He studied at the former Dundee Art College in Bell Street before being called up to the army towards the end of the Second World War for service in India and Ceylon. On returning to Dundee he began work in the art department of DC Thomson where he illustrated for The Rover and The Victor, amongst others. After leaving D C Thomson’s went on to illustrate over 100 books but also continued to maintain a connection with the company, featuring in more than one thousand issues of The People’s Friend as the pen and brush of J Campbell Kerr. He also documented old Dundee with his lively pen and ink drawings and book collaborations with the late journalist, broadcaster and Courier columnist Ron Thompson. Latterly he followed in the footsteps of two artists he greatly admired, Joan Eardley and his good friend Lil Neilson, producing vibrant, expressive paintings of Catterline and the East Coast of Scotland which he loved so much. His work is held in public and private collections worldwide. Although his work appears at auction infrequently, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 6th March 2022 lot "At Johnshaven", (less than half the size of "On the Edge"), sold for £300 (hammer).

(restored section to rim)Footnotes:Sinon was a Greek warrior during the Trojan war, who pretended to have deserted the Greek army and was taken captive by the Trojans. He then proceeded to convince them that the Greeks had left, leaving a large wooden horse behind as an offering to the gods. Silver square presentation salver ' Lt Gordon Anderson ASC from his brother officers on his Marriage June 3rd 1916', the reverse engraved with signatures and with a gadrooned and shell moulded border W31cm Sheffield 1915 Maker Mappin and Webb 32ozProvenance: Gordon Wright Anderson was married to the seller's grandmother, Cicely Charlotte Dodgson. 3rd June 1916, the date on the salver, was their wedding day. Anderson was a lieutenant in the Army Service Corps and was the son of William Charles Anderson. Anderson survived the First World War, only to die of Spanish Flu on 20th November 1918. My grandmother had been nursing him and had fallen asleep at his bedside. She berated herself for not hearing the doctor's knock at the door, and Anderson died that same day. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Downe, Bromley, Kent. He is commemorated on the Keston Men (WMR 12729) Memorial in Keston, Greater London.Cicely later married Anderson's best friend, Walter Stanley Norris. Norris was a member of the HAC, hence the presentation of the silver salver. Walter Stanley Norris was the seller's grandfather.

A VERY INTERESTING LATE 18TH CENTURY SILVER CASED POCKET CHRONOMETER BY THOMAS EARNSHAW the white enamel dial signed Thomas Earnshaw Inv.t. et Fecit No. 502, the movement is further signed and numbered, also signed London 2841, the silver watch case is hallmarked for London 1800, the outer original pair case is missing, the watch is fitted with his Earnshaw Spring Detent escapement with fused bi-metallic three-arm balance wheel with 'sugar tongs'-temperature compensation, 50mm dia The watch by repute belonged to Lieutenant-Colonel the Honourable Henry Cadogan (26 February 1780-21 June 1813) a British Army officer who served and died during the Peninsular War at the Battle of Vittoria. This is mentioned in a handwritten note with the watch

He served over seas in Malta, Gibraltar, Crete and Egypt, serving with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers except for a short period with the Leinster Regiment, 1890-93 He went to the R.H.M.
