Exhibited at Harwich Museum, Harwich, Essex, UK, 3rd February-9th March 2024; accompanied by a copy of a photograph of the artefact on display.This beautiful Viking sword (probably a river find) shows engraved decoration in Mammen style (700-800 A.D.) and is an early type A according to the Petersen’s typology and classification. This category of swords evolved from the swords of the Vendel Period in Scandinavia, especially from the Swedish ones. Petersen originally individuated eight examples of this sword’s typology, one of the first categories of Viking swords, although these swords were also widely used in the Carolingian Empire. Circa 2nd-3rd century A.D.. With incised foliage detail to the high arched bow and flat head plate with human face and radiating floral pattern engraved on both sides; catchplate and pin-loop to the reverse. Cf. This particularly characteristic fibula shape of the Romano-Germanic army, worn probably by the Germanic mercenaries of the Roman army, appeared in the later 2nd and partly at the beginning of the 3rd century A.D., under a form of large bow brooches with various types of head plates or spiral sleeves. 3rd-4th century A.D.. Swastika-shaped fibula with horse-head decoration, each head with punched ring-and-dot eye, a similar motif to the centre. Cf. Petcu, R., ‘Swastika-shaped fibulae with horse-head decorations (Almgren 232) from the Roman period in Dobrudja (Moesia Inferior)’ in Studia Antiqua et Archaeologica, 25(1); pp.113–122, fig.4. 16.7 grams, 45 mm (1 3/4 in.). Acquired before 2000.From the collection of a European gentleman living in the UK.In the 3rd century A.D., several examples of fibulae in the shape of four horses’ heads forming a swastika (type Almgren 232) seem to be related to the creation of the Illyrian cavalry corps in Roman army. Many examples of these military fibulae were found in ancient Roman Dacia (Romania), in Roman Illyricum and Moesia. [No Reserve]

Finial from a processional or altar cross, with incised guilloche bands to the obverse and central socket for a cabochon, lobes to the angles; pierced lower arm with attachment scars to both faces. Belgium collection, 1980s.From the collection of an London antiquarian.These kind of crosses were mainly used for religious purposes. However, in 6th and 7th centuries A.D., they could be fixed at the top of the standards of the Roman Christian Army, as clearly described from the Arab sources speaking about the battle of Yarmouk. For this battle the Arab sources give a detailed description of the Roman standards, with at the top a golden cross, a golden cross tied to a silver chain, a cross with glittering jewels, a golden cross encrusted with jewels. The cross at the top of the standards, also of small dimensions like this one, is visible on miniature statuette of Roman Cavalrymen/Military Saints from Roman Egypt. [No Reserve]

Third Reich Army belt buckle, Gott mit Uns fitted on leather belt. Buckle without maker’s name and hook has been replaced by larger bar, traces of red paint to eagle and some lettering. Belt has been ornately engraved with flowers, hearts, woodland scenes etc, some cracking to leather, generally very fine.

Comprising the 1854 Crimean War medal, with four campaign bars for Sebastopol, Inkerman, Balaclava and Alma, on ribbons, marked '952 * SHOESMITH JOs Betts RA', and the Turkish Crimea medal, un-named as issued, on ribbon. The second is the campaign medal issued by Sultan Abdulmejid I of the Ottoman Empire to surviving allied military personnel involved in the Crimean War of 1854-56.
A WWII German army animal skin Walsrode rucksack. Dated 1940, with leather straps and fur covered flap. Marked in pen inside flap 'Stefan Koombes, Kommandat Stalag 13'. Stalag 13 was originally a training camp for German soldiers in WWI known as Lager Hammelburg and was later turned into a prisoner of war camp in WWI and again in WWII.
