Reginald John called Rex Whistler, 1905-1944, Flying Visit of Truth to Berlin in the form of an R. A. F. leaflet raid here fancifully depicted - but not forgetting a great many hard facts, The Illustrated Magazine, December 9th, 1939, black and white satirical map of an aerial view of Berlin, the verso with text What the R.A.F. sees over Berlin, 33 x 49cm; together with The New Forget-Me-Not Caldendar, decorated by Rex Whistler, Cobden-Sanderson, London, 1930; and L Whistler, Rex Whistler, His Life and His Drawings, Art and Technics, London, 1948 (3) Note: The map commemorates the first British "nickel" (propaganda leaflet raid) over Berlin during World war II. It took place in early October 1939 and was carried out by planes of RAF10 Squadron. The raid was promoted as a sign of Germany's weak air defences and its vulnerability to attack. The R. A. F. is represented by numerous putti wearing flying helmets and goggles and being led by a warlike Britannia. In the lower right corner are caricatures of Hitler, Goebbels and Goering, shaking impotent fists at the sky whilst Von Ribbentrop cowers beneath a table. They support a 'skull and crossbones' flag with the skull wearing an SS cap. Rex Whistler joined the army in 1939 but was killed in action in 1944 in Normandy at the age of 39.Please refer to department for condition report

(Prepared and brought in by Mr. Secretary Brodrick, Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Lord Stanley), 22 July 1903QTY: (1)Woods A6(b). RARE. "Churchill's first great oration" (Bloomsbury Publishing). According to Woods A6(a), this is the second English edition, the first edition, priced at twopence and 44 pp. but containing the same text, and "There is no clear evidence that this version was ever released, and I would therefore regard it as most likely that Churchill, displeased with its appearance, demanded a better production and got it.""Mr Broderick's Army consists of six speeches given by Churchill to parliament, in which he opposes his own party's military reforms, as proposed by the Secretary of State for War, St. John Broderick. The plans to expand the permanent peacetime Army from two to three divisions ran counter to Churchill's economical instincts and parallels have been made with his father, Lord Randolph Churchill's 1886 parliamentary conflict over Army Estimates. These speeches demonstrate Churchill's developing oratorical skill and the growing divisions between himself and his party. Indeed he would not long remain a member of the Conservatives. Often seen as Churchill's first great oration, Mr Broderick's Army marks the beginning of his long and illustrious political career." (Bloomsbury Publishing). The last copy at auction, bound in library cloth and lacking the final blank was sold at Christie's in 2010, the same copy previously sold in 1980, and only two copies since 1975.
