Hake was an evangelical preacher; very ugly, stuttering and porcine; though poor he was unscrupulous about getting into debt, which he did frequently and to a considerable degree; he concealed meanness under a rather excessive air of benevolence; it comes as no surprise that he was direspected by his parishioners.

WORLD WAR TWO BATTLE OF MONTE CAMINO MILITARY MEDAL, Immediate Award, 2615780 L'CPL J EDWARDS G DS London Gazette 23 March 1944. Guardsman Joseph Edwards, 6th Battalion Grenadier Guards was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal but was instead decorated with the Military Medal. The recommendation, which when granted was n signed by Field Marshall Earl Alexander (then C-I-C 15th Army Group) reads: "This Section Commander found himself under H.G. fire from five different directions at once. By his excellent control of the section two of these were rapidly silenced but three of his men were hit. Under heavy fire from the remaining H.G.s he went to their aid and by his immediate attention was responsible for saving the lives of two. These he subsequently helped down the hill and returned bringing with him on his own initiative reinforcements. Later on the same day while his Section was held down to the ground with fire he found his men running short of ammunition. In spite of being wounded himself he crawled round four section posts collecting ammunition from casualties and delivering it to his men before consenting to go back and get his own wound dressed. His great leadership, gallantry and outstanding courage were undoubtedly the cause of his men remaining in an extremely difficult position."
