Lot 690

Ca. 100-200 AD. A gold ring with a circular band, slightly flared shoulders, and a round bezel set with a carnelian gem depicting a scorpion. The ring is in excellent condition and it is suitable for modern wear. The scorpion was the emblem of the Praetorian Guard, the Roman emperor's personal army elite unit. The praetorian scorpion has long been recognised as a reference to Tiberius, who was born under the astrological sign of the Scorpio, and who first concentrated the praetorian guard in its own camp in Rome, thus giving it full corporate identity (Russell and Hellström 2020, 135). Hence, it is not inconceivable that this ring might have belonged to a praetorian guard. Cf. Russell, A., Hellström, M. (2020). The social dynamics of Roman imperial imagery. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. Cf. Gisela M. A. Richter, Catalogue of Engraved Gems Greek, Etruscan, Roman; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Plate LXII, 533.Size: D: 17.45mm / US: 7 1/4 / UK: O 1/2; 4.72gProvenance: Private London collection; British art market 1990s.

Original vintage WWI recruiting propaganda poster published by The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee: Britons! Your Country Needs You. Text printed in large red letterings over a map of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Printed by Saunders & Cullingham, London. As in the rest of Europe, the outbreak of the First World War was greeted with popular acclaim in Britain. Around 30,000 men were enlisting every day by the end of August 1914. Propaganda posters helped persuade men to enlist. Tasked with boosting enlistment in the armed forces, the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee occupied a central place in the government’s wartime communications machinery. Although the technology to enable the relatively inexpensive mass production of high quality images had been in existence for over a century, the First World War saw the first extensive use of posters for propaganda purposes. The British Parliamentary Recruiting Committee (PRC) was a thirty member body organized by political party organizers, under the supervision of the War Office, with the express aim of aiding the raising of troop numbers in Britain’s volunteer army. The main modes of appeal were through mass recruiting rallies and through posters and pamphlets that encouraged enlistment. Within a few weeks of the outbreak of the war the designs of poster began to incorporate striking graphic images. Some 200 different posters were produced and distributed by the PRC over the course of the War. War posters were intended to be ephemeral and never meant to be archival or historical documents. Yet, because of the content of the messages they projected they have become an important resource by which we can today explore the mind set of those who believed passionately in the rightness of the cause and the necessity to wage War between 1914 and 1918. Fair condition, paper losses, tears, staining and foxing. Country of issue: UK, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 76x50, year of printing: 1914.

Original vintage WWI propaganda poster: La Grande Guerre - En Avant!! (Text translates as: The Great War - Advance!). Woodcut print with hand colouring through stencils by Eduardo Garcia Benito (1891-1981) featuring a group of soliders standing in the trenches looking out for the enemy. This print takes as its subject the conflict in the Bois de la Grurie, in the forest of Argonne (France's Champagne region). Fierce fighting took place in this area as the German army tried to reach Verdun. Both sides dug trenches into the ground, which was dense with trees. French authorities were keen to encourage the French public to believe that there were legitimate grounds to hope for victory, but without the slightest suggestion that victory might be imminent. The image does not convey the horror of trench warfare, where mud-soaked soldiers lived in waterlogged dug-outs, without access to latrines and with no opportunity to dry their clothing. The wet also brought additional dangers: infections, infestations equipment failure and the collapse of trench walls. Print no. 35 from the 2nd series La Grande Guerre. Published by Tolmer & Co. Eduardo Benito was a Spanish fashion illustrator and painter, noted for his Vogue covers of the 1920s and 1930s. He studied at the Mignon studio, and later trained under Daniel Vierge. In 1912 he moved to Paris, he later spent 15 years painting Vogue covers. Among Benito's subjects as a portrait painter were Alfonso XIII of Spain, Paul Poiret, and the Chinese Royal family. Also in 1912, he won a scholarship to study at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Good condition, small tears in top margin, folds, foxing and staining in margins. Ex-works, Jack Blackwell, Francis Beart, 1949 ISDT1949 Norton 490cc Trials Motorcycle ProjectRegistration no. JOV 758Frame no. 24835Engine no. C4 18573CT•Gold Medal winner at the 1949 ISDT•Offered for reconstruction•Well documented'Off road' authority Don Morley has confirmed that this motorcycle was one of four used by the Norton factory for the 1949 International Six Days Trial, held that year in Wales. The rider was A J 'Jack' Blackwell, who won a Gold Medal (see results on file). For each year's ISDT, the ACU would invite the top British factories to submit their machines and riders for what were known as Selection Tests. These were usually run by the Army and involved several days of competition over a series of very tough courses resembling what would be encountered come the ISDT itself.Norton's top rider in 1949 was Rex Young, who could not be picked as he was an Australian; hence none of Norton's riders were picked to represent GB in the Trophy squad, though pre-WW2 star Jack Williams was chosen for the ACU team in the lesser Vase competition. There was also a separate manufacturers team trophy, which Norton considered worth contesting and so they fielded a three-man team comprising Rex Young, Jack Blackwell and R Clayton. Additionally there was also a Sidecar Award and for that they entered Arthur Humphries. The accompanying original RF60 logbook shows that 'JOV 758' was registered to Norton Motors on 5th August 1949, with legendary Norton tuner/entrant Francis Beart listed as '1st change' on 28th August 1950. The machine had matching numbers at that time (the engine was changed in 1953). A VMCC dating letter states that the engine currently installed was dispatched to Ray Petty in 1948. Registered to '2nd change' owner John Robert House in 1951, 'JOV 758' was back at Beart's shop in 1959 (see second RF60 logbook on file) and was sold on.Sadly, Francis Beart's records are unavailable; however, there is a hand written notebook on file labelled 'Norton 500T Log Book JOV 758' and annotated 'taken from Francis Beart's logbook' – detailing a comprehensive rebuild of JOV in October 1959 (examination highly recommended). No doubt the new owner will have great pleasure researching the history of the machine in Beart's ownership.Sold strictly as viewed, this Lot consists of a frame and an incomplete engine only. Also included in the sale are an old-style V5; the second RF60 logbook; the aforementioned VMCC dating letter; copies of The Motor Cycle and Motor Cycling's 1949 ISDT editions; and a photograph of Jack Blackwell competing in the 1949 ISDT. The Dave DegensDresda-Triumph 8-valve 500cc Racing MotorcycleFrame no. DA7Engine no. DA7•Built for Classic racing in the 1980s/1990s•Very successful•Highly developed specificationDave Degens began racing in 1956 on a BSA Gold Star. After a year racing the 'Goldie', Dave bought an AJS 7R from Twickenham dealer Geoff Monty and raced it with some success, only to have to sell the bike back to Monty when called up for National Service in the Army. Fortunately, Dave had an understanding CO, who allowed him time off to go racing, commencing with an outing at Brands Hatch aboard one of Monty's 350cc Manx Nortons. Dave kept racing Monty's bikes while doing his National Service and began working for him when it was over. In 1963 Dave bought Dresda Autos, formerly a retail outlet for scooters on Putney Bridge Road in Southwest London. By this time he had already built three Tritons. As Dave's business activities began to expand, so did his racing career. By this time he had already built three Tritons. As Dave's business activities began to expand, so did his racing career. He rode for prominent entrants such as Syd Lawton, Paul Dunstall, Tom Arter and Tom Kirby, and it was while riding for Lawton that he enjoyed his first taste of endurance racing success, winning both the 1964 and 1965 Thruxton 500-mile races on a Triumph Bonneville. It was at Barcelona in 1964, when he was riding a works BMW, that Dave conceived the idea of building a machine specifically for endurance racing, which he was convinced would be capable of beating the works prototypes. The result was another Triton. Dave's faith in the project was duly rewarded when he and co-rider Rex Butcher won at Barcelona in 1965, enjoying a trouble-free ride against formidable factory opposition. By this time Syd Lawton had lost faith in the complacent British motorcycle industry and switched allegiance to the Italian Aermacchi company with which his name is forever associated. Dave was surprised to discover that the diminutive pushrod singles handled better than a Manx Norton; so he took the logical next step and built a Norton Featherbed-style frame incorporating Aermacchi geometry: the Dresda had been born. It was on a Dresda-Triumph that he won the Barcelona 24 Horas for the second time, in 1970 with Ian Goddard. Dave then began to wind down his racing activities but returned in the 1980s, competing in Classic events.Dave was immensely successful in Classic racing in the 1980s and 1990s on this very fast Dresda-Triumph 8-valve machine. Specification highlights of this highly developed racer include a Nourish 180-degree crankshaft; new bearings; lightweight valves; bronze combustion chamber hemispheres with squish; electronic ignition; crankcase breather conversion; pressurised oil feed to the rockers; Amal Concentric Mk2 carburettors; five-speed gearbox; belt primary drive; Dresda box-section swinging arm; Smiths 12,000rpm tachometer; and 18' Akront alloy wheel rims. The race fairing is loose/detached but is included in the sale. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require re-commissioning and thus is sold strictly as viewed. 1911 FN 493cc FourRegistration no. BF 9154Frame no. 37555Engine no. 531• Pioneering Veteran-era four-cylinder motorcycle• Acquired as a project in 2009• Restored over the next 10 years• Fitted with the rare Horstmann gearbox Like BSA, La Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre ('FN', for short) began as a munitions manufacturer, turning to the production of motorcycles in 1900. Today the Belgian company is best remembered for its sensational four-cylinder models, the first of which appeared in 1904 and was first exhibited publicly at the 1905 Paris Cycle Show. Designed by Paul Kelecom, the FN was the world's first practical four-cylinder motorcycle, its smooth, almost-vibrationless operation setting it apart from rival singles and v-twins. Advanced for its day, the 362cc air-cooled four featured 'atmospheric' inlet and mechanical (side) exhaust valves, a robust five-bearing crankshaft, individual crankcase oil wells ensuring adequate lubrication for the connecting rods, and reliable Bosch magneto ignition. Shaft final drive was another innovation. Supported on ball bearings, the driveshaft ran inside the right-hand frame member to a bevel gear on the rear axle. At first there was no clutch, the direct-drive machine being started by pedalling away until the engine fired. Two brakes (drum and rim-type) both operated on the rear wheel. The engine was enlarged (to 410cc) in 1906 and again in 1910, on this occasion to 498cc, and in 1911 the factory introduced its own two-speed transmission, similar to that already offered by Horstmann in Britain, which was contained within the drive-shaft housing. Responding to demands from sidecarists for more power, FN introduced a 748cc, 7hp four – the Type 700 – for 1914. This new engine was a sidevalve of 'T'-head layout, with mechanically operated valves and a mechanical oil pump, which drove the three-speed gearbox via a steel, multi-plate clutch. Pedal starting was dispensed with on the Type 700, a kick-start mechanism being added at the right-hand side of the engine. The Type 700 had not been in production long before the FN works was seized by the invading German Army in the autumn of 1914. The occupying Germans used the FN factory to manufacture ammunition while continuing production of the Type 700, which had a top speed of around 45mph and was widely used by despatch riders. The model remained in production up to 1923 when it was replaced by a new IOE four featuring overhead inlet valves. Chain drive was adopted soon after. This wonderful FN Four was purchased by our vendor as a dismantled project from a Mr J Harris of Surrey on 16th September 2009; it was in a dilapidated and rusty condition but found to be remarkably complete, including original tools and a rare Horstmann gearbox. The FN had belonged for many years to Mr Arthur Freakes of Walton-on-Thames, Surrey (see sheet in history file re previous owners). The engineer owner has completely rebuilt the FN mechanically and cosmetically, including doing some of the nickel plating himself (the balance by a professional plater, and all in the correct semi-dull finish). The owner has been careful to preserve the originality of the machine with great attention to detail, including careful repair of the saddle bag using the original leather. A kickstart has been fitted per the 1911 specification; however, the engine has also been modified for a 'pull start' on the flywheel. Before fitting the engine into the frame it was run while strapped to the owner's lathe bed. Since its installation in the frame the engine has been started and sounds wonderful. A spare engine complete with flywheel and working magneto is included in the sale together with a spare crankshaft, camshaft, and other parts. Last run in March 2023, the machine is offered with an Indian Riders MC dating letter; photocopied Horstmann technical literature; photocopied 1913 catalogue and parts list; restorer's technical drawings; and a V5C registration document.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Dave's conception was proved right when he and co-rider Rex Butcher won at Barcelona in 1965, enjoying a trouble-free ride against formidable factory opposition. By this time Syd Lawton had lost faith in the complacent British motorcycle industry and switched allegiance to the Italian Aermacchi company with which his name is forever associated. Using the new Dresda frame and a 650cc unitary consruction Triumph engine, in 1970 Dave won at Barcelona for the second time, with Ian Goddard on this occasion, and this versatile chassis would later accommodate all manner of multi-cylinder engines from Japan. Hand built by Dave Degens and raced to victory by him and Ian Goddard in the 1970 Barcelona 24 Horas against the combined might of the British and European factory teams, the historic machine offered here has been featured in numerous motorcycling books and magazines over the years. Notable features include twin Amal Concentric carburettors; 18' Borrani wheel rims; Dresda large capacity glassfibre fuel tank; Krber 10,000rpm tachometer; integral headlamp; and a double-sided eight-cam front brake, believed the only one cast in magnesium rather than aluminium. In 1963 Dave bought Dresda Autos, formerly a retail outlet for scooters on Putney Bridge Road in Southwest London. By this time he had already built three Tritons. As Dave's business activities began to expand, so did his racing career. Built in 1969, the machine offered here is the first to use the lightweight Dresda frame. Dave used this Dresda-Triumph to win the 1969 Scarborough Gold Cup; the last occasion that this prestigious race was won by a British rider on a British machine. Having won the Barcelona 24 Horas for the second time, in 1970 with Ian Goddard, he wound down his racing activities but returned in the 1980s, competing successfully in Historic events.Specification highlights of this highly developed racer include a Nourish 180-degree crankshaft; Nourish cams; Carrillo con-rods; lightened valves and rockers; squish-band cylinder head; electronic ignition; crankcase breather conversion; twin Amal Concentric Mk2 carburettors; Quaife five-speed gearbox; belt primary drive; Dresda box-section swinging arm; and a conical rear hub. It should be noted the glassfibre fuel tank is loose and that the oil filler plug is missing. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require re-commissioning and thus is sold strictly as viewed. It is hoped that supporting documentation will be available at time of sale. c.1945 Sertum 250cc Military MotorcycleRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. 31058Engine no. 70654Founded in 1922 in Milan, engineer Fausto Alberti's factory specialised in the manufacture of industrial engines and out board motors before producing its first motorcycle under the Sertum brand name - a 175cc single-cylinder four-stroke - in 1932. Many types of machine were made during the 1930s, ranging from a humble 120cc two-stroke single to a sturdy 500cc unitary construction sidevalve twin. Sertums competed in many endurance trials, including the ISDT, proving quite successful in this role, and contracts were secured for the supply of machines to the Italian Army. Despite a reputation for first class quality, Sertum stopped production in 1952, its new models having failed to catch the imagination of the public, which was more interested in mopeds and scooters. Presented in military livery, the single-cylinder sidevalve model offered here is typical strongly built and well designed. Unitary construction of engine/gearbox, cast-iron cylinder barrel and head, friction-damped rear suspension, blade-type girder forks, and full-width alloy hubs are a few notable features. Restored by Roger Ashby, the machine has been owned by the vendor for 10 years but has never been used. Recommissioning will be required before further use. There are no documents with this Lot. The Dave Degens, 1965 Barcelona 24 Hours-winning1965 Dresda Triton 650cc Racing MotorcycleRegistration no. ULP 715FFrame no. X 737Engine no. T120 DW 376•Built specifically for the 1965 Barcelona 24 Hours race•Restored by Dave Degens•Alan Dudley Ward engine•Ridden by Dave at the 2006 Goodwood Festival of SpeedDave Degens started racing in 1956 on a BSA Gold Star. The result was another Triton, its engine tuned for reliability and acceleration out of corners rather than top speed, as the Montju・ circuit had a lot of hairpin bends. Dave was surprised to discover that the diminutive pushrod singles handled better than a Manx Norton; so he took the logical next step and built a Norton Featherbed-style frame incorporating Aermacchi geometry: the first Dresda had been born. Using the new Dresda frame and a 650cc Triumph engine, he won at Barcelona for the second time, in 1970 with Ian Goddard, and this versatile chassis would later accommodate all manner of multi-cylinder engines from Japan. Hand built by Dave Degens and raced to victory by him and Rex Butcher in the 1965 Barcelona 24 Horas against the combined might of the British and European factory teams, the machine offered here can be said to have started the Dresda legend. Well known motorcycling journalist John Ebbrell tested this Dresda Triton for Motor Cycle magazine's 19th August 1965 edition, riding it from London to Edinburgh and back (copy available). For the test the Triton carried 'temporary' plates ('EYU 993C'); it was later registered as 'ULP 715F'.In 1968 Dave sold the Barcelona Triton. With the demand for Tritons booming, within a few years he needed a bike to use as a pattern for future machines; he bought a Manx rolling chassis, minus its rear wheel, only to discover that it was his Barcelona winner. In 1965 co-rider Rex Butcher had donated a Manx rear wheel to the project and must have reclaimed it somewhere along the line! Specially built for endurance racing, this Dresda Triton consists of a Manx Norton frame wrapped around a Triumph pre-unit racing engine. The engine currently fitted came from the workshop of renowned tuner Alan Dudley Ward, hence the 'DW' stamping. Other notable features include a duplex primary chain conversion; Triumph close-ratio gear set; an additional battery; breather to the primary drive cover; twin Amal GP carburettors; Lucas competition magneto; 19' alloy wheel rims (Dunlop front, Borrani rear); large capacity alloy fuel tank; and a Smiths 10,000rpm tachometer. Dave rode the completed Dresda Triton at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2006. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require re-commissioning and thus is sold strictly as viewed. It is hoped that supporting documentation will be available at time of sale. Key not required.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
