World War I.- Bright (Lt. Col., Richard George Tyndall, Rifle Brigade, Royal Flying Corps, 1872-1944).- Collections and Recollections of S. Farnborough & RFC [Album of letters to the Royal Flying Corps of persons expressing an interest to join the Royal Flying Corps and suggestions for new weapons], c. 95 pieces, most letters, most autograph, a few typed, some accompanied by drawings, folds, browned, all tipped-in to an official Army Book, original boards, manuscript label on upper cover, cloth spine defective with loss, letter v.s., album folio, 1914-15. *** "Dear Sir, I am unjustly detained here as mentally unstable & the police do not interfere. Can you make use of your military authority to send me an escort of 2 armed soldiers, with greatcoat and hat for myself, as I would willingly join the RFC. I was in the O.T.C. of Edinburgh University. All expenses will be paid."A rather sad collection of letters from obviously unsuitable candidates wishing to join the Royal Flying Corps. They range from the clearly deranged to the well meaning, but sadly both were utterly ignorant of the realities of aerial warfare. Ideas for weapons include a drum of fine string from which could be suspended a bomb, bombs filled with cayenne pepper to "cause a momentary lull in firing" and fixing "sharp knives" and fixing "sharp knives" beneath the wheels of aircraft in order to puncture Zeppelins gas tanks.
