Keith Vaughan (British, 1912-1977)Portrait of a Soldier pen and ink and wash on paper27.5 x 20cm (10 13/16 x 7 7/8in).Executed circa 1941-2Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Thomas Agnew & Sons Ltd, London, where acquired by the family of the present owner, 16 October 1985, and thence by descentPrivate Collection, U.K.ExhibitedLondon, Thomas Agnew & Sons Ltd, Keith Vaughan; Early Drawings and Gouaches 1940-1955, 15 October-8 November 1985, no. 49Vaughan registered as a conscientious objector at the start of the war. He faced his tribunal in August 1940 and was given a dispensation against having to handle weapons. Soon after he joined No. 9 Company as part of the Non Combatant Corps where he spent the early part of the war building roads, working on the land and filling sand bags. This was the first time in his life he felt part of something worthwhile and, despite the laborious, backbreaking work, began to forge important friendships. He helped his less literate comrades write letters home, spent evenings round the barrack room stove listening to the wireless, or talking with the more intellectual recruits about art and literature. Whenever he could he painted and his subject matter was the daily life of the army and the gruelling work his company carried out. As we see here, Vaughan also painted his comrades using the most modest of materials due to rationing and army regulations. We are grateful to Gerard Hastings, whose forthcoming book Keith Vaughan: The Graphic Art will soon be published by Pagham Press, for compiling this catalogue note. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
