Military – Gordon of Khartoum a small piece of wood measuring approx 10x4cm with brass plate affixed stating ‘This wood was taken by Sir Henry Rawlinson from the door of Gordon’s Palace at Khartoum 4th September 1898’. A remarkable association piece. Gordon had been killed in January 1885 – one of the most celebrated military incidents of the latter part of the 19th c. On September 2nd 1898 a well equipped British force under Kitchener destroyed the forces of Abdulla al-Taasgu the self proclaimed successor to Gordon’s killer Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad at the Battle of Omderman. Rawlinson was a Captain at that time and served on Kitchener’s personal staff. He later rose to be Field Marshal and was given the responsibility after Kitchener’s untimely death in 1916 of commanding the 4th Army in WWI – the army of civilian volunteers ‘Pals’ Regiments and those who had risen to Kitchener’s rallying cry to join up – who were cut to pieces in the first hour of the Battle of the Somme on July 1st 1916. This little sliver of wood therefore represents a remarkable association between two of the most important figures in British Military history.
WWI German intelligence manual on British Indian Army Published in German in Nov 1915 in Lille France by the AOK 6 (Armeeoberkommando = Hqs. 6thArmy) and signed off by the command’s intelligence officer Lubecke. Softcover wrapper 8 by 5.5 ins 37 pp glossy stock with 8 b&w photo plates (printed on one side only) and a folded map at the back. Condition: Some foxing to wrapper and scattered light pencil underlining in text. Binding is tight; there are no loose or unsightly pages; overall very good condition considering age and use as a field manual in a war zone. This manual which good authority holds to be very scarce contains background information photographs foreign language specimens a condensed dictionary and similar material intended to assist in the interrogation of Indian Army POWs captured by the Germans on the Western Front in France during the First World War. Key subjects mentioned in the test include: The 3rd (Lahore) and the 7th (Meerut) Divisions; the Indian Cavalry Division the Ferlsipur Brigade and its component regiments the Djallandar Brigade and its Sikh regiment; the 1st Manchester Regiment (multi-national) among many other units contributing forces to the Allied front. The manual describes the native soldiers of whom an estimated 160 000 fought in France and Belgium objectively and with knowledgeable respect for their training and fighting ability. It encourages German soldiers to treat their captives well “as they can be of good use to us in the present and the future” (p23). There is a reference to the POW camp at Zossen – Wünsdorf near Berlin where thousands of British Indian troops were imprisoned.
WWII – the Land Army Girls fine archive of approx 25 personal accounts from members of the Land Army during WWI – mostly ms but some typed together with original and copy photographs showing aspects of their lives. A fine archive which will doubtless yield new information on the Land Army. The letters were sent to a researcher for a book project which did not get to fruition. The accounts – some extensive – provide first hand anecdotes about the lives the girls led underlining the often austere conditions in which they worked. ‘...surprisingly enough I learned to live quite happily without running water gas or electricity and loved having oil lamps around...’ ‘...our training was horrific...the first day we were introduced to ‘Moley’ a tough looking elderly man in a moleskin jacket & with one tooth in the front of his mouth...we were given a spade each & all had to dig for worms....then came the next nightmare – we had to thread the worms with strychnine. That was the beginning of my mole catching experience ...’ ‘...the couple who ran the camp were middle aged he was quite nice but she was a right old battleaxe

India – Punjab - history of the Sikhs Rare 1849 ‘suppressed’ First edition in original blind stamped clot binding. The first complete non-bias history of the Sikhs written by Capt J D Cunningham of the British Indian Army. The account was seen as the most honest account of the history of the Sikhs with Cunningham even stating that Sikh Generals were in the pay of the British in the First Sikh War. For this reason this 1849 first edition was suppressed by Dalhousie and is most rare. Cunningham was ordered to revise the book and was demoted causing his death soon after. The book is widely seen as the epitome Sikh study and this edition is extremely scarce especially in original blind stamped cloth binding. Professional repair to the upper spine otherwise very fine complete with map hand coloured in outline.

India Sikh military group – Boxer Rebellion. A superb large group portrait of the Eight Nation Alliance including Sikh troops from the British Indian Army Italian Russian Japanese German USA and French soldiers c1890-1900. 26cms x 19cm. The Boxer Rebellion also called the Boxer Uprising by some historians or the Righteous Harmony Society Movement in northern China was a proto-nationalist movement by the “Righteous Harmony Society between 1898 and 1901 opposing foreign imperialism and Christianity The uprising took place in response to foreign “spheres of influence” in China with grievances ranging from opium traders political invasion economic manipulation to missionary evangelism. In China popular sentiment remained resistant to foreign influences and anger rose over the “unequal treaties” which the weak Qing state could not resist. There existed growing concerns that missionaries and Chinese Christians could use this decline to their advantage appropriating lands and property of unwilling Chinese peasants to give to the church. This sentiment resulted in violent revolts against foreign interests.

The first section deals with the Maharajah’s compensation of £30 000 of losses sustained of his furnishing and property destroyed by the mutineers of the Bengal Native Army at Fatehgarh Cantonement. The following pages relate to the maharajah state pension according the Treaty following the annexation of the Punjab where the maharajah argues is considerably less compared to the Nawab Nazim of Bengal (150 000) the Peshwa of Mahrattas (£80 000) and ex-King of Oude (£120 000) all of whom have been allowed to retain their private property and pensions exceeding the pension.
