when you are discharged you can go straigt (sic) into industry'. A letter of interesting content. A couple of small tape stains to the upper and lower edges of some of the pages, caused by previous mounting, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG

Lewis Publishers Ltd. Browning informs his correspondent, in part, 'Please go ahead as you suggested. Although I have not yet been able to ask the members of the Household how many they want. I think we had better say straight away 500…' (23rd September 1948), 'Thank you very much for your letter of the 9th November, and for the 500 Christmas Cards… I showed one to Her Royal Highness who commented very favourably on it. I am most grateful to you for making these available at the price which all members of the Household and staff can afford… These cards in the open market are somewhat prohibitive these days' (11th November 1948), '…Although both coloured reproductions you enclosed are very nice, I do feel that they are hardly suitable for Christmas time… Here we have in one picture Katherine of Aragon pleading for her life, and the other, another Queen of England already deceased! We are now thinking, subject to Their Royal Highnesses' approval, of having a coloured photograph of them with Prince Charles as our more expensive Christmas Card and a cheaper card with a photograph by Country Life of the Clarence House offices' (10th October 1949). With various instructions at the base noting that the message is a priority and most immediate and is not to be signalled. A couple of pencil annotations appear at the head and the foot of the page. Two file holes to the left edge and with some light overall creasing, about VGAn historically important Top Secret Cipher Message issued at the end of World War II announcing the arrest of Dönitz and the end of the Flensberg Government.Karl Dönitz (1891-1980) German Admiral who played a major role in the naval history of World War II. Dönitz succeeded Adolf Hitler as the Reichspräsident of the 'Flensberg Government' (2nd May - 23rd May 1945).OKW - the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht ('Supreme Command of the Armed Forces') was part of the command structure of the Wehrmacht (armed forces) of Germany during World War II. Created in 1938, the OKW had nominal oversight over the German Army, the Kriegsmarine (German navy) and the Luftwaffe (German air force).SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) - the headquarters of American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Commander of Allied forces in north west Europe, from late 1943 until the end of World War II. Eisenhower ordered General Rooks, G-3 of SHAEF, to establish the SHAEF Control Party at Flensburg. Its purpose was to impose the will of the Supreme Commander on OKW in the areas of Germany occupied by the Western Allies. General Rooks issued the orders, supervised their transmission through German command channels, and compiled information about the German command system through the collection and safeguarding of all OKW documents at FIensburg.Camp ASHCAN - the Central Continental Prisoner of War Enclosure No. 32, code-named Ashcan, an Allied prisoner-of-war camp in the Palace Hotel of Mondorf-les-Bains in Luxembourg during World War II. Operating from May to August 1945, it served as a processing station and interrogation centre for the 86 most prominent surviving Nazi leaders prior to their trial in Nuremberg, including Hermann Göring and Karl Dönitz. On the morning of 23 May 1945, General Rooks summoned Dönitz, Jodl, and von Friedeburg to the liner Patria. Here they were greeted by a large crowd of press reporters, alerted by speculation of a Control Party action and SHAEF correspondents leaving from Paris. On entering the ships' conference room, they found General Rooks who informed them that they had been summoned on instructions from General Eisenhower, who in agreement with the Soviet High Command, had decided the Acting German Government and OKW should be arrested. This officially ended the 'Flensburg Government'. Now as prisoners of war, and under guard, they were told to pack and were escorted to an awaiting aircraft. When asked by Rooks if he had any statement to make, Dönitz replied 'Any word would be superfluous'. Meanwhile, members of the government, unaware of the proceedings on the Patria, had gathered for their daily conference. Fully armed British soldiers burst into the room shouting 'Hands Up'. All the Germans were then strip searched for concealed weapons and documents. The arrests were intended to make the headlines, with over sixty reporters invited to record the scenes. In the New York Times of the 24th May, Drew Middleton wrote 'The Third Reich died today'. The American Diplomat Robert Murphy summed it up as thus, 'After the arrest of Grand Admiral Dönitz and his associates, not even a remnant remained of any German government. The conquerors of the Nazis were in complete control and the administration of Germany was their responsibility.' That struggle was about to begin.

KAI-SHEK CHIANG: (1887-1975) Chinese President 1948-49, 1950-75.  Signed postcard photograph, the official portrait depicting Chiang in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by Hu Chung Hsien. Signed, in Chinese characters, with his name alone in black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image. One very slight, extremely minor corner crease, VG Chiang Kai-Shek served as leader of the Republic of China from 1928-75 and was a close ally of Sun Yat-sen, taking his place as leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) following the Canton Coup of 1926. A socially conservative leader, promoting traditional Chinese culture in the New Life Movement and rejecting western democracy as well as Sun's nationalist democratic socialism in favour of an authoritarian government, Chiang Kai-Shek was however unable to maintain cordial relations with the Communists and purged them in a massacre at Shanghai. At the onset of the Second Sino-Japanese War (later becoming the Chinese theatre of World War II) Chiang was kidnapped and obliged to establish a Second Unit Front with the Communists. In 1946, after the defeat of the Japanese, an attempt to form a coalition government failed and the Chinese Civil War resumed with the CCP defeating the Nationalists and declaring the People's Republic of China in 1949. Chiang's government and army retreated to Taiwan, where Chiang imposed martial law in a period of his rule known as the 'White Terror'. Chiang's government continued to declare its intention to retake mainland China and Chiang ruled Taiwan securely as President of the Republic of China until his death in 1975.
