David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "The Indian Scout" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "The Bozeman Trail" published in 1983. America's pioneers viewed the rolling country of what is now Wyoming and Montana as a vast wasteland ... something to be crossed as quickly as possible on the way to the comfort and riches of the Far West. However, to the Crow Indians these vast prairies were sacred and beautiful. The mightly buffalo grazed the tall bending grasses. Indeed, a treaty signed by the Indians and the U.S. Government at Fort Laramie in 1851 guaranteed Indian rights in these fertile plains. But after gold was discovered in southwestern Montana in 1862, a white man proposed to run wagon trains through this land ... from the Oregon Trail to the northern mountains. The consequences, as the wiser Indians well knew, would be disastrous. For everywhere else on the plains, the coming of the white man had meant the disappearance of the buffalo. The threat to these last herds was intolerable. So, when John Bozeman ... a miner turned trail guide ... blazed a suitable wagon trail to the gold country, Indians successfully turned back the first wagon train. However, on July 1, 1864, Bozeman organized another party and completed the first trip, which only intensified the Indians' anger. As a result, by 1866 three Army forts guarded the trail as it coursed through dangerous Indian country. Size: 18 x 20.75 in. Unframed. (B06239)

Jack Fellows (B. 1941) "Northrop P-61B Black Widow" Signed lower right. Original oil on Masonite painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 33c P-61B Black Widow stamp issued February 10, 2000. At the onset of World War II, American air units were poorly equipped for night fighting. Using radar technology borrowed from the British and developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Northrop Company built a fighter that could function in total darkness -- the P-61B Black Widow. By mid-1944, the Black Widow had become the Army Air Force's standard night fighter. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 16 in. Unframed. (B14294)

Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Brandywine Flag" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Brandywine Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. In 1777, the British set out to capture Philadelphia. Washington believed that his best defense against the advancing British army, led by General Sir William Howe, was at Brandywine Creek, located about 25 miles southwest of the city. The American general deployed his troops at vital crossings along the creek, choosing high ground in the area of Chadd's Ford as a primary defensive position. On September 11, 1777, Howe pretended to launch an attack at Chadd's Ford, but the majority of his army crossed the Brandywine at a point farther north than Washington expected, surprising the Americans with an attack on their right flank. Howe's strategy was effective and Washington ordered his army to take the high ground around Birmingham Friends Meeting House as a last defense. Although the Americans were forced to retreat, the Continental Army remained intact. The Brandywine flag, reportedly flown during this historic battle, features a red field with a smaller flag design making up the canton. The flag-within-a-flag bears 13 red and white stripes, while the canton is a white field with a cluster of 13 red stars. This unique banner was one of the first American flags featuring a stars-and-stripes design. Image Size: 13 x 18 in. Overall Size: 15 x 19.5 in. Unframed. (B16769)

Ed Vebell (American, 1921 - 2018) "Battle of Monitor and Merrimac" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. Just as General Lee aimed at capturing Washington in order to gain recognition for the Confederacy from abroad, so Lincoln aimed at Richmond, heart and soul of the Confederacy, to make clear that the southerner's cause was lost. The grand strategy of the campaign was to bypass Lee's Army of Northern Virginia by launching an invasion from the York Peninsula, where the Union Army could be supplied and reinforced by sea, and fight its way to Richmond from the South. This strategy was threatened by the presence of the frigate, Merrimack, which the Confederates had salvaged from the deep, converted into an ironclad, and renamed the Virginia. Soon the Virginia destroyed three Union warships. Alarmed by this, the Navy Department commissioned the most gifted naval engineer in American -- John Ericsson -- to build an armored vessel which could meet the Confederacy's ironclad on equal terms. This he did, almost miraculously, in one hundred working days. On March 9, 1862, the two ships met in Hampton Roads in what was the first all-ironclad battle of naval history. The two ships were well matched, but the Monitor had the advantage of one of Ericsson's innovations, a revolving turret, and of lying so low in the water that it was difficult to hit. In the end, the Virginia withdrew. She continued to protect the James River for the Confederates however, until they themselves destroyed her lest she be captured by the Union forces after they took Norfolk in May. Image Size: 19.75 x 21 in. Overall Size: 25.75 x 26.5 in. Unframed. (B05307)

Ed Vebell (American, 1921 - 2018) "Wright Brothers Fly Kitty Hawk" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. December 17, 1903, was a bleak and chilly morning in North Carolina. On the windswept sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, a small group of curious onlookers had gathered to watch two intrepid brothers -- Wilbur and Orville Wright -- attempt to fly a 745-pound wheelless biplane they'd built in their Dayton, Ohio, bicycle shop. In the middle of the 40-foot-long lower wing lay Orville Wright, face down in a hip cradle. As the 12-horsepower motor roared and the aircraft moved forward, Wilbur Wright ran alongside holding the tip of the right wing to keep the plane steady. Approaching the end of the runway, the Flyer suddenly rose into the air and climbed to about 10 feet above the sand. For 12 memorable seconds it actually flew, covering a distance of 120 feet before nosing down and skidding to a rude landing. Orville later described the event as the "first in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward on a level course without reduction of speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started." The Wright Brothers spent five years marketing their plane before signing contracts with both the U.S. Army and a French commercial concern. The airplane was poised to make a monumental mark on the 20th century. Image Size: 19 x 20.5 in. Overall Size: 26 x 26.25 in. Unframed. (B05366)

Li Qingfa (Chinese, B. 1954) and Jiang Weijie (Chinese, 20th C.) "Terra Cotta Warriors - Heavy Armor" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Silk. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. S3 The Terracotta Warriors stamp issued November 19, 1997. In 1974, at the foot of China's Mount Lishan near Xian, a peasant farmer unearthed a few ancient artifacts while digging a well. At the time, no one suspected that this seemingly insignificant discovery would lead to one of the most incredible archeological finds in history -- the 2,200-year-old mausoleum of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Twenty-three years later, this remarkable story is still unfolding, as each day archeologists carefully uncover more of this astonishing underground empire. To date, more than 8,000 extraordinary clay statues have been unearthed -- an army of Qin Shi Huang's terra-cotta warriors. Life-size horses, infantrymen, charioteers and archers -- armed with real bronze swords, spears and crossbows -- have been discovered in three pits covering some five acres. Excavation is proceeding in carefully planned phases. It is a painstakingly slow process, with completion of just pit 2 expected to take another seven or eight years. To protect this precious site from the elements and air pollution, and to allow visitors to observe an immense excavation in progress, China built the Xi-An Terra-Cotta Museum. Since its opening in October 1994, the museum has attracted two million people a year from around the world. In recognition of its importance to the cultural legacy of the world, Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum was named a United Nations World Heritage Site in 1987. Image Size: 12 x 9.25 in. Overall Size: 14 x 12 in. Unframed. (B15788)

Gherman Alexeyvich Komlev (Russian, 1933 - 2000) "Troops Guarding Wagon Train" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas laid on Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 8c Troops Guarding Wagon Train stamp issued June 18, 1998. Immigrants moving west constantly passed through hostile Indian lands. Because of the constant threat of attack, the United States Army was often asked to provide protection for settlers and their families. At a meeting with the Army, Hunkpapa Sioux Chief Bear Rib expressed his concerns over the emigration of settlers to traditional hunting grounds. "To whom does this land belong? I believe it belongs to me. If you ask me for a piece of land I will not give it. I cannot spare it, and I like it very much. All this country on each side of this river belongs to me, ... and if you, my brother, should ask me for it, I would not give it to you, for I like it and I hope you will listen to me." His words fell on deaf ears as settlers continued journeying to the West in increasing numbers. By the end of the 19th century, the U.S. Army had fought 24 "Indian Wars" and had participated in over 1,000 skirmishes. Even though the estimated 200,000 Indians of the Far West greatly outnumbered the 20,000 troops stationed at over 100 forts, the Indians stood no chance against the cavalry's superior firepower, supplies and tactics. One tribe after another succumbed and surrendered to be placed on reservations. Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce echoed their sentiments, "Hear me, my chiefs, I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." In 1883, General William T. Sherman concluded, "I now regard the Indians as substantially eliminated from the problem of the Army." Image Size: 10 x 20.5 in. Overall Size: 12.75 x 22.75 in. Unframed. (B16011)

Arthur Singer (New York, 1917 - 1990) "Blue Hen and Peach Blossom" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 20c Delaware: Blue Hen Chicken and Peach Blossom stamp issued on April 14, 1982. Blue Hen Chicken - Delaware furnished one regiment during the American Revolution, and certainly no regiment in the Army surpassed it in soldiership or had a longer service record. Their American comrades dubbed the Delaware men "the Blue Hen's Chickens," because, it was said, they fought with the tenacity of the blue-tinted game cocks they carried with them. These chickens were thought to be of the brood of a famous Blue Hen. When not fighting the enemy, the officers and men amused themselves by pitting these Blue Hen Chickens against each other. The fame of these cockfights spread throughout the Army, and remains a part of the Blue Hen Chicken's reputation to this day. Peach Blossom - The peach is one of those fruits which has been cultivated for so long, and over so wide an area, that its place of origin is obscured. However, it is generally believed to be a native of China, and to have been cultivated there thousands of years before it was brought to America. The flowering peaches are some of the loveliest of all trees. The rich deep pink Peach Blossoms are borne on the previous season's new branches only, and because they bloom very early in the year there is always danger of damage by late frosts. Peach trees seldom live longer than thirty years, and though they may bear some fruit when they are old, it is not profitable for orchards to keep trees more than nine years. Image Size: 13.75 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 17.5 in. Unframed. (B05107)

Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Pierre L'Enfant Flag" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Pierre L'Enfant Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. French-born American architect and engineer Pierre-Charles L'Enfant was born on August 2, 1754, in Paris. He studied art under his father at the Royal Academy in Paris and later received training in engineering. In 1776, he enlisted as a volunteer in the American Revolutionary Army. In 1783, Congress appointed L'Enfant major of engineers. After the war, L'Enfant designed the medal and diploma of the Society of the Cincinnati, an association of former Revolutionary officers. When he returned to Paris, he was instrumental in organizing the French branch of the society. In 1784, L'Enfant again came to America, settling in New York City, where he was commissioned to redesign the old city hall (Federal Hall) for the U.S. Congress. When Congress decided to build a federal city on the Potomac river, President Washington commissioned L'Enfant to draw up the plans. The Pierre L'Enfant flag was sketched on a proposed membership diploma for the Society of the Cincinnati. This 1783 flag is a variation of the stars-and-stripes design that was popular at the time. The Pierre L'Enfant flag features 13 alternating red and white stripes, with 13 stars arranged in a circle on a blue field in the canton. Image Size: 13.5 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 15 in. Unframed. (B16821)

Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Desert Storm Triumph Parade" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commerative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary June 8, 2002. On August 2, 1990, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein -- the Iraqi tyrant greedy for domination of the Middle East -- launched a brutal assault on the tiny, defenseless country of Kuwait. In response to Hussein's naked aggression, U.S. President George Bush initiated Operation Desert Shield -- a unilateral mobilization of both active and reserve military forces to Saudi Arabia. On January 16, the day after a United Nations deadline directing Hussein to withdraw from Kuwait, word came. Operation Desert Storm -- the liberation of Kuwait -- had begun. For the next forty-three days, more than half a million American sons and daughters from all five branches of service -- the Air Force, Navy, Army, Marines and Coast Guard -- battled an implacable enemy. Vastly outnumbered, they fought valiantly and achieved one stunning victory after another. On February 28, Saddam Hussein -- his heinous war machine decimated and his army in rout -- capitulated. This artwork is dedicated to the Heroes of Desert Storm, the brave men and women who did the hard work of freedom in January and February 1991 and is a magnificent tribute to our Armed Forces, who answered the call to arms and braved a merciless despot to sever the shackles of oppression in Kuwait. Image Size: 15 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 16 in. Unframed. (B16965)

Ivor Roberts-Jones (British, 1916-1996)Sir Winston Churchill, maquette for the monument in Parliament Square numbered '26' (on the bronze base)bronze with a brown patina on a stone base50.8 cm. (20 in.) high (excluding the base)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, from whom purchased by the present owners Grandfather, Dr. Eugene Gancz, circa 1971Private Collection, U.K. Dr Gancz was born in Hungary in 1912 but, being Jewish, was forced to flee in the 1930s to Austria to study for his degree in Medicine and then again to Basel, Switzerland after Austria's Anschluss with Germany. After completing his studies to become a doctor in February 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Dr Gancz applied for citizenship in the United Kingdom where he volunteered to serve in the army as a doctor. During the war, Dr Gancz worked as a doctor in the U.K. and served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Italy, achieving the rank of Major. After the war he was a General Practitioner in Kent and, for 41 years, a Police Surgeon, for which long service he was made an Honorary Consultant Medical Advisor to the Chief Constable of Kent. Feeling an enormous sense of gratitude to Churchill and the United Kingdom, Dr Gancz purchased the bronze figure of Winston Churchill, the man he respected so much and whom he held responsible for saving him and the few of his family who survived the Holocaust. The present work is a maquette for the large scale sculpture of Churchill by Roberts-Jones which stands in Parliament Square and was commissioned in 1971. The first important commission the artist had received came in 1961 from Lord Beaverbrook for a bust of Somerset Maugham. Following this, he was asked to sculpt the memorial statue for fellow artist Augustus John in Hampshire. This major work took three years to complete but was a great success and crucially led to his election as Associate of The Royal Academy. Further honours followed in 1975 when Ivor was awarded the C.B.E. Another cast of the present work was sold in these rooms for £112,500, 14 November 2018.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
