His citation reads 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The enemy having possessed himself of one of our advanced posts, had managed to occupy a farm enclosure between two of our posts, under cover of the darkness and the protection of the hedges. This N.C.O. with twenty men attacked with great alacrity at early dawn, and by skilful and fearless leading drove out the enemy, who lost many killed and seventeen prisoners, while his own casualties were few. The result of this operation had unmistakable effects in holding up the enemy's advance, and the eagerness of this N.C.O. to undertake the attack and the manner in which it was carried out were worthy of praise.', with copy paperwork
British Army WW1 and WW2 Royal Artillery Military Cross group of ten awarded to Major P J A Montague comprising Military Cross, War Medal and Victory Medal named to Major P J A Montague, WW2 1939/1945 Star, Africa Star with clasp for 8th Army, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal with emblem, 1937 Coronation Medal and French Croix de Guerre. Citation reads 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. After withdrawing under heavy artillery three of the guns of his battery from a very exposed position, he kept his fourth gun in action until the enemy had advanced to within a few hundred yards of the position, when it was destroyed. On another occasion he kept his battery in action in spite of heavy fire from hostile artillery, which was causing many losses, and assisted by two of his officers he personally fought one of the guns when all the detachment had been killed or wounded. During a critical period his cool and collected demeanour gave confidence to the men, and his untiring energy and personal gallantry were an example to all under his command.'

He was one of seven brothers who served in WW1 which he survived.
