Field Marshal William Riddell Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood, (13 September 1865 - 17 May 1951) was a British Army officer. He saw active service in the Second Boer War on the staff of Lord Kitchener. He saw action again in the First World War as Commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, leading the landings on the peninsula and then the evacuation later in the year, before becoming commander-in-chief of the Fifth Army on the Western Front during the closing stages of the war. Field Marshal Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere (14 November 1773 - 21 February 1865), was a British Army officer, diplomat and politician. As a junior officer he took part in the Flanders Campaign, in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War and in the suppression of Robert Emmet's insurrection in 1803. He commanded a cavalry brigade in Sir Arthur Wellesley's Army before being given overall command of the cavalry in the latter stages of the Peninsular War. He went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Ireland and then Commander-in-Chief, India. In the latter role he stormed Bharatpur-a fort which previously had been deemed impregnable. Good Condition. A rare antique late 18th / early 19th century George III 1796 pattern-type period British Army heavy cavalry sword. The blade marked for the ' King's Light Dragoons ' with motifs. The ricasso stamped ' Cullum '. The handle with folding guards, and sharkskin handle decorated with silver twist-rope adornments. The period leather scabbard decorated with brass ringlets and buckles, with the ' GR ' cypher impressed to the leather. A rare example of an early cavalry sword. Measures approx; 109cm long in total.  Condition: generally in good condition for it's age, the blade suffers some surface rusting and usual expected wear and tear. Largely a very good example.
