In the mid-1930s, he was recruited to work for the Daily Mirror under the nickname 'Lensman'. He became a member of the Mass Observation movement, taking pictures of daily life in working class communities and also taking on work as a photographer for the recently established Picture Post. During World War II, Spender served briefly in the Royal Army Service Corps before being appointed an official war photographer. Humphrey and his brother Stephen bought and lived in The Great House, Lavenham from 1934 until 1948.Donated by the Estate of Humphrey Spender
THE ARMY- EVERTON 1934 Four page programme , The Army v Everton, 5/11/1934, played at Command Central Ground, Aldershot. Everton fielded a strong side including Dixie Dean and won 8-0. Pencil scorers noted, Dean got 1 but Stevenson scored 3 and Coulter 2. Scarce programme. Slight creasing. Generally good

Notable fixtures include FA Cup 3rd Round 2nd Replay single card v Bolton (clear tape at side), Royal Navy v The Army, Villa ' A v Hereford United (Birmingham & District League) plus England v Wales at Villa Park plus League matches v Manchester United and Chelsea. All programmes are with covers and have been beautifully bound with gilt lettering. Generally good
ARSENAL Autograph album page containing 13 signatures from Arsenal 1944-45, includes Male, Barnes, Mortensen (who played for Arsenal at times during the war), Joy, Bastin, Drake etc. The reverse side of the page contains eight Army team signatures from 1945 including Swift, Lawton, Mercer, Sproston, Watson, Brittan and Rowley. WARTIME 1945 Single sheet programme for game played in Italy, 5/5/45, Allied Football Championships Quarter Final, 5 Army v 2 District, quite a few players with Football League experience including Shaw of England and West Brom, Fields (Arsenal), Burnet (Everton), Collier (Man City) etc plus four players from the Brazilian Expeditionary Force , not entirely sure what they were doing in Italy in World War 2. Scarce. Generally good
WARTIME 1942 Scarce single sheet Dulwich Hamlet programme for game , British Army v Czechoslovak Forces, 7/3/42 at Dulwich, the British team was made up of amateur players including 3 from Walthamstow Avenue and others included White of Spurs and Hopper of Reading. The programme has two punch holes and is a little creased but condition is "Fair". Also included is a boxed rectangular medal inscribed on one side "Football Meetings of the Allied Armies In Great Britain , February-March 1941" and the other side is inscribed " The Czechoslovak Army to Its Friends In The Fight For Freedom." Comes in original box with name of manufacturer , Butler and Co, Birmingham noted inside the lid. This medal is from the Czech captain and organiser, Deutelbaum and was probably a medal that the Czechs presented to opposing teams. As described

Box generally dirty. Armoured cars playworn but complete. 1 passenger missing head, 2mounted knights damaged, 1 missing arm. Unrelated additional arm present. Cardboard box for fort is crushed, but it is base of fort.
