British or Scandinavian school, c. 1630 Portrait of Sir John Hepburn (c. 1598-1636), founder of the Royal Scots oil on canvas 227 x 128 cm (89 1/2 x 50 1/2 in) Note: Although an attribution to Gilbert Jackson (fl. 1621-1643) was proposed some years ago, it has recently been suggested that this portrait is stylistically more likely to be the work of a Swedish or Danish artist influenced by Sir Anthony van Dyck. This would, of course, be consistent with the subject`s campaigning (see biographical note below). Provenance: acquired in the early 19th century by Anna Maria and Edmund Meysey Wigley for the rebuilt Shakenhurst Hall, Worcestershire; John Hepburn, of Athelstaneford, East Lothian, was one of the most significant Scots soldiers recruited in 1620 to support the Elector Palatine of Bohemia, Frederick V, whose wife Elizabeth was the daughter of King James VI and I. In 1623 he entered the service of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden and in 1625 became colonel of his own infantry regiment, serving with distinction in Sweden`s successful Prussian campaign. His regiment subsequently became The Royal Scots, which until its merger into the Royal Regiment of Scotland in 2006 was the British army`s oldest regiment. Hepburn had a close relationship with the Swedish king, displaying diplomatic as well as military skills and fighting alongside a number of other Scots officers. Although it is not certain that he was formally ennobled in Britain, he is said to have been knighted by Gustavus Adolphus in 1629, when King Charles I invested the Swedish king with the Order of the Garter. In the summer of 1632 a disagreement between the two led to Hepburn`s resignation from Swedish service. It seems that Hepburn may have taken exception to the king`s jibes about either his flamboyant style of dress or his Catholicism. After 1632 France formed an alliance with Sweden and since Hepburn still wanted to support the Bohemian cause he joined the army of King Louis XIII. Commissioned as a marechal de camp in 1633, the successful campaigns of le Regiment Hebron led the king to promote him to marechal de France, but he was killed at the siege of Saverne in July 1636 before being formally appointed. He is buried in Toul Cathedral.
