Lot 316

Juni 1755 in Fox-Amphoux; ? 29. Foreign Militaria - France : Sword to the small uniform (Glaive de Petit Apparat), for a member of the Directory, from the estate of Paul Barras (ex Collection Bernhard Franck). Handle of chiselled, gilt bronze. Blade with the inscription: "Pour la Nation - Vaincre ou Mourir" (For the Nation - Victory or Death). Scabbard of gilt bronze with a garnet red velvet base. This sword comes from the estate of Grand de Deydem, whose ancestor was the aide-de-camp of Paul Barras (sold after his death, 28 May 1921, Hôtel Drouot, no. 103 of the catalogue). Paul-François-Jean-Nicolas, Vicomte de Barras (* 30 June 1755 in Fox-Amphoux; ? 29 January 1829 in Chaillot) was a French politician and a member of the Directory, of which he was the only member continuously from 1795 until its dissolution in 1799. It was by chance that he witnessed the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789. Until then, the Vice-Count de Barras had no firm political ideas. He met Mirabeau at Sophie Arnould's house. Perhaps it was this meeting that led him to join Freemasonry and then the Jacobin Club and to enter politics as a republican. He failed as a candidate for the legislature for the Var department. However, he subsequently became a member of the National High Court in Orléans. After this was dissolved, he returned to Paris and was appointed commissioner of the Italian army. He then succeeded in being elected to the National Convention of 1792 and voted for the execution of Louis XVI. He took a leading part in the overthrow of Robespierre from the 9th Thermidor in 1794. He later became president of the National Convention. In 1795, Barras was one of the first five directors of state. After the coup d'état of 18 Fructidor V (4 September 1797), the triumvirate of Barras, Louis-Marie de La Révellière-Lépeaux and Jean François Reubell took power in the Directory. Joséphine de Beauharnais, later Napoleon Bonaparte's wife, was his mistress. Barras promoted the young general who had put down a royalist uprising against the Directory for him in Paris, putting him in charge of the Italian army and later supporting the Egyptian Expedition. Napoleon's coup d'état of 18 Brumaire VIII (1799), however, forced Barras to resign. Barras had favoured both Napoleon's and Joseph Fouché's rise, which did not prevent the two from deposing him and sending him into exile. Barras only returned after Napoléon's abdication, although he was also stigmatised as a regicide (Régicide). Provenance: Grand de Deydem estate auction 28 May 1921, Hôtel Drouot, no. 103 of the catalogue. Bernard Franck Collection, auction at Hotel Drouot Paris, 3 and 4 April 1935 "Collections Bernard Franck (Quatrième Vente) Èpoque Révolution, lot 191. The sword is mentioned in the title page of the auction as one of the "highlights" and is illustrated and described on pp. 23 - 25. The original text of the catalogue reads: "Glaive de Petit Apparat, de Membre du Directoire, ayant appartenu à Barras. Ernst Horadam (* 4. Juli 1883 in München; ? 23. Weimar Republic - Reichswehr : Important grouping of awards and documents of the leader of the Freikorps Oberland Major Ernst Horadam. St. Annaberg - Cross - neck decoration, personal badge of Major Ernst Horadam. Silver plated and black enameled, on original neck ribbon with sewn loops (ends cut off and loose enclosed). Silesian eagle separately stamped and applied. Riveted on reverse. 44 x 44 mm. On the back the maker's mark: "FLECK SOHN / HAMBURG ". Exceptionally rare, the only known original example of the neck decoration of the St. Annaberg - Cross, which, apart from Major Horadam as former leader of the Bund Oberland and responsible for the storming of the Annaberg, was worn only by Captain Oestreicher (see Ingo Haarcke, Freikorps - Auszeichnungen, Vienna 2019, p. 386). Attached are some highly interesting photos of Major Horadam wearing the neck decoration of the St. Annaberg Cross. In addition, Major Horadam's large medal group, interestingly enough, he wore his father's 1870 Iron Cross instead of his own Iron Cross from 1914.In addition, all awards and cases, EK 1st class 1914, Silesian Eagle (2), badge Bund Oberland, KVK 1st class 1939 with award document, personal shoulder boards, a number of badges as well as a multitude of personal documents.Particularly interesting and historically very informative and important are his extensive records on the storming of the St. Annaberg in 1921. Ernst Horadam (* July 4, 1883 in Munich; ? October 23, 1956) was a German officer, leader of the Freikorps Oberland and SA-Obersturmbannführer. The son of a first lieutenant, he joined the Bavarian Army's 2nd Infantry Regiment "Kronprinz" as an ensign on July 5, 1904. On March 8, 1906, he became a lieutenant in the 8th Company of the regiment and on August 25, 1913, a first lieutenant in the 2nd Company. From 1914 to 1918 he participated in the First World War. On May 19, 1916, he was promoted to captain in the II Battalion. In April 1919 he took over the command of the Freikorps Oberland. In April 1920, as commander, he led the VI Battalion (Oberland) of the Temporary Volunteer Corps of the Rifle Brigade 21 their operation against the Red Ruhr Army in the Ruhr. From May-July 1921, as commander of the Freikorps Oberland, he was largely responsible for the storming of the Annaberg (landmark and shrine of Upper Silesia) in the 3rd Polish Uprising. For the active participants in the battles of May 21, 1921, he founded the Annaberg Cross for the 10th anniversary. The Freikorps Oberland was transformed into the Bund Oberland after its dissolution by order. At the end of 1921 Horadam became a member of the federal leadership of the Bund Oberland and in 1922 became deputy business manager. From July 1922 he was head of the finance department of the Bund Oberland and head of the Oberland regional office for Swabia and Lower Bavaria. On March 15, 1923, Horadam was expelled from the Bund Oberland together with Beppo Römer because they had called for special actions and active resistance against the occupation of the Ruhr region by the French without the knowledge of the Bund leadership (after the proclamation of passive resistance in January 1923 by the Reich government). Both soon came into opposition to the Bund leadership and the new course under Friedrich Weber, which probably accelerated this expulsion. In 1925 Major Horadam became a member of Ludwig Oestreicher's (former leader of the 1st Company/Freikorps Oberland) battalion "Alt-Oberland" and in 1929 an extraordinary member of the Wehrverband "Wehrwolf". From 1935 he was SA-Obersturmbannführer and staff leader of the SA-Brigade Unterfranken. On December 3, 1939, he became a ma

Ipswich born Private Reginald Makeham of the Gordon Highlanders and No. 2 Commando was one of seven men who were captured after Operation Musketoon, and later executed at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Berlin, on 23rd October 1942. He was aged 28.Operation Musketoon was the codeword for a WWII British-Norwegian commando raid on an electricity generating station and aluminium manufacturing plant at Glomfjord, in German-occupied Norway. Two officers and eight men from No 2 Commando alongside two Norwegian corporals working for the SOE set off on 11th September 1942.They crossed the North Sea on a Minerve-class submarine belonging to the Free French Navy, Junon, which was chosen due to its silhouette appearing similar to a German U-boat. Upon reaching the shore they set out on a difficult overland mountainous trek to Glomfjord, which took several more days. They established a hide-out overlooking the plant and, despite close encounters with German scouting groups, decided upon the night of 20th September to carry out the attack, as they were running low on supplies. After infiltrating the plant, the men helped the Norwegian workers to escape and planted plastic explosives around the pipes and machinery. One German guard was killed and another wounded during the operation, but the men completed their mission before German reinforcements arrived. The destruction they caused was hugely out-of-proportion to the small number of men involved in the special operation and the plant remained closed for the rest of the war. However, during the attempted escape, seven of the ten Commandos were captured, taken to Colditz Castle, and later executed at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp under Hitler's infamous Commando Order. It was not until the proceedings of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials that the raid and the criminal imprisonment and execution of the Commandos became common knowledge, as the German Army had stated that the commandos had escaped. The men, including Makeham, are commemorated on the memorial plaque at Sachsenhausen and the Brookwood Memorial for British and Commonwealth Second World War soldiers who have no known grave. Wilkinson marks are worn.Gouge to the pommel. No further condition issues which cannot be seen in the images.
