[L'EVEQUE, Henry].- Campaigns of the British Army in Portugal, under the command of General The Earl of Wellington.- London: Published by W. Bulmer & Co., and published (for the proprietor) by Messrs. Colnaghi and Co., 1812.- [6], 18 p.: 1 retrato, [1], 17 gravuras; 57 cm.- E., Henry l'Évêque (1769-1832), painter, miniaturist, watercolorist and above all engraver, born in Geneva, was part of a group of artists who, following the French Revolution, roamed Europe accompanying the armies in campaign, recording for the posterity the most famous battles of the Napoleonic wars. Complete copy, consisting of a title page, a portrait of Wellington, next to the title page (To His Most Excellent Magesty the Emperor of All the Russias, this portrait of Field Marshal His Grace the Duke of Wellington..., dated 1814), two preliminary sheets (author's dedication to Wellington, and list of subscribers), one sheet with a description of the Prince Regent's departure to Brazil, in 1807, and respective engraving, 18 text pages (numbered) with descriptions of the 17 engravings found at the end of the volume. The 17 large-format (41x57 cm) copperplate prints (numbered) represent scenes of battles and troop movements during the Peninsular War. Prints with very slight browning, almost always confined to the margins, preserving the cellophane separators. Recent binding, fully shagreen (probably from the Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva Foundation Workshops), with gilt ornamental borders, closed panels on the spine and roll on the squares; protective case. Duarte de Sousa, 139.

LANDMANN, George.- Historical, military and picturesque observations on Portugal, illustrated by seventy-five coloured plates, including authentic plans of the sieges and battles fought in the Peninsula during the late war.- London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1818.- 2 vols.: il.; 37 cm.- E., The author (1779-1854) was a lieutenant colonel in the British Army, with equal military rank in the Spanish Engineering Corps. The first volume aims to provide an overview of the history of Portugal, while the second seeks to convey a wide range of local information that may be useful, on the one hand, for military purposes, and on the other, to travelers and other readers. . The edition can be considered as one of the largest typographic companies, in its style and one of the most beautiful books in the foreign bibliography on Portugal, in the 19th century. The first volume (XIV, 607 p.) is illustrated with four hand-coloured watercolours, representing as many degrees of torture by the Inquisition, two numismatic engravings and 14 watercolour maps and plans of cities and troop movements. The second volume (XVI, 203 p.) includes another 55 beautiful aquatints from Portuguese localities, as well as a double engraving of Alcácer do Sal, not registered in the index, but referred to by Tooley as nº 25. All engravings are hand-coloured and of great aesthetic effect, some being doubles. In general, they are all very clean, fresh and neatly folded. A few pages of text with very slight moisture stains not affecting the engravings. Contemporary green morocco half-bindings with covers covered with a canvas similar to the spine and new endpapers. The copies rarely appear on the market, especially when complete like this one. Provenance: lot 353, from Silva's/Pedro de Azevedo auction, April 1993; lot 432 of the Silva’s/Pedro de Azevedo auction, March 2000, (same copy). Tooley, 291 (The most beautiful illustrated book on Portugal of the period). Duarte de Sousa, 398.

Lot 11

Circa 100-300 AD A beautiful bronze bust of the Roman god of war Mars, wearing a domed helmet which would originally have had a high plumed crest. This elaborate helmet was known as the galea and was commonly given a crest like the one, often made of bird feathers or horsehair, which not only served to intimidate, but also to distinguish different ranks within the Roman military and as a key component the traditional iconographic program of Mars. He is depicted with locks of curls which adorn his chin in the form of a beard and moustache, framing his pursed lips, flat nose, and wide round eyes. Imbued in a verdant hued patina evocative of the ancient world, this intricately detailed bust is a stunning example from Imperial Rome. Mars (Greek Ares) was the god of war - son to Jupiter and Juno (Greek Zeus and Hera) and one of the Twelve Olympians. His sister Minerva (Greek Athena) was the goddess of war. Whereas Mars/Ares traditionally represents the fiery, violent aspects of combat, his sister Minerva/Athena usually represents intellectual military strategy. Second in importance only to Jupiter, Mars was highly regarded as the chief military god of the Roman army. For similar style of bust see: The British Museum: Accession number: 1871,0601. Size: L:101mm (with stand) / W:35mm; 260g Provenance: Property of a London Ancient Art Gallery; formerly in the famous Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister; acquired between early 1960s to 1990s.

Lot 296

Circa 200-300 ADA beautifully formed iron-short sword with a ring pommel, with a broad handle, a double-edged blade featuring a shallow midrip along both faces as well as a pointed tapering top. A slender rectangular guard creates a buffer between the blade shoulder and the soldier's hand. Originally introduced by the Sarmatians and the Germans to the Romans legions and used by the Roman infantry in the 2nd century CE.The army of ancient Rome (800 BC - AD 476) was a formidable fighting power. It was exceptionally well disciplined, organised and supplied with a huge selection of effective and battle-proven weapons. The sword and spear were the infantryman's s main weapons, and the spectacular military successes of the Roman legions throughout Europe and the Middle East lay in the disciplined battlefield application and relentless training in the use of these weapons.Cf: "Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier: From Marius to Commodus, 112 BC - AD 192" by Graham Summer, Raffaele D'Amato, 2009, pg. 88, fig. 81.For similar see:The British Museum. Accession no. 2004,0301.1. Size: L:563mm / W:60mm; 385g Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK / International art markets.

Lot 298

Circa 100 BCCast iron, the handle formed of two sections, held together by joints inserted into discs at the centre and pommel, the blade of tapering form with median midrib, the scabbard of "frame-type" with one open side and the other decorated with double-spiral motifs and openwork panels. A remarkable survival, this shortarm dagger is of Iberian construction, but the shape later became more famous as the Roman pugio, the standard issue legionnaires sidearm. It was when campaigning against the Celtiberians in the first century BC that the Roman form first came into widespread use, suggesting the Roman army appreciated the strengths of the native weapon. Interestingly the decorative square and teardrop shaped cavities on the sheath of the present example have been patched with metal in ancient times. Perhaps to better guard the iron blade from the effects of wet weather. Size: Set of 2: L:210 - 307mm / W:53 - 54mm; 255g Provenance: Private UK collection; formerly with Axel Guttman, Germany.

1996 Harley Davidson MT350, 349cc. Registration number P871 HRM. Frame number 1HD6RLT14VY000290. Engine number 237931.The MT350 motorcycle was built in the USA starting in 1993 and was derived from the earlier Armstrong MT500 built for the British army. In 1984 Armstrong-CCM then bought the rights to the Rotax engined XN Tornado from the Milan based SWM company after they had gone into liquidation. From this they developed the Armstrong MT500 and then produced about 3,500 of the bikes for the British Army between 1984 and 1987. In 1987, after the MT500 had been adopted as the standard motorcycle for NATO, Armstrong sold the rights to Harley Davidson who took over production in the United States where they produced the Harley Davidson badged MT350 version of the motorcycle. The British Army began buying this version in 1993.The MT350 uses an electric start version of the Austrian built Rotax 348cc single cylinder, 4-valve overhead camshaft engine producing 30 bhp and 29 Nm of torque. Although slightly heavy at 162 kg for off-road use, it is a robust motorbike and is fitted with good quality Marzocchi front forks and Ohlin rear shock absorbers. The wheel rims were made by Akront, hubs and discs. bearings. The MT350 is fitted with detachable plastic pannier boxes mounted on frames either side of the engine. It is also fitted with a plastic rifle scabbard at the back on the right-hand side. This example saw service with 174 PRO COY Royal Military Police and 157 RLC-249 Sqn being retired in 2009 and sold by Witham Ltd, the military specialists. It was in a sorry state and our vendor set about a full restoration, the engine and gearbox were stripped and rebuilt, as was the carb, the frame was repainted, all bearings and seals replaced, a long list is included with the sale. The bike is now fully running and ready for green adventures. It is only being sold as another project has appeared.Sold with the V5C.
