Dads Army Frank Williams signed 10 x 8 inch colour photo. English actor, best known for playing Reverend Timothy Farthing in the BBC television sitcom Dad's Army (1969-1977). Often cast as a member of the clergy, Williams appeared in similar roles in sitcoms including The Worker, Vanity Fair, Hi-de-Hi and You Rang, M'lord? and film What's Up Nurse!. Great War and WW2 Field Marshall Lord Harding of Petherton DSO MC signed 13 sqn RAF flown cover. Field Marshal Allan Francis Harding, 1st Baron Harding of Petherton, GCB, CBE, DSO and Two Bars, MC (10 February 1896 - 20 January 1989), known as John Harding, was a senior British Army officer who fought in both the First World War and the Second World War, served in the Malayan Emergency, and later advised the British government on the response to the Mau Mau Uprising. He also served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS), the professional head of the British Army, and was Governor of Cyprus from 1955 to 1957 during the Cyprus Emergency. Good condition. WW2 Gen Sir Kenneth Darling DSO signed Advance to the Elbe 50th ann cover JS50/45/8. He served with the 2nd Battalion of his regiment, in the United Kingdom, before serving with the 1st Battalion in India for eight years, from 1930 to 1938. He was promoted to lieutenant on 29 August 1932, and captain on 1 August 1938. Soon after the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 Darling returned to the United Kingdom where, from January?April 1940 he attended the Staff College, Camberley as a student, and after graduating he was made a brigade major with the 1st London Brigade, part of the 1st London Division. Serving briefly as a General Staff Officer Grade 2 (GSO2) at the War Office, he was an instructor at the Senior Officers' School, Wiltshire, from January?October 1941, before returning to the War Office for eight months as GSO1 Military Training. From June 1942 he was Commanding Officer (CO) of the 11th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He commanded the battalion, a second line Territorial Army which formed part of the 140th Brigade, itself part of the 47th (London) Infantry Division. He served in North West Europe during 1944 and 1945 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 7 June 1945 while serving with the 12th (Yorkshire) Parachute Battalion, initially as its second-in-command and then as its commanding officer. He became Commander of the 5th Parachute Brigade in 1946, then serving in Palestine during the Palestine Emergency, of the Airborne Forces Depot in 1948 and of the 16th Independent Parachute Brigade in 1950. Great War ace Fred West VC signed DH9 bomber cover. He was 22 years old, and a captain in No. 8 Squadron, Royal Air Force during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 12 August 1918, the British Army was intending to start a major offensive, but it needed information about the enemy positions. Setting off at dawn, West and his observer, Lt. William Haslam, flying an Armstrong Whitworth FK 8 (serial number C8602), spotted an enemy concentration through a hole in the mist. Avoiding severe ground fire, almost immediately they came under attack from seven German fighter aircraft and West was hit in the leg, and his radio transmitter was smashed. Continuing to identify his location, he remained under attack and manoeuvred his machine so skilfully that his observer was able to get several good bursts into the enemy machines, which drove them away. Only when he was sure of the enemy's position did he attempt to break off and head for his own lines. He twisted his trouser leg into a tourniquet to stem the flow of blood from his wounds. Unable to make his airfield West landed behind the Allied lines and insisted on reporting his findings despite being in excruciating agony. His left leg had five wounds, one of which had shattered his femur and cut the femoral artery and had to be amputated. Good condition. A Volkswagen presentation box presented to Captain R W C Commonwooden construction applied with presentation plaque, engraved with details and dated Mars 1949, mounted with a miniature carved wooden 'Beetle' painted gold with black lettering and details, the box 36cm wide overall. Footnotes:Captain R.W.C Common was a 2nd lieutenant of the Royal Army Service Corps in 1944 and by 1948 was made a senior lieutenant. In 1949 Common was then made the Honorary rank of Captain for his completion of service. Common was known as part of the team that worked with the GCLO (German Civil Labour Organisation) in Bad Oeynhausen (where the Volkswagen factory was based at that time), in his position similar to that of a senior foreman.
