Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Joseph E. Johnston" Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32c Joseph E. Johnston Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 29, 1995. A proud Virginian, Joseph Eggleston Johnston graduated from West Point in 1829 and served with distinction in the Black Hawk and Seminole wars. He also distinguished himself in the Mexican War, where he was decorated for bravery at Cerro Gordo. In June 1860 he became quartermaster general of the army, but resigned his commission when Virginia seceded from the Union. As a major general of the Virginia volunteers and a full general in the Confederate Army, Johnston fought at the first Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861, where he personally led a charge carrying the colors of the 4th Alabama Regiment. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks on May 31, 1862, and was disabled from service for several months. His army tried gallantly to lift the siege of Vicksburg in 1863, but lacked the manpower to succeed. In December 1863, he took charge of the Army of Tennessee and executed a brilliant tactical retreat before General William T. Sherman's advance toward Atlanta. In 1864, Johnston was relieved by President Jefferson Davis, who thought him too cautious. By 1865, however, he was in command again, fighting several battles against General Sherman and ultimately surrendering to him at Durham Station, North Carolina, on April 26, 1865. After the war, Johnston served as a member of Congress from 1876 to 1878, and was United States commissioner of railways from 1885 until 1889. Ironically, he served as a pallbearer at the funerals of Generals Grant and Sherman. Image Size: 14 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 23 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15207)
Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Winfield Hancock" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32c Winfield Hancock Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 29, 1995. Winfield Scott Hancock was born at Montgomery Square, Pennsylvania, on February 14, 1824. He graduated from West Point in 1844 and served in the Mexican War, in Florida, in Kansas during the border struggles, and in Utah. When the Civil War broke out, he was commissioned a brigadier general in the Union Army in September of 1861 and fought in the Peninsular Campaign. At the Battle of Antietam, on September 17, 1862, Hancock was given command of a division and soon earned a reputation as an inspiring leader. In December of that year, at the Battle of Fredericksburg, his men courageously attacked Marye's Heights, suffering over 40-percent casualties. But it was at Gettysburg that he had his greatest moment. On July 1, 1863, as Union and Confederate troops converged there, Hancock was directed by General George G. Meade to take command of all Federal troops and report his opinion of Gettysburg as an appropriate site for a battle. Hancock's arrival on the field inspired Union troops. On the third day of battle, although Hancock was severely wounded, his men turned back General George Pickett's gallant charge at Cemetery Ridge. Hancock recovered from his wound and after the war he commanded the military districts of Louisiana and Texas. When his wise policies of moderation were criticized by radicals in Congress, he was assigned at his own request to command the Division of the Atlantic. In 1880, Hancock was nominated as the Democratic candidate for president, but lost the election to James Garfield. Image Size: 14.5 x 12 in. Overall Size: 23 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15203)
David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "Statue of "Mother Russia"" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Battle of Stalingrad 1942 stamp issued August 23, 1992. Before Stalingrad, Germany ran roughshod over all of Europe. After it, German armies continued to run -- but generally back to the Fatherland. Hitler's massive 6th Army, which had crushed Holland and Belgium, arrived at the fortified city of Stalingrad in August. A five-month siege followed, with Russians fighting Germans street to street, house to house. Then the brutal Russian winter began to take its toll on the Axis forces. In the end, their supply lines cut off, 94,000 surviving Germans surrendered. The rest had fallen victim to biting cold and the equally lethal bite of Russian steel. Image Size: 24.25 x 15.5 in. Overall Size: 27 x 23.75 in. Unframed. (B13912)
Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Leatherworker Craftsmen" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Leatherworker stamp issue of July 4, 1977. During the Colonial era, leather was one of the most widely used materials. It was used for boots, shoes, coats, gloves, aprons, belts, harness, and many other things. Belts drove simple machines and served as valves in pumps. When America's War for Independence started, the need for leather for military use increased at once by leaps and bounds. The leather harness, for instance, pulled artillery guns and wagons. And, to protect fragile paper musket cartridges from dampness or damage, leather was used to make stiff waterproof cartridge boxes. Every soldier needed one, for damp cartridges could lose battles. As the army grew, more leather was needed. The constant cry from commanders in the field for supplies was not always heeded, but civilian craftsmen, and Leatherworkers in particular, were responsive when possible. To increase production, they shortened the tanning process, producing only slightly inferior leather. In their own shops they worked long and hard, knowing that in the army men went without shoes. These civilian craftsmen answered freedom's call as fully as soldiers and sailors. They, too, risked their lives and their fortunes as collaborators of rebellion. Image Size: 26 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 30.25 x 24 in. Unframed. (B05136)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c C-5 Galaxy stamp issued July 19, 1997. With a wing span of 222 feet, 8-1/2 inches and an overall length of 247 feet, 10 inches, the C-5 Galaxy is one of the largest aircraft in the world. The military transport plane's huge drive-through cargo bay is capable of accommodating 98% of the range of equipment used by the U.S. Army, thus enabling it to deploy troops, helicopters or tanks almost anywhere in the world. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14426)
