WING COMMANDER SIR ROBERT GRAINGER KER THOMPSON KBE CMG DSO MC. Signature of RAF hero and post-war Spook. At the start of WWII Thomson joined the RAF, and was serving in Macao when the Japanese attacked. Escaped with a suitcase full of money and a knowledge of Cantonese he gambled his way across China to Burma. Liaison officer with the Chindits in the Burma Campaign, being awarded the DSO and MC the latter an unusual army decoration for an RAF officer. Later in the campaign he flew Hurricanes and was promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader in 1945.1916-1992 He became a counter insurgency expert and widely regarded on both sides of the Atlantic as the worlds leading expert on countering the Mao Tse-tung technique of rural guerrilla insurgency. Woodward and Co Limited, London 1894, modelled as a standing sailor with his hand on his hip, his beret inscribed 'EDINBURGH', on a capstan shaped stand on three tripod legs, height 21.8cm, approx. weight 9oz.

A military watercolour by Richard Simkin: 10th Light Dragoons 1793, officer, bugler and four troopers advancing with company in background, 13” x 9”, framed and titled. Good Condition Plate 45 Note: Richard Simkin (1840-1926) worked in Aldershot, a prolific artist of military subjects, also painted recruiting posters and illustrations for the Army & Navy Gazette.
A Third Reich photograph album, containing approx 120 photographs (some loose), mostly family, rural scenes, seaside, and farming with horses, and also RAD groups and informal army on manouvres (?); also 2 empty photograph albums with padded leather covers, each bearing metal eagle and swastika, one with 1939 Iron Cross, the other with rifle and helmet. GC (slight wear to the latter). (3)
13 German 1914-1918 bronze Honour Crosses with swords, with various maker’s marks, 9 of which have ribbons, and another without swords (no suspender), mostly VGC; 3 Third Reich officer’s bullion embroidered cap cockades in wreath, including army officers in gold on pale khaki cloth backing; 6 army cloth trade badges, in as new condition; and 2 other items. A Victorian officer’s embroidered pouch of the 8th The King’s Royal Irish (Light) Dragoons (Hussars), scarlet cloth with gilt braid border to flap, finely embroidered with VR cypher on which is superimposed a prominent lion on crowned Irish harp, below this scrolls “The King’s Royal” and “Irish Hussars” all within a wreath of shamrock, ornamental gilt belt loops to panelled scarlet leather pouch with label of “Hamburger & Co 30 King Street Covent Garden. Manufacturers. Lacemen to the King”, and inside the flap another label “Helmets, Swords, Shabraques, Caps & Accoutrements, Saddlery etc with every Appointment. For the Army and Navy”. A US .54” Model 1842 Army percussion holster pistol, 14” overall, barrel 8½” stamped at the breech “US” (faint) and “NWP”, the lock marked “US/H. Aston” and “Middtn/ Conn/ 1849” (worn), the walnut halfstock having regulation brass mounts and swivel ramrod. GWO & C (cleaned overall with some pitting to the barrel, the hammer spur crudely replaced). Plate 12
A rare Maori carved 30 bore Calisher & Terry breech loading rifled percussion carbine, 38” overall, barrel 21” engraved on the breech “Terry’s Patent 30 Bore” and along the barrel “Calisher & Terry, Maker to HM War Department” with folding ladder rearsight; the lock engraved “Calisher & Terry, London”, walnut fullstock profusely carved overall with intricate Maori decoration; steel mounts, the trigger guard numbered 6334; with front sight swivel only and original steel cleaning rod. Good Working Order and Condition, the metalwork with dark patina overall (butt trap lid missing) Plates 73 Note: Calisher & Terry carbines were the standard weapon used by the British Army during the Maori wars, this was obviously a captured weapon.

A scarce 6 shot .36” Starr Arms Co double action Navy percussion revolver, 11½” overall, barrel 6”, number 2863 on all parts, frame stamped with maker’s name and patent date. Good Working Order and Condition, with dark patina and trace of original finish (the butt some wear). Only 3000 of this model were produced, compared to 23,000 of the Army model. Plate 77
A scarce World War I Turkish official’s “Enveriye” award dagger, the 8” blade impressed on one side with the “shahada” Islamic decoration of faith, and on the other side with the tughra mark of Sultan Mehmed V, star and crescent, Arabic date 1334 (1918), serial number 2039, etc, the hilt and sheath embossed with brass panel pattern retaining traces of red background, the sheath with flat pierced bar for suspension which is also stamped with the serial number. Good Condition Plate 80 Note: The “Enveriye” dagger was an honorary award bestowed by the Turkish War Minister Enver Pasha on deserving Turkish officers and German officers serving with the Turkish army between 1914 and 1918, and which approximately 5000 were produced.
