Terence MacSwiney's Paper FIANNA FAIL (The Irish Army). A Journal for Militant Ireland. Nos. 1-11 (all published), Cork, 19 September - 5 December 1914, various printers. Folio, mostly 4 pp (one double number). Fine copies. (1) Edited, financed and mainly written by Terence MacSwiney, later Lord Mayor of Cork, whose death on hunger strike in 1920 was a turning point in the independence struggle. Its main purpose was to support the Irish Volunteers, and to oppose Irish recruitment to the British Army at the start of the First World War. It reports the Volunteer controversy with Redmond in detail. It was suppressed after the eleventh issue, which reports a promise of German support for Irish freedom given to Roger Casement in Berlin. It did not circulate outside Cork, and complete sets are rare. After the paper was suppressed, MacSwiney sold his books to pay the printer's bill. He died on hunger strike some six years later. His centenary occurs this coming October.

George VI Regular Army Long Service Good Conduct Medal Awarded to Serjeant Sidney Charles Royal Engineers Who Was Taken Prisoner of War at the Fall of Hong Kong and Killed When Being Transported to Japan on the SS Lisbon Maru which was Sunk by US Submarine USS Grouper in 1942, George VI Army Long Service Good Conduct medal with Regular Army bar, named in the correct style to “1862399 SJT S CHARLES R.E.” The medal is housed in its original forwarding box. Accompanying the medal is photocopied research and a copy of the book “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru – Britain’s Forgotten Wartime Tragedy” by Tony Banham. Sidney Charles was born on 13th April 1900 in Gillingham, Kent. His civilian trade is listed as Shipwright. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers in at Chatham on 9th June 1922. He served with various units of the Royal Engineers before being posted to 40th Fortress Company Royal Engineers in Hong Kong. He was reported missing and prisoner of war of the Japanese on Christmas day 1941. Charles along with 1,815 other British and Canadian prisoners, taken at the fall of Hong Kong were loaded onto the transport ship SS Lisbon Maru, and was on its way to Japan when it was attacked and sunk by the US Submarine USS Grouper with the loss of over 800 passengers, it was stated that some prisoners were shot by Japanese soldiers as they tried to escape the sinking ship. The Japanese did not mark the ship detailing that Prisoners of War were being transported so allied submarines had no clue as to the cargo on board. The book accompanying this medal details the event, it tells the story of many of the prisoners struggles with the Japanese soldiers who had no intention in trying to help them at first, it states that Sidney Charles was one of those men who managed to escape the ship but was eventually overcome by the water, “As Royal Engineer Sergeant Sidney Charles, born in Gillingham Kent on 13th April 1900, drifted away from his companions, he must have eventually realised that he would never see his wife, Alice, whom he had married in 1931, and son, David again.”
Rare Georgian Officers Full Dress Sabretache of The 1st Royal Dragoons 1820-1830, untouched as found example of the large type sabretache with heavy bullion embroidered centre with oakleaves around a large central crowned GR cipher. Outside is a thick embroidered brocade with bullion embroidered battle honours PENINSULA and WATERLOO. Complete with flap pouch to the reverse. The bullion worn and brocade has been left uncleaned and has a dark patina, the backing velvet has faded to brown. A scarce early sabretache to a elite regiment of the British army at this period. The 1st Royal Dragoons, served during Wellington’s Peninsula campaign and distinguished themselves at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 as part of the Union Brigade, they famously captured a French Eagle of the 105th Line Regiment, the battle of Waterloo being 5 years previous to the issue date of this type of Sabretache, it is perceivable that this example was once owned by a veteran of the battle.

Rare WW1 American Ambulance Field Service Adrian Pattern Steel Helmet, fine example of a standard model Adrian helmet with much of its horizon blue paint finish to the exterior and interior of the shell. Helmet has the American eagle and US shield badge of the organisation to the front. Interior of the helmet retains its original two colour leather liner system and leather chinstrap. Some rusting to the exterior of the shell but generally a good example. The American Field Service was a group of American Volunteers who served overseas, mostly with the French Army, before America entered the war in 1917. The volunteers were mostly medical service and drove ambulances, transporting wounded men to behind the lines. At its height, the Field Service numbered 2,000 volunteers and operated not only on the Western Front in France but also in the battle areas of Italy, Greece, Serbia and Albania. The service attracted young volunteers from the American literati: college students, poets and writers including an eighteen-year-old Ernest Hemingway who used the experience as the basis of his novel A Farewell to Arms. The volunteers were expected to pay for their transportation to Europe and for their meals while there. The American Ambulance Field Service operated as an independent volunteer agency until America's entrance into the war in 1917 when it was absorbed by the American Army.
