John Canty was Adjutant when Col 'Buck' Buchanan arrived to take command. It was Col Buck who later said "After very heavy casualties, the Bn was reinforced by 200 officers and men of the Cameronians. That the Bn was in good heart was much due to the Adjutant John Canty who was a very pleasant hardened warrior who made me welcome. I was not a Fusilier but with John's help became one". It soon became evident that John Canty deserved promotion and whilst preparing for the Cassino battle he was promoted Maj and took command of 'C' Coy. In this he was a great success. 'C' Coy, led by John, fought a very successful battle at Pogarello and there he gained a very well deserved MC. He was in good form but showing signs of strain when he left the Bn for a staff appointment in Greece. Before and after the war, John was a member of his father's firm on the Baltic exchange and a Freeman of the City of London. Although involved in business and living out of London, he was great supporter of the Regt and attended numerous reunions whenever he could. He took great interest in the 3rd Bn during the Gulf War and was in touch with the wounded to whom he sent a personal contribution and messages of good cheer. John Canty was a great gentleman and a splendid Fusilier. He will be greatly missed by his many friends in the Regt and elsewhere."
