A nice quality, late Victorian era studio portrait of a military bandsman. The photograph as been hand coloured / painted, to highlight his red tunic, ‘swallow nests’ to his shoulders, and the green facings to his tunic. He is pictured wearing the standard Home Service pattern helmet with spike. The detail of his helmet plate is unclear, but it could possibly be the Army Ordnance Department. Over his shoulder is strung a bugle, and he holds a pair of drumsticks, with a drum positioned to his left hand side. The photograph is housed in a gilt frame, with a fabric mount surrounding the photo. Approximately 35.9cm x 31.4cm frame size, image size 13.3cm x 9.5cm. Condition: generally good. The photo is clear, but there is some foxing. The painted details are quite vivid, but when looked at under magnification there is some crazing to the painted surface. The frame is solid, with just a tiny chip to the gilt surface on the left hand side.
Cap firing inert replica Colt New Army pistol in lined wooden presentation case with tools and replica inert cartridges and imitation trade label describing 'New Model Army Metallic Cartridge Revolving Pistol' An accurate and quality replica of the original Colt in full working order which will make an interesting collectors piece. Henri Fisher, French, late 19th/early 20th century- Horses at rest, with soldiers gathered around a fire beyond; oil on canvas, signed 'Henri Fisher' (lower right), 35.5 x 51 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work appears to depict a group of soldiers in a moment of rest, warming themselves by fire with their horses beside them, whilst another mounted figure beyond keeps watch, looking out to the lake which stretches beyond. The blue uniform of the soldiers recalls that of the Prussian army, although the specific conflict in which the scene may be set is not clear.
Richard Crosse, British 1742-1810- An Officer of a Regiment of the Foot Guards, shoulder-length, wearing a scarlet coat with blue facings and gold lace, his hair powdered; watercolour on ivory, oval, within a later gold and diamond brooch setting, 4 x 3.1 cm. Ivory reference number: NJJV6KQL. Note: Deaf and mute from birth, Richard Crosse initially took up miniature painting as a hobby. However, after his talent was recognised during a contest at the Society of Artists, Crosse moved from his native Devon to London, where he would spend a long and prolific career. Crosse is known to have exhibited across London from as early as 1760, including at the Society of Artists and the Free Society of Artists. He also frequently showed his works at the Royal Academy, where he is recorded as an exhibitor from 1770 to 1796. During this time he lived in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden – an area that had long been a popular destination for painters of miniatures, including Samuel Cooper (1609-1672) and Richard Gibson (1615-1690). Although Crosse could not provide his patrons with gossip and witty conversation during sittings, which would have been an important and expected part of the process of having one's portrait painted, this did not seem to hinder his career. Crosse's appointment as 'painter in enamel' to King George III in 1788 attests to his renown and his popularity with the aristocracy. The Royal appointment also shows Crosse's evolution as an artist, as he had transitioned to the challenging medium of enamel. He continued to push boundaries in watercolour miniature painting too, often working on uncharacteristically large supports. Army officers were frequent subjects for the artist, and an example similar to the portrait presented here was sold at Bonhams, 25 May 2011, lot 9 (£3,600). Another example is held at Kenwood House, Hampstead [no. 88421332].
Chambers Haldane McFall, British 1860-1928- Street scene - West Africa; oil on canvas, indistinctly signed 'C HALDANE MCFALL' and possibly dated (lower right), 61.5 x 92 cm. Provenance: Sarah Grand (according to an old label attached to the reverse of the frame). Note: McFall was an officer in the British Army who enjoyed particular success as an art historian, critic, and artist, twice exhibiting at London's Royal Academy. He served with his regiment in West Africa, writing about his experiences and producing illustrations for 'The Graphic' magazine. Amongst his publications, McFall wrote biographies of a number of artists, such as James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), François Boucher (1703-1770), and Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842). Sarah Grand (1854-1943) was McFall's stepmother, and an influential feminist writer of the early 20th century.
