*Loop the Loop Aviation Poster. An exceedingly rare and large poster designed for Roland Garros performing the loop the loop in an exhibition at Cholet, France, 15th March 1914, printed in green and white on two white sheets, with an upside down aeroplane and printed signature of the artist P. Carrere adjacent, the text reading 'Tout a l'envers. Garros [text printed upside down:] Volera Tete en Bas Boucle la Bouclera' with circular upside down vignette of Garros's head placed beneath, printer's details to lower right margin, 'G. Delattre & Cie, 99 Fg. du Temple, Paris', minor marks and tiny old paper tape repairs to verso, some very light paper toning but overall in very fine condition, 230 x 156 cm (92 x 62.5 ins) This possibly unique survival is one of the earliest, if not the earliest, aerobatic aviation posters. The first loop the loop recorded was made by Lieutenant Petr Nikolaevich Mesterov on 9 September 1913 when he looped his Russian Army 70 HP Nieuport monoplane at Kiev in the Ukraine. At the time he was placed under arrest for risking army property, but when it emerged that he was a hero he was promoted to Captain. This feat was not known when Adolphe Pegoud pulled off the same trick on 21 September at Juvisy, near Paris. Between 25-27 September, Pegoud demonstrated his skills at Brooklands in England and by the end of the year a number of English pilots including B.C Hucks had learnt the trick themselves. The great early French aviator Roland Garros, who was to become a fighter pilot during World War I, performed this same trick to a delighted audience at Cholet on 15 March 1914. The place and date banner which have not been pasted to the bottom of the poster are to be found in the 1914 scrap album of the lot above. (1)

An Irish silver commemorative strawberry dish, by Mappin & Webb, Dublin 1967, with Sheffield import marks for 1967, inset with a medallion commemorating the 1916 uprising, diameter 12.5 cm, weight 7 oz. In 1916, a group of radical Irish republicans seized control of several key points in Dublin, including the General Post Office depicted in this medallion. They began their rebellion on the 24th of April (Easter Monday), attempting to take advantage of Britain's preoccupation with the war against the Central Powers. The rebellion was intended to inspire a general revolt against British rule throughout Ireland, with German assistance. However, the rebellion ended in military failure, as it was crushed by the British Army six days later. Initially, the rebellion was also a political failure, as the defeated rebels were booed and jeered by the population of Dublin, many of whom had family members in the British Army fighting in the trenches at the time. However, the British Government then made the monumental mistake of ordering the execution of most of the surviving ringleaders of the revolt, which created an outpouring of sympathy for the executed rebels and turned public opinion in favour of their cause, which eventually inspired the election of Sinn Fein candidates to most Irish constituencies in the Khaki election of 1918, and the subsequent Irish War of independence, leading to the partition of Ireland and the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922. Obverse This medallion commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising, and depicts the GPO on one side, with the inscription: AISEIRI NA CASCA 1916 - 1966 Reverse The reverse features the signatures of the seven military committee members responsible for orchestrating the rebellion, and who were executed by the British Government for their role in the uprising.

A collection of books and letters relating to Mr Matania, in two boxesFollowing Tennants successful sale of paintings by Chevalier Fortunino Matania (1881-1963) the Executors have consigned the remaining items from the estate. Chevalier Fortunino Matania (1881-1963) was the son of the artist Eduoardo Matania and studied in his father's studio in Naples. In assisting his father with his illustrations intended for the periodical "L' Illustrazione Italiana" his proficiency and talent was soon recognised in wider circles and Matania was producing his own illustrations for the magazine from 1895-1902. Before moving to Britain he worked as a travelling artist for magazines in Italy, Germany, France and England and in 1902, he was awarded a great honour in becoming the official artist for the Coronation of Edward VII for The Graphic magazine. Once in London, Matania was keen to produce works which were inspired by the world around him and driven by this he produced an unbelievably large, diverse and highly skilled output of work over more than 40 years, which appeared in The Graphic, The Sphere, Illustrated London News Britannia and Eve, and other instructive publications such as Look and Learn, towards the end of his career. A contemporary quote of the time referred to his endeavours as "intensely energetic and hardworking, always on the spot, his pictures were far more vivid than the artists who drew from their reports"Aged 22, Matania had a brief time away from London when he took military service with the Bersaglieri, in Italy, even here he had a studio appointed to him and he produced six large paintings for display within the Garrison. It was after his army service that he returned to London and it was in 1911 he was given the illustrious assignment as guest of George V at the Delhi Durbar (Indian Court) when he and his queen were installed as King - Emperor and Queen Empress. His association with the King and Queen Mary continued past this time and the original watercolour work "Cubiculum" (see lot 675) formed part of the collection of HM Queen Mary. By 1914 Matania became a war artist and he was in the trenches many times drawing from life to ensure that his paintings were realistic renditions. He is quoted as saying after this experience that "After it was over I realised drawings of innocuous functions would not appeal, photography had made great strides so I turned to something else, the reconstruction of historical events".His talent and success as an illustrator encouraged a number of commissions for advertising posters and catalogues and he produced work for companies such as Ovaltine and Burberry's, in addition to a series of railway posters for London Midland Scottish Railway Company and Central London Railway. The artistic output of this remarkable artist seems truly endless. In his pursuit of his ideals Matania stood alone amongst his contemporaries, he employed a resourcefulness rarely matched and always remained true to his notion of beauty and realism.

Mathieu Mategot, (French, 1910-2001), a Bellevue coffee table base, the yellow painted metal base lacking its circular glass top 37½ x 104cm (14 x 41in) Provenance: By repute, from the home of Dirk Bogard in the South of France Other Notes: Mathieu Mategot (1910-2001) was one of the most renowned designers in France during the 1950s. Born in Hungary, he moved to France when he was 21 years old. He volunteered for the French Army during the Second World War and was taken prisoner and freed in 1944. After the war, and throughout the 1950s, he designed furniture using steel and sheet metal. He was the first person to combine metal tubing with perforated sheet metal, known as rigitulle, a technique which he subsequently patented. To ensure the quality of production of his designs, he set up his own workshops and limited the number in production of each piece. In 1959, he abruptly ended his production of furniture and switched his attention to tapestries, with which he continued to work for the rest of his career. His furniture can be found on display in the Centre George Pompidou in Paris.

*Monroe (James, 1758-1831). Autograph letter signed 'James Monroe', Washington, 2 November 1821, writing while fifth President of the United States, to [Colonel Monroe], 'If the lady, with whom you have a particular relation in N York, has not return'd there, had you not better, avail yourself of the opportunity to go to Virg[ini]a, to see your father and his family? There are many reasons why you should take that step, which merit your attention. First it will be gratifying to your parents, to whom you may give useful advice as to their own concerns. Secondly, it will enable you to confer freely with your brother, and to give him advice also which may be useful to him. I understood from your father, than one reason assigned to your brother, for doing nothing for himself, and making no exertion, was a suggestion from you, that he had better remain as he was, till you saw him. I suspect that you merely meant, that when you saw, you would give him your advice, but did not mean, to prevent his exertions in the mean time. Another reason, occurs, in favor of this visit, which is that by withdrawing from N York, till the Lady returns there, and for some time afterwards, on a visit here and to your father, it'll be shown, that you do not rest your future prospects and hopes entirely on her, or her family. I think, the step would raise you in her estimation, and that the family as well as of others. It might be advisable for you to leave no message to her, and even to leave her to doubt, whether you had not been justly wounded at her going into Canada, after promising not to go. That however should be left to inference only, and not the subject of a message, nor would I say so, to any one, to report it to her. Hortensia [grandchild] is still dangerously ill. Your accnt. accompanied by Mr Hay, left this yesterday, for general [?] to afford such consolation as circumstances may require, and she be equal to. Col. Jane has returned in a very low state, just recovered, so far, from a long and distressing fever', light uniform toning, two pages, 4to This letter is partly quoted in 'Miss Douglas of New York' (ibid. p. 35. '...Betsy Mary, for all her charming, gentle appearance, was a straightforward character and knew what she wanted; moreover she and James Monroe were in love. Her mother disapproved - even though he was the nephew, almost the adopted son, of the President - on the grounds that he was in the Army and therefore unable to be "stationary", that he had no money at all except his Army pay, and that he was too young... Mrs Douglas did all she could to discourage the match; she succeeded in removing her daughter, against her will and against her given promise, to Canada again for the summer, and lingered there into November - a manoeuvre which prompted President Monroe to send his nephew some diplomatic advice [in this letter]'.
