Weltkrieg - Seltener und gut erhaltener Vintage- Abzug aus der Zeit um 1930 Provenienz:- Privatsammlung Nordrhein-WestfalenDer Amerikaner Man Ray ist wohl einer der bedeutendsten Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Vermutlich im Rahmen seiner ersten Einzelausstellung lernt Man Ray Marcel Duchamp kennen. Nachhaltig beeindruckt von der Begegnung freunden sich die beiden an und wenige Jahre später folgt er Duchamp nach Paris. Der erhoffte Durchbruch als Maler bleibt jedoch aus und so beginnt Man Ray ab 1922 mit der Portraitfotografie. Er portraitiert in dieser Zeit zahlreiche Größen wie Braque, Picasso und Matisse. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt die Amerikanerin Lee Miller, die Man Ray im Rahmen der Modefotografie zunächst als Model kennenlernt. Sie wird seine Schülerin und geht eine Liebesbeziehung mit ihm ein. Die Beziehung hält aber nur kurz. Die anfängliche Faszination Man Rays von der selbstbewussten, unabhängigen und intelligenten Amerikanerin schlägt schnell um in eine destruktive Obsession, die in Form von zunehmend sexualisierten Sujets auch beginnt, sich in Man Rays Oeuvre niederzuschlagen. 1932 trennt sich das Paar und Miller geht zurück in die Vereinigten Staaten. Gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs beginnt sie für die US-Army als Militärkorrespondentin zu arbeiten und wird als Kriegsfotografin unter anderem durch die Dokumentation der Befreiung der Konzentrationslager Buchenwald und Dachau weltberühmt. Aufsehen erregte auch ein gestelltes Foto ihres Kollegen und kurzzeitigen Lebensgefährten David E. Scherman, welches Lee Miller in der Badewanne von Hitlers Privatwohnung in München zeigt. Researched gas attacks, 1954;  Fred Baltime, with a sketch of woman on reverse;  Mrs Andrew Carnegie, former rector at St Andrews University, wife of philanthropist and industrialist Andrew Carnegie, two, 1933;  Col. Sealy Clark, Salvation Army Colonel, 1946;  Dr. Frank Nathan Daniel Buchman, Founder of the controversial religious movement that became Moral Re-armament. Switzerland, 1938;  Mr Alkin;  Mrs Victor Bond, two;  Miss Beryl Badson;  chalk and pastel on paper, 66 x 47.5 cm and smaller (unframed) (10) (ARR) Provenance:  The Walpole Society, donated by Philip Mould & Company on behalf of a private collector  Note:  Frank O. Salisbury was one of the leading society portrait painters of his day. The son of a plumber and glazier, he was drawn to art at an early age and throughout his career painted many important figures in the cultural and political sphere, including Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill. His portraits of Dame Maud McCarthy and Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (King Edward VIII) are currently on display as part of the inaugural display at the newly reopened National Portrait Gallery in London. Salisbury also painted large-scale ceremonial, historical and religious scenes, many of which are now in public collections.  Salisbury painted in a classical but lively style, bringing his sitters to life while remaining vehemently opposed to modern methods. The works for sale with Roseberys include portraits of glamourous society figures, politicians, eminent businesspeople, and members of the aristocracy. Interesting examples include portraits of Will Keith Kellogg, founder of the eponymous cereal company, Her Highness the Ameera of Bhahwalpur and Mrs Dunlap Hopkins, President of the Women’s School of Design in New York. There is also a highly moving study of a Nurse in Wartime uniform. Alongside these portraits, there is also a collection of large-scale studies for religious scenes.  These works have remained unseen for several decades and were recently donated to The Walpole Society by Philip Mould & Company on behalf of a private collector.

Through The Ranks To A Commission (by J E Ackland Troyte) Published by MacMillan and Co. 1881 Second Edition. This book was originally published anonymously in 1881 with a note from the publishers saying that they could guarantee the genuineness of the narrative. Now known to have been written by John Edward Acland Troyte (1848 1932) and tells of his experiences in the Army where he earned the rank of Captain serving in Gibraltar and Ireland. This book measures approx 13cm x 18.5cm , 180 pages, red hardback with black lettering. There is a book ownership plate for Francis H D C Whitmore pasted into the front of the book (see photographs). Colonel Sir Francis Henry Douglas Charlton Whitmore (1872 1962), 1st Baronet KCB CMG DSO TD JP was a British military officer (C, O 10th Royal Hussars) and land owner residing at Gumley Hall in Leicestershire. The book also has an owner's name written in black ink (see photographs). This is possibly Sir John Henry Douglas Whitmore (1937 2017) 2nd Baronet a pioneer of the executive coach industry, an author and a British racing car driver. The book shows some very minor signs of age, otherwise is in very good condition (see photographs)Good condition. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. The 5307th Composite Unit was a United States Army long range penetration special operations jungle warfare unit who fought against the Japanese in the South East Asia theatre of war during WW2.
