19th century signed and titled scrimshaw panel of ships in harbour with windmill on the hill beyond, titled 'HMS Asia entering the dock', with queen's crowns and Royal coat of arms to top border and marked 'drawn by E. Mickleburgh'. Sources including records of other similar signed and titled works and a very complimentary entry in the Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists suggest the artist's name as Edward Mickelbrugh, born in Margate, England in 1814 and later Captain on a voyage from Melbourne to the United States circa 1843-5. Also known to have spent four years in the army, records indicate Mickleburgh may have been a captain active along the coast of Victoria in the early 1840s, living in Port Phillip with his wife and daughter before moving to Sydney around 1843. The Mickleburgh family apparently left Sydney for San Francisco in February 1852, returning several months later. Almost 30 years later the 1881 British Census indicates that an Edward Mickleburgh was living in the Royal Alfred Merchant Seaman's Institution, Belvedere, 67 years old and widowed. 17 x 30.5cm
* Brumby & Clarke (publishers). John Bull to Britannia - "Serve 'em right! They've whistled for the wind and got it"! circa 1905, large chromolithographic political caricature, old folds, 475 x 730 mm, framed and glazedQTY: (1)NOTE:A political poster probably issued by the Liberal Party: John Bull stands on a clifftop beside Britannia. They are watching the Tory party longboat which is near to sinking in rough seas. The waves threatening to overwhelm the vessel are labelled 'Army Reform, 'Volunteers', 'Tariff Reform', 'Education', 'Finance', 'Chinese Labour', 'Bye Elections' & 'Licensing Act'. The vessel's sail is marked 'Unionism', and is ripped and blown out. The pennant 'flag' at the top of the mast is a golf bag. The occupants of the boat have their names written on the gunnel and are identified as the Prime Minister, Arthur Balfour, together with Joseph Chamberlain, Austen Chamberlain (the Chancellor of the Exchequer), St John Broderick & H. O. Arnold-Forster. The Tory government was indeed floundering and Balfour's government was to fall to a landslide defeat in the general election of December 1905. The result is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in British political history and remains the only instance of a former Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition losing their seat in a General election.

The city was besieged by the Spanish, commanded by Louis de Bourbon, the Prince de Condé (1621-86) from 3 July to 25 August 1654, during the Franco-Spanish War (1635 - 59). The Spanish were defeated in battle on 25 August 1654 by a French relief army under the command of Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne (1611-75). This example retains the separately printed title which is pasted along the base of the image. The word 'Defaite' in this title panel is spelt with two 'F's whereas the title in the Museum of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France copy contains only one 'F'. The Museum's copy also retains the columns of letterpress text, (in French and Latin) which were pasted to the vertical margins, with a further eight columns (two blank) of text pasted along the lower border.

WW2 SAS Gen Richard O'Connor DSO MC signed1981 US Washington DC FDC. General Sir Richard Nugent O'Connor, KT, GCB, DSO and Bar, MC (21 August 1889 - 17 June 1981) was a senior British Army officer who fought in both the First and Second World Wars, and commanded the Western Desert Force in the early years of the Second World War. He eventually escaped after the fall of Mussolini in the autumn of 1943. In 1944 he commanded VIII Corps in the Battle of Normandy and later during Operation Market Garden. In 1945 he was General Officer in Command of the Eastern Command in India and then, in the closing days of British rule in the subcontinent, he headed Northern Command. Victoria Cross winner Capt Harold Ervine Andrews VC signed Evacuation from Dunkirk 50th ann WW2 cover. Set with photo and mint German wartime stamps on A4 Page with corner mounts so can easily be removed if required. For most conspicuous gallantry on active service on the night of the 31st May/1st June, 1940. Captain Ervine-Andrews took over about a thousand yards of the defences in front of Dunkirk, his line extending along the Canal de Bergues, and the enemy attacked at dawn. For over ten hours, notwithstanding intense artillery, mortar, and machine-gun fire, and in the face of vastly superior enemy forces, Captain Ervine-Andrews and his company held their position. The enemy, however, succeeded in crossing the canal on both flanks; and, owing to superior enemy forces, a company of Captain Ervine-Andrews' own battalion, which was despatched to protect his flanks, was unable to gain contact with him. There being danger of one of his platoons being driven in, he called for volunteers to fill the gap, and then, going forward, climbed on to the top of a straw-roofed barn, from which he engaged the enemy with rifle and light automatic fire, though, at the time, the enemy were sending mortar-bombs and armour piercing bullets through the roof. Captain Ervine-Andrews personally accounted for seventeen of the enemy with his rifle, and for many more with a Bren gun. Later, when the house which he held had been shattered by enemy fire and set alight, and all his ammunition had been expended, he sent back his wounded in the remaining carrier. Captain Ervine-Andrews then collected the remaining eight men of his company from this forward position, and, when almost completely surrounded, led them back to the cover afforded by the company in the rear, swimming or wading up to the chin in water for over a mile; having brought all that remained of his company safely back, he once again took up position. Throughout this action, Captain Ervine-Andrews displayed courage, tenacity, and devotion to duty, worthy of the highest traditions of the British Army, and his magnificent example imbued his own troops with the dauntless fighting spirit which he himself displayed. Walter Morison signed Tunnelling into Colditz hardback book. Bookplate fixed to title page inscribed Stalag Luft III. Flight Lieutenant Walter McDonald Morison (26 November 1919 - 26 March 2009) was a Royal Air Force pilot who became a prisoner of war and was sent to Colditz for attempting to steal an enemy aircraft during the Second World War. Morison joined the Royal Air Force at the outbreak of war in September 1939, and was trained as a pilot (he already knew how to fly a glider). He was commissioned as a pilot officer on 30 November 1940 and assigned to No. 241 Squadron, flying Westland Lysanders. He was soon transferred to a training unit as an instructor, before joining No. 103 Squadron in May 1942. On the night of 5/6 June 1942, while flying a Wellington bomber on his third mission and the first as captain, he was hit by another Wellington X3339 from 156 Squadron, piloted by Sgt Guy Chamberlin RAFVR. He was the sole survivor of the five-man crew. Coincidentally, Morison had been Chamberlin's instructor at RAF Lossiemouth around the beginning of 1942. All the crew of X3339 were killed and are buried in the same row at the Reischwald Forest War Cemetery near Kleve in Germany. He became a prisoner of war (POW) and was sent to Stalag Luft III at Sagan. He was promoted to flight lieutenant on 30 November 1942 whilst being held as a POW. On 12 June 1943, Morison and 23 or 25 others escaped from the camp during a delousing break. Twenty-two prisoners left the camp with two guards, actually two fellow POWs in bogus German uniforms. Once outside, the group split up. The others were quickly recaptured, but he and Flight Lieutenant Lorne Welch, wearing fake uniforms, walked to a nearby airfield and attempted to steal an aircraft, a Junkers W 34. They had to abandon the attempt when the rightful crew appeared to fly away the aircraft. The next day, they returned and tried to steal a biplane, but were caught and eventually sent to Oflag IV-C at Colditz. He was liberated from Colditz by the American army in April 1945. Manov, M., Torbov.N., 'Inscribed Lead Sling Bullets with the name of Alexander the Great and with other names and symbols found in Thrace' in Archaeologia Bulgarica, XX, 2, pp.29-43, fig.23, for identical; Schinco, G., Small, A.M., 'A previously unknown siege of Botromagno/Silvium: the evidence of slingshots from Gravina in Puglia (Provincia di Bari, Puglia)' in Papers of the British School at Rome, 2019, pp.1-52, fig.38. 26 grams, 31 mm (1 1/4 in.). Ex Cummings collection, UK, 1990s.Together with the Balearic slingers, Rhodian slingers were considered to be the best of the Hellenistic world, and they were also used in the Roman army. The slingshots with an image of a scorpion on one side and with an inscription ???? on the other are believed to originate from the Island of Rhodes. On these sling bullets ???? should be translated as “nice things.” Of course, ironically, these “nice things” were designed to kill enemies and to sting like a scorpion, and the message of those with the image of a scorpion could be understood, as proposed ny M. Manov and N. Torbov, as: “nice things sting like a scorpion.” [No Reserve]
3rd century A.D.. With concentric lines of openwork ornament in lanceolate shapes, ending with crescent decorations. Cf. Bishop, M.C. & Coulston, J.N.C., Roman Military Equipment from the Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome, Oxford, 2006, pls.3b and 7a, for similar. 40 grams, 86 mm (3 3/8 in.). Acquired from Gallery Gryphos, Munich, 1997.European private collection.Accompanied by an academic report by Dr Raffaele D’Amato. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.11998-211928.In the 3rd century A.D. Roman army, the old ring suspension system of the sword, of Celtic and Iberian origin, was abandoned. The sword was now mainly carried suspended from a broad baldric on the soldier’s left side. The high quality of the openwork decoration of our phalera and the precious silver of which it is made imply that it may have once belonged to a commissioned officer. 2nd century A.D.. Comprising a hollow-formed hoop with rounded shoulders, inset garnet intaglio with clasped hands and 'AIAX' inscription. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 189, for type. 2.79 grams, 21.00 mm overall, 14.90 mm internal diameter (approximate size British E, USA 2 1/4, Europe 2.41, Japan 2) (7/8 in.). Acquired in Europe in 1992.with Million Cornette de Saint Cyr, Hotel Regina, 12 December 2009.European private collection. The Romanised name 'Aiax' is given to the hero ???? of the Trojan war, who carried off the body of Achilles and fought Hector. The subject of two clasped hands (dextrarum junctio) symbolising the fides (loyalty, trust), was very popular on Roman rings and gems. It was mainly used on marriage rings, sometimes with the equivalent Greek inscription 'OMONOIA'. Sometimes it was used in terms of military loyalty between commander and army. In this case it is most probable the name of the groom (AIAX). (For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price.) Circa 1st-2nd century A.D.. Modelled in the round, standing with right leg bent, right arm raised and left extended before the body; with thick tousled hair, exaggerated torc to the neck, jacket with incised vertical lines, tight-fitting trousers and ankle-boots. Cf. Durham, E., Metal Figurines in Roman Britain, vol. 2, Reading, 2010, pl.124; Caesar (translated by S. A. Handford) The Conquest of Gaul, (1982), (Penguin Classics). 53 grams total, 67 mm (2 5/8 in.). From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000.From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent. The pose of the figure suggests that he is in the action of brandishing a weapon, or possibly holding the reins of a team of horses pulling a chariot. Caesar mentions the expert use of the war-chariot by the Britons (Conquest of Gaul, IV.33). The padded garment suggests a Celtic auxiliary in the Roman army. [No Reserve]
