Army of India Medal, 1851, named to Lieut. A. H. Ormsby. 1st Foot, with Ava clasp. Confirmed on the roll Lieut. Augustus Ormsby served with the 2nd battalion 1st regiment of Foot, one of 118 Ava clasps to the regiment. Please note that this medal appears to have been brooched or mounted in some way and re-suspendered at some time in its history, with corresponding marks and naming obscured at some points, see photographs. It seems likely that these and the next lot (medals of Lieut W.C. Ormsby) were from the same family and would have been treated in the same way.
Two Victorian military medals, named to Lieut. W. C. Ormsby. 63rd Regt. N.I., comprising Army of India Medal, 1851, with two clasps, Ava and Bhurtpoor and Sutlej Medal, 1846, with Sobraon clasp. One of only 13 men to receive the Ava and Bhurtpoor clasp combination (2) William Carelton Ormsby was a cadet in the Bengal Establishment in 1821 and was commissioned as ensign in the 32nd Native Infantry in 1822. He transferred to the 63rd Native Infantry (Mynpoori Levy) in 1824 and was appointed Lieutenant in January 1825. He took part in the first Burma War in Arakan in 1825 and at the siege of Bharatpur in 1825/26. He was made captain on 20th January 1835 and took part in the First Sikh War at Ferozhahr and Sobraon in 1846 where he was wounded. In 1853 he returns home, now a Brevet Major, on a medical certificate but on 15th November of that year is appointed Major with the newly raised 3rd Bengal European Regiment. He's appointed Brevet Lt. Col on 20th June 1854 and retires in September 1855. He died in Plymouth aged 70 in 1875. Note: Robert Puddester's "Medals of British India" lists Ormsby and notes that only 13 medals were issued with the Ava/Bhurtpoor combination, with W.C Ormbsy being one of just 11 Honourable East India Company officers to receive it. Both of these medals appear to have been mounted or brooched then re-suspendered at some time in their history with corresponding marks and naming obscured/re-engraved in some areas, please see photographs. It seems likely that these and the previous lot (Lieut. A.H. Ormsby) were from the same family and so it is perfectly understandable that they would have been treated in the same way. Whether this was as jewellery, menu holders or for another reason we cannot say.
Punjab Medal, 1849, named to Capt. R. N. Tronson. 2nd. Eur. Regt., with two clasps, Chilianwalla and Goojerat. The very first officer to take command of the newly formed Shanghai Volunteer Corps. Robert Nixon Tronson was born in 1820 in Newry, Ireland. In 1881 he was living at 27 Avenue Elmers, Kingston on Thames, Surrey, married to Maria Jane Durrell (nee Cooke) with eight children, (three daughters and five sons) and three servants. His occupation is listed as Colonel in the Indian Army. In Burke's peerage he is noted as being a Major General in the Bengal Staff Corps. In 1839 Tronson was serving as an ensign with the 56th regiment of Native Infantry at Dinapore; he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Bengal (European) Light Infantry (later 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers) on 29th January 1840 and 1st Lieutenant on 15th August 1842 attaining his captaincy on 15th November 1849. He served with them in the second Sikh War in the Punjab. The National Archives of India show him being put at the disposal of the Foreign Department for employment in the Punjab in 1851 and he is appointed both a Pension Pay Master for the regiment in Lahore and a captain in the Punjab police. In 1853 his career takes an unusual turn when Captain Tronson took command of the newly formed Shanghai Volunteer Corps, a small unit formed during the Taiping rebellion that was to see action in the Battle of Muddy Flat in April 1854 against Imperial Chinese troops*. It is believed that this battle was the first time the Americans and British had fought side by side as allies on land. Tronson is appointed to the Bengal Staff Corps and promoted to Major in 1861. He passed away on November 9th 1882 in London. * Notes on the Shanghai Volunteer Corps. Major A McKenzie Annand TD. Journal for the Society for Army Historical Research vol 53 no 214 Summer 1975 page 98.
