Etat II+. Exceptional Waffen-SS Paratrooper Smock. Made of camouflage pea-dot fabric. All buttons are present and in their original color. The collar pockets are intact, with the flaps having been resewn, likely a period repair. The hip pockets also have their flaps resewn, probably a period modification. All press studs are functional. The sleeve lining is made of gray satinette. The elastic bands are stretched out. The back pocket for a flare pistol is complete. The colors are partially faded from sun exposure. The pocket linings are made of Feldgrau fabric. One lining is heavily damaged with some missing parts. The interior is lined with Feldgrau cotton fabric. The drawstrings are present. No visible markings. This piece was recovered in Bastogne after the fighting. It was on display for many years in the Bastogne War Museum and was reproduced in Werner Palinckx s work on camouflage gear. Photos of this smock in the museum’s display cases are available. A copy of Werner Palinckx s book is included. This exceptional uniform piece comes from the famous 600th Battalion of the Waffen-SS, which replaced the original 500th Battalion, the only airborne unit within this branch. Created specifically for anti-partisan operations, elements of the 600th Battalion participated in the infamous Greif Operation led by Otto Skorzeny during the Battle of the Bulge. This operation, which aimed to capture bridges over the Meuse intact, also sought to sow confusion in the ranks of the American Army by dressing some of the unit’s members as US soldiers to provide false intelligence and misinformation. Though it ultimately failed, it caused significant confusion among the Allies. Some members of the 600th Battalion took part in this operation. Only 1,000 men formed this battalion, making its uniform pieces of extreme rarity. This historical piece is of the utmost importance, illustrated in a reference book, and was displayed for many years in the official Bastogne Museum. Given its battlefield provenance, it can be assumed that this smock was worn by members of the unit who participated in the Greif Operation, one of the most well-known German commando operations of World War II, orchestrated by one of its most iconic officers, Otto Skorzeny. The Greif Operation is undoubtedly one of the most significant moments of the Battle of the Bulge. Note some wear and patina on the item, along with a few stains and snags. Condition, II+.

The massif was defended by the 5th US Corps and the 1st US Army, with the front line in this sector held by the 2nd US Infantry Division and the 99th US Infantry Division, supported by elements from the 801st and 820th US Tank Destroyer Battalions. The original letter confirming the donation of these items is included with the lot, as well as other correspondence from General Fraser to Cavanagh. William C. Cavanagh is an Anglo-Belgian historian, a recognized expert on the Battle of the Bulge, whose publications are authoritative in the field. This is an important historical artifact directly from the veteran, with his story attached, placing the item within that context. Colonel Fraser, commanding the 51st Engineer Combat Battalion, along with Captain Sam Schuber and Major Robert Yates, blew up the first bridge in the town of Trois Ponts in front of the first tanks of Peiper’s column, preventing them from crossing there. A very interesting publication called Holding the Line develops the actions of this battalion and the fundamental role of its commander, Harvey Fraser, who became a brigadier general after the war. This study can be found at the following link, https,//www.publications.usace.army.mil/portals/76/publications/engineerpamphlets/ep_870-1-38.pdf. He was commissioned into the British Army in 1907 and eventually attached to the 1st (Royal) Dragoons in 1910. Initially sent out to India, he then moved with his regiment to South Africa. By 1914 he was seeking help to leave the army and return to Britain, having decided to move to a career in politics. Whilst fighting on the Western Front, Grenfell became aware that lives were being regularly lost to German snipers. Using hunting skills he had developed at Panshanger, he taught his men how to crawl through No Man’s Land unseen, ‘steering by the stars’ in order to attack the German frontline trenches and gain intelligence. For this, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in the 1915 New Year Honours. On 13 May 1915, while Grenfell stood talking with a General Campbell, a shell landed nearby, injuring both men. Grenfell suffered extensive skull fracture, and underlying brain injury. He died from encephalitis on the afternoon of 26 May, aged just 27. The news of his death, precipitated the publication of his most famous poem ‘Into Battle’ in The Times. Today, Grenfell is most remembered for this poem, the closing lines of which read; ‘The thundering line of battle stands, And in the air Death moans and sings; But Day shall clasp him with strong hands, And Night shall fold him in soft wings.’ Winston Churchill chose other lines from the same poem for his collection of war speeches, Into Battle, the lines being set on the title-page of all copies from the sixth printing in April 1941. On 11 November 1985, Grenfell was among 16 Great War poets commemorated on a slate stone unveiled in Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner.
