Nameplate and badge SAPPER. Ex Ministry of Defence Austerity 0-6-0ST built by the Hunslet Engine Company in 1953 as works number 3797. Delivered new to the MOD at Bicester and numbered WD 197, it then worked at various Army locations including Longmoor in 1957, before going back to the Command Ordnance Depot at Bicester where it was named Sapper in May 1965. In 1977 it went to the Kent & East Sussex Railway where during its first two years it remained Army property and was sold to K&ESR members in October 1979. The nameplates were not available so it was renamed Northiam. Rectangular cast brass with integral badge and metal mounting plate, measures 25in x 16in. In good condition.

McLaren Ross had doubts about the project but delivered a screenplay to Snowden in January 1957. Puzzle for Fiends, working title for The Strange Awakening (1958) Anglo-Guild Productions, London, 1957, 92pp. typescript with coloured revision sheets, a 4pp. unit list, annotated in pencil to verso of the last page, an 8pp. location/shooting schedule, a black and white photograph of Hatchford Park, near Cobham, Surrey, 10 x 8 inches, 4 related magazine cuttings and a 9pp. production budget at end, also bound in are Two Autograph Letters. Signed by scriptwriter, Julian McLaren Ross, written to Alec C. Snowden, both letters very closely written in neat, blue ink manuscript, with McLaren Ross 39 Kensington Gardens Square, London address top right, the first letter, 1pp., 28 lines, a single leaf dated 13.6. 57, McLaren Ross updates the producer of various changes he has made to the revised script and advises him that any redundant dialogue the producer finds, he should leave these out, he adds Guy Madison by the way is making a new western, so we may not get him after all, (possibly the western film, Bullwhip (1958) directed by Harmon Jones); the second letter, 1pp., 36 lines, a single leaf dated 13.8.57, the agitated scriptwriter vents his frustrations over the additional workload, time and expenses he has incurred whilst working on the revised script. To which is prefixed, A short general history of the country, from the rise of that monarchy: and an account of the author's life, 2 vol., first edition, list of subscribers, 3 engraved portraits (2 as frontispieces), folding engraved map, final advertisement f., vol.1 2E4 short tear at foot, touching 3 letters, but without loss, occasional spotting or light staining, contemporary calf, gilt spines in compartments and with red and black morocco labels (the reds new but sympathetic), a few stains, rubbed and marked, a solid set, 8vo, Aberdeen, Printed by and for F. Douglass and W. Murray, 1755.⁂ Around 1692 Gordon travelled to Russia. He was introduced to the Czar, who was sufficiently impressed to make him a major in the Russian army. Within a few months he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel, rising later to major-general. He fought for the Jacobites in the 1715 rising.
