**A FINE GERMAN BRONZE SALUTING CANNON DATED 1714 with tapering multi-stage barrel formed with raised astragal mouldings, strongly moulded muzzle, cast with bands of elaborate scrollwork behind the muzzle, of the first reinforce and the chase, the latter incorporating the crowned coat-of-arms of the Duchy of Wurttemberg enclosed by foliage and the former with a scrolling panel with the abbreviated inscription and the date `17 E.L.H.Z.W.14` for Eberhard Louis Herzog von Wurttemberg, raised collar-shaped vent, a pair of dolphin lifting handles, a pair of long plain trunnions, and globose cascable moulded en suite, with the muzzle and drawn-out to a pierced button chiselled with acanthus: on a later finely constructed iron-clad field carriage painted in polychrome and fitted with a pair of spoked wheels 67.3 cm; 26 1/2 in barrel 2.5 cm; 1 in bore Eberhard Ludwig, tenth Duke of Württemberg (1676-1733), was the only son of Wilhelm Ludwig of Württemberg (1647-1677) and succeeded to the dukedom when under a year old. During the years of his minority, the duchy was ruled by a regent, his uncle Friedrich Karl. In 1693, when Eberhard Ludwig was sixteen, the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I proclaimed him duke in order to secure the duchy`s support for the Empire: strategically situated on the right bank of the Rhine, Württemberg represented a significant bastion for the Empire against the aggressive encroachments of Louis XIV`s France. Often popularly represented as a spendthrift and proto-absolutist ruler unduly influenced by his mistress and her family, the duke was typical of many of his peers - the rulers of the German princely states - in seeking to establish and increase the status of his duchy through overt magnificence, military expenditure and diplomatic manoeuvring. His uncle had created a standing army from Württemberg`s militia in the early 1690s and the duke capitalised on that initiative by increasing the size of the army: both men also raised regiments of Württembergers for the specific purpose of hiring them as mercenaries to other states. Although loyally allied to the Empire and the anti-French `Grand Alliance` during the War of the League of Augsburg (1688-97), the duke was ambivalent in his allegiance during the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-14) and periodically flirted with the idea of a French alliance in the hope of increasing his status; his appointment as Imperial Field Marshal in 1712 was made in order to secure his loyalty to the Empire. The ending of the war with France in 1714 left Württemberg in considerable debt and the duke without his desired enhanced political status. In the same year, though, hostilities between Venice and the Ottoman Empire began; Venice had hired Württemberger soldiers during an earlier war with the Turks and so, in October 1714, the Serene Republic approached the duke for a large contingent of men. In the event, the duke was out-manoeuvred by the Viennese court, his personal negotiations with Venice failed and the Württemberger soldiers ended up in Imperial service at far lower rates of pay than the Venetians would have paid. It is possible that this gun was cast in 1714 as part of the duke`s attempts to provide appropriately equipped forces for Venice. A colourful figure with considerable, if poorly focussed, ambition, Eberhard Ludwig failed in his principal aim: the establishment of absolute rule in a duchy with a fully funded army and genuine status within the Holy Roman Empire. The cultural achievements of his reign - the building of Schloss Ludwigsburg, for example - must be regarded as outweighing the military and political ones. See Wilson 1995.

In 1815 he was sent to the American colonies as commanding general of the army of Upper Peru where he was appointed Viceroy of Peru in 1821, a post he held until 1824. The correspondence files of the Ministry for Foreign Relations includes an entry for a pair of embellished Versailles pistols from the First Consul in 1802 to Mariano Luis d`Urquijo, Spanish first minister for Foreign Affairs at the beginning of the 19th century. The d`Urquijo pair remain unknown and it has been suggested that they might be the present pair, having been later presented by the Spanish First Minister to the Viceroy of Peru. This theory is strengthened by the following entry for a number of pieces for the Ministry in the Annuaire of the Versailles Manufactory for AN X, or 1802: Ministre du Relations Extérieur Pistolets gros calibre a secret, arg. gravé riche, fr. 2.400 Nécess. acajou, pistol. arg. gravé, chaînette, roulet. damasq., fr. 1.200 Nécess. acajou, pistolets de combat, argent, cis. 1er modèle, riche, placage arg. damasq., bassinets or, fr. 3.000 Service: 2 fusils doubles forestiers A related pair of pistols, with similarly decorated barrels, trigger-guards and ramrod-pipes, are preserved in the Wallace Collection, nos. A1219 and A1220. The number of ramrod-pipes on both pairs of pistols is unusual for Boutet. The use of platinum is probably a very early modification, perhaps added at the same time as the pistols were fitted into the present case. The anti-corrosion properties of platinum were well known by 1800 and it was used to line shotgun barrels by Jean LePage circa 1819. Nicolas-Noël Boutet (1761-1833) the distinguished maker of armes de luxe inherited the position of gunmaker to Louis XIV from his father-in-law, Pierre de Sainte (active 1747-88). In 1792 he became technical Director at the new Versailles Manufactory and in 1800 rose to Directeur Artiste with overall control. He held this position until the closure of the manufactory in 1818. Boutet died fifteen years later in poverty, his career having survived six French Political regimes.

Iconic Vehicle of the 2nd World War Jeep was useful cause itÂ’s a Scout car which was also used as a lightweight transport vehicle. Very practical and handy with 4 wheel drive and a light weight he was first produced by a small manufacturer: Willis then by Ford. At the end of 2nd World War and with Marshal Plan France was full of American war furniture and vehicles A lot of Jeep Willis were available. In that context French army decided to reconditioning and repair Willis cars in order to deal cars under license over France they made a partnership in 1946 with Hotchkiss: a French car manufacturer. They made a real alliance in 1952 and at this time the French firm could also produce his own Willis: The new Jeep Hotchkiss MB 201 was born. Similar to the old one this Jeep have new body elements: Bumpers accessories mirrors lights etcÂ…. Concerning the engine itÂ’s a real evolution: the 4 cylinder 12v is replaced by a 4 cylinder 24v Hotchkiss. Our car is a MB201 Hotchkiss completely original exclusively with genuine parts. Some works are expected to revive this car.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN MISTAKEN ABOUT THIS POLISH CAMPAIGN. THE RUSSIANS BEGAN TOO LATE OR TOO EARLY. They were too late for the frosts of the winter, which would have given them good roads, dry though cold bivouacques for their troops, horses, &c., and would have facilitated the passage of the rivers. They were too early for the spring and summer. Their first successes were stopped by the state of the rivers which were absolutely unpassable, that is fully covered with ice not stony enough to bear the passage of troops. In this state no bridge can be made till the débâcle of the ice takes place, till the river is cleared of floating ice , and moreover till the waters, increased by the general thaw will have collided with the natural bed of the river. DURING THIS INTERVAL THE RUSSIAN ARMY WAS UNDER THE NECESSITY OF HALTING. Their first successes which brought them up to the Vistula, and had driven the Poles out Warsaw, left the latter in possession of the tête de pont of Praga [sur la rive droite de la Vistule face à Varsovie] , and the Russians in possession of the suburb of Praga itself. The Poles made two or more attempts to dislodge them but in vain , and the Russians continued to the last, I believe, in possession of Praga. In the meantime the Russian army could not remain en corps. It could not bivouaque on the same ground during the thaw. If men or horses could have held out against the evils of such a residence, the general could not have fed them. The roads in this season are impracticable for his horses and carriages , the rivers could not be navigated or used for transport by sledges. He was under the necessity therefore of separating them in cantonments as well to give them dry lodging as food. There, cantonments were necessarily extended , and he ventured to extend them under cover of his pontoon in Praga. IN THIS STATE OF THINGS, THE POLES HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE FIRST DISAPPEARANCE OF THE ICE – and before probably the river has collided within its banks – to cross the Vistula by bridges laid above or below the bridge of Praga, or they may have crossed by boats. THEY HAVE FALLEN UPON THE RUSSIAN ARMY IN ITS EXTENDED CANTONMENTS , AND HAVE MOST PROBABLY DONE IT A GREAT DEAL OF MISCHIEF. It is not impossible that the troops in the suburbs of Praga may be cut off altogether. The Poles must, with their collected force, have fallen upon separate companies, battallions & regiments , the confusion must have been great , and no man at this distance can venture to guess what the loss really has been. I SHOULD NOT HOWEVER THINK THE SUCCESS SO IMPORTANT IF THE REPORT OF IT WAS NOT ACCOMPANIED BY A REPORT OF THE INSURRECTION OF THE LITHUANIANS. This insurrection will be assisted and encouraged by the success of the Poles , at the same time that the insurrection will be encouraged and promoted by the same events. CAMERA MACHINE GUN. It`s not every day one will come across an extreme rarity like this. When commercial air travel began to hit its stride in the 1930s its use as a military application was already in its stride and being perfected. The US War Dept. (which eventually changed names to the Defense Dept.) was training combat pilots to an unstoppable force. Since it wasn`t practical to practice with live ammunition the US Army Air Corp with the help of engineers at Fairchild Aviation developed a camera gun that operated like the machine guns the airmen were used to firing while being able to record their maneuvers to improve shooting accuracy. This item in heavy gauge nickel plated bronze was designed to mount in an aircraft like the machine guns of the period with an interior to hold film with the trigger snapping pictures at a rate of up to 6 frames per second. Complete with cross-hair sites, wooden handles and a long barrel it mimicked the look of the military machine gun. Affixed with an official plaque identifying it along with a serial number of ""A.C. 37-217"". Accompanied by documents pertaining to aerial photography including an equally rare official War Dept. technical manual dated July 8, 1941 and a de-classified manual for aerial gunnery dated August 1919 (these were most often destroyed) as well as correspondence between the present consignor and aeronautical historians about the camera gun. A fabulous trove of information and historically significant piece of modern military history. SIZE: 37"" l. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. Internal camera mechanism itself is no longer present. 1-14159
