Gwilym Pritchard (1931-), "Cadair Idris", signed, titled and dated 1998 on verso, oil on canvas, 37 x 45cm.; 14.5 x 17.75in. * Studied at Normal, Bangor and Birmingham College of Art, 1960 -64. Held several teaching posts, settling at Anglesey, an area of key importance to his painting. Decided to become a full time artist in 1973, commissioned work including some for the British Army in Belfast. Pritchard was a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, also exhibiting with the Royal Eisteddfod, Welsh Arts Council, Society for Education in Art and North Wales Group. Had regular solo shows, starting with Howard Roberts Gallery, Cardiff in 1961, other venues including New Art Centre and Heal`s Mansard Gallery. St. Michael`s Church, Ruabon, Clwyd has a mosaic by Pritchard, whose work is in many public collections, including University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, Welsh Arts Council and Contemporary Art Society for Wales.

Two medals presented to a Lieutenant G.E Moss, the Great War for Civilisation medal and the 1914-19 medal and a medallion presented In Token Of Lincoln`s Gratitude Served In The Great War 1914-19. Provenance: Major. G.E. Moss a native of Lincoln was commissioned in the Machine Gun Corps, May 1917 and returned to the Western Front, he was attached to the 51st Highland Division. He was reported missing in action during the German invasion in 1918, however was actually taken prisoner and on the cessation of the war was ultimately retired from the Army with a rank of Lieutenant. In his professional life Major Moss carried on as a Dentist in his Dental Practice in Forest Town, Mansfield.

Paul Gerchik, American 1915-1998- Children dancing in a circle; brush and black ink and watercolour heightened with white, signed, 43.5x55.7cm: together with two other works on paper by the same hand one of a mother and child and the other of a woman seated half-length, both in gouache, mixed technique, both signed, 56x43.5 and 56x43cm., (3) (unframed). Note: Paul Gerchik was born in New York city and received his art education at the Art Students League in New York. He subsequently taught drawing and painting at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Later he moved to Los Angeles where, at the outbreak of the war he was appointed an official war artist by the United States Army, creating political cartoons for army newspapers. He pioneered and developed the use of art therapy for wounded soldiers in military hospitals,. After the war he worked as a director and production designer in the film industry in Los Angeles. He continued to paint and to exhibit widely on the West Coast. His work has been exhibited at the National Gallery, Washington DC, the ACA Gallery , New York, the Columbus Gallery of Fine Art, Columbus, Ohio, The Los Angles Museum of Art, The De Young Museum, San Francisco, the La Jolla Art Museum and the Long Beach Museum, California.

Military – Afghan Wars – Lt Col Dennie fine ms document being a long list of charges brought against Lt Col William Dennie of 13th Light Infantry at Agra by the order of Maj Gen James Watson Commander in Chief India. A total of 28 charges written in a neat secretarial hand on 13pp folio. A remarkably long list of charges against a senior officer. Dennie is charged with deserting his men bullying falsifying muster rolls using offensive language etc. Clearly Dennie was one of those heroes who didn’t suffer fools gladly and followed his own military agendas. But a hero Dennie certainly was as he later played an important role in the storming of Kabul at the start of the first Afghan War his account of the campaign was published in 1843. A remarkable and intriguing document which reveals considerable information on the British army at this time.

Napoleon nine original issues of the Liverpool Mercury October to January 1812-13 containing bulletins of the Grand Army and detailing the Battle for Moscow the burning of the City Napoleon’s entry into the Kremlin the Kremlin mined and blown up and the arsenal barracks and magazines destroyed Napoleon’s eventual defeat and the retreat from Moscow etc with a map showing the Seat of War in Russia. Good condition throughout.

American Army 1843 fine gossipy and extensive ms letter written by Simon Fahnestock a 2nd Lieutenant in the American Army 4pp 4to closely written and cross written on three pages. In the letter Fahnestock describes his life in the Army discusses his future and why he joined providing a picture of army life at the time. He later served in wars in Mexico and against the native Americans. After his army career he served as an attorney.

A statesman’s life – ephemera – scrap album a particularly fine scrap album charting the entire life of Paul Odgers CB OBETD who became a senior civil servant during the 1970s. The album charts his life from birth with photos of him as a baby and a small child through his school career and then into the Army during WWII – there is an original photograph of Montgomery and a cyclostyled document which has been signed with initials by Montgomery. The rest of the album contains a wealth of ephemera including invitation cards from various bodies including the Royal palaces photographs etc etc. A particularly fine and informative album of one man’s life.

Palestine a fine snapshot album taken by a British soldier during the period of the great Arab Revolt between 1936 and 1939 with approx 170 snapshots showing various aspects of Palestine during that time – including shots taken at the funerals of four British policemen killed during the troubles. Other shots include military convoys and vehicles police patrols towns archaeological sites etc etc. There is also one shot of a hanging in the street. The Arab Revolt was an unsuccessful nationalist uprising by Palestinians against British colonial rule and Jewish immigration. It was brutally suppressed by the British Army and the Palestine Police Force. More than 2000 Arabs were killed and it proved to be a precursor to the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

Korean War a rare copy of the US Intelligence Handbook No 65 dated August 16th 1950 prepared for the Korean War. Marked ‘Restricted’ 39pp 8vo with paper covers including text and folding maps aerial photographs etc. In an ‘as used’ condition but unblemished otherwise. A significant document for the Korean War. This was issued by the Military Intelligence Section of the US Army and contains basic essential geographic and topographical information intended to provide operational information to officers and non commissioned officers in the combat zone and as such as the primary blueprint for the American military involvement in the war. The main thrust was the invasion involving some 350 warships and 70000 men into the dangerous tides of Inchon harbour. Regarded as a strategic masterpiece the invasion succeeded and within two weeks the North Korean army was largely destroyed or made ineffective. This was to lead to the establishment of the UN force which effectively recover South Korea as a nation in its own right.

Stalin and the Soviet Union rare poster dated 1921 showing a Red Army soldier looking at his boots. The poster stresses the fact that equipment is in short supply and urges the soldier to take great care in looking after his property. Issued by the State Chromo-Lithograph works. Approx 24x18ins.

India and the Punjab Bhagat Singh and his comrades – rare pubilcation by Ajoy Ghosh – 36 pages in English 1946. A rare insight into the great Sikh freedom fighter talks about his character his time in prison etc. Bhagat Singh was an Indian nationalist considered to be one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement. He is often referred to as Shaheed Bhagat Singh the Urdu word Shaheed meaning “martyr”. He belonged to a patriotic Jat Sikh family some of whose members had participated in Indian Independence movements and some others who had served in Maharaja Ranjit Singh`s army. On March 23 1931 at 7:30 pm Singh was hanged in Lahore jail with his fellow comrades Rajguru and Sukhdev. Spine is worn and repaired overall a good reading copy.

India and the Punjab – Sikh Wars – The Life of John Nicholson 1898 Sikh wars – Brigadier-General John Nicholson (11 December 1822 – 23 September 1857) was a Victorian era military officer known for his role in British India. A charismatic and authoritarian figure Nicholson created a legend for himself as a political officer under Henry Lawrence in the frontier provinces of the British Empire in India. Involved in the First Anglo-Sikh War as a junior officer he was taken under the wing of Henry Montgomery Lawrence along with several other similarly-aged officers such as Herbert Edwardes. Chapters include – The Punjab in 1847 – The Punjab Campaign – The Punjab Conquest. Also chapters in Indian Mutiny. A few illustrations and a map of the Punjab. 333 pages – good condition. A rare account of a soldier who served in the British Army during the Sikh wars.
