A Victorian ebonised ink stand with silver busby inkwell by S Smith & Son, engraved plaque to front "From Major George Luck to Sergeant Major Henry Merrick in remembrance of the years spent together in E Troop 15 The Kings Hussars", London 1878, 26cm width, 10cm height, 17cm depth; and a pair of ebony candlesticks, 13cm high. General Sir George Luck (1840-1916) was a British Army officer, commissioned into the 15th Regiment of Foot in 1858. He commanded the 15th Hussars during the Second Anglo-Afghan War between 1878 and 1880. He became Inspector-General of Cavalry in India, then Inspector-General of Cavalry in the UK and finally Commander-in-Chief, Bengal Command. He retired in 1903 and was given the colonelcy of the 15th (The King's) Hussars in 1904. He was appointed Lieutenant of the Tower in 1905 and promoted full general on 23 May 1906.

An Interesting medieval military ring - "Thumb's ring" with intricate decoration on the bezel. Such rings were often used by the archers in the Saxon army to protect their nails from the string of the bow. Superb item. - 22mm(inner diameter), 12 grams - ca. 1000 AD - Property of a London gentleman, professional collector of military artifacts; purchased in Oxford in the 1990s. - All items come with Free International postage, accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity .

GREAME FENTON (1884-1963) AS THREE TIMES WINNER OF THE FRENCH MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX, (FIRST ORGANISED IN 1906 BY THE AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF FRANCE) CULMINATING IN 1913, FENTON WAS AWARDED THE BRONZE WINGED VICTORY TROPHY (SCULPTED BY LOUIS ERNEST BARRIAS 1841-1905) OUTRIGHT, AFTER HIS FINAL WIN. FENTON RODE CLEMENT MOTORCYCLES AS ILLUSTRATED IN THE HAND COLOURED FRAMED GAMY- MONTAUT PRINT WHICH COMMEMORATES THE VICTORY (43 X 73.5 CM) TOGETHER WITH THREE GOLD MEDALS (22.2 GRAMS) AND FOUR SILVER MEDALS ALSO FORM PART OF THIS LOT. (PROVENANCE BY FAMILY REPUTE) FENTON WAS IN CHARGE OF TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE PRINCE OF WALES (LATER EDWARD VIII) AND RECEIVED AN MBE FOR HIS SERVICES. BETWEEN THE WARS WHILE LIVING IN FRANCE HE WORKED FOR HOTCHKISS MOTORCARS. A MEMBER OF THE FRENCH AUTOMOBILE CLUB HE WAS A MONTE CARLO RALLYIST FOR MANY YEARS, HE REMAINED IN FRANCE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. IMPRISIONED BY THE GERMANS, ONE OF HIS DAUGHTERS (NORA, MARRIED TO A FRENCH ARMY OFFICER) MANAGED TO PURSUADE THE GERMANS THAT FENTON WAS IRISH! HE WAS RELEASED AND TOOK ON A SENIOR ROLE WITH THE HOTCHKISS FACTORY IN SAINT DENIS, PARIS, ONLY RETURNING TO ENGLAND ON THE FACTORY'S CLOSURE IN 1956.
