Registration - 15BF69 Chassis No. - WNI11569 M.O.T. - Exempt Odometer - 29,432 This characterful and highly-original Champ first rolled off the Austin Longbridge production line in 1956, before being accepted by the Army’s receiving depot at Church Broughton and issued with Army registration ‘15BF69’, entering service on 8th March 1956. The Austin Champ is presented in original military livery, with green bodywork, seat frames, and hood struts, as well as exterior-mounted spade and pick-axe. A ‘FFW’ (Fitted For Wireless) Champ, the Austin was specified by the Army to be fitted with a two-speed generator and extra wiring, to enable the mounting of a radio set. Struck off the Army census in 1967, it has been dry-stored for many years by the vendor, and this barn-find is also offered with both a trailer, and a new-old stock crate Rolls-Royce B40 engine. Bearing chassis-number WN1-11569, the Champ currently shows 29,432 miles on the odometer, and has not been registered for use outside of military service before. The vendor presently classes the bodywork and running gear as ‘below average’, though the crate engine as ‘excellent’. What will surely be a very rewarding project, this Austin Champ offers the perfect chance to obtain an alternative to the more common Jeeps and Land Rovers as a ‘go-anywhere’ military classic. Inspired by the ubiquitous American Jeep, the Champ was a British military vehicle designed immediately post WWII and manufactured from 1951 to 1956, at which point it was supplanted by the cheaper Land Rover. The lightweight 4x4 was powered by an Austin-built Rolls-Royce-designed four-cylinder petrol engine of 2838cc. Ultimately only 11,732 of the contracted 15,000 Champs were produced, all of which had been moved from front line army service to the territorial Army by the mid ‘60s, and were then sold into the private domain from 1968. Though their service life was curtailed by cost, they boasted impressive cross-country capabilities and could even touch 50mph in reverse – something neither the Jeep nor Land Rover could match. In summary: An ideal project, the Champ hasn’t been registered since leaving the Army books in 1967 Comes with a trailer, and new-old crate Rolls-Royce B40 engine Currently displaying a total mileage of 29,432
Stag handle; large blade, pen blade, corkscrew, awl, hook. Unspoiled monogram plate. George Wostenholm as a maker of fine cutlery goes back to the early 1700's- by 1751, son Henry had petitioned the Company of Cutlers guild for the use of the term Spring Knife- and so, the modern spring locker folding pocket knife was born. Wostenholm made a name for itself in the 1800's through innovation and quality- their folding utility and hunting knives would be the model by which many others, including the Swiss Army Knife would be judged- and their American bowie knives (George Wostenholm the third was very fond of America and its need for excellent frontier steel) were revered. Three such bowies, turned into works of art by designer Alfred Stevens, would be exhibited to acclaim at the Great London Exhibition of 1851. Wostenholm folding knives could be found on the frontiers of Asia and Antarctica, the battlefields of America, and the pockets of officers and gentleman alike during WW1- and they are still one of Europe's most respected makers of fine cutlery. This unique variant of the usual farrier's knife features a long handle with a stout, distally tapered main spade-point blade, flanked by a small fold out cross cut saw and gut or twinning hook. On the backside, a stout triangular awl, flat-coil corkscrew, and small tapering pen blade is present. Cross jumping on the back tools offers a comfortable grip for the thumb. The lock up on the main blade is nice and tight. German silver hardware, all tooling mirror polished. Stag handle, brass liners. Both blades read, IXL George Wostenholm Sheffield England, at ricasso. A monogram plate is present, but has not been previously engraved. Artist: G. WostenholmDimensions: 5.75"L x 0.75"D x 1.25"HCountry of Origin: England, SheffieldCondition: Age related wear.

I enclose a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's "Protracted War" with his signature written on the side of the cover. I am sure that this signed book will be a rare acquisition on your part, and I can assure you that the seven guineas will be put to good use in promoting Anglo-Chinese friendship. Yours sincerely, Jack Woddis”. Notes:Mao Zedong / Tse-tung, also known as Chairman Mao, was the Communist revolutionary founder of the People’s Republic of China, which he led as chairman of the Chinese Communist Party from 1949 until his death in 1976. During the early part of the Chinese Civil War (begun in 1927), Mao was appointed commander-in-chief of the Red Army and developed guerrilla tactics influenced by the works of ancient military strategists such as Sun Tzu. After the Manchurian Incident of 1931 and full-blown Japanese invasion in 1937, Mao’s troops allied with their former enemies to form a united front against the Japanese. From his base in Yan'an, Mao authored several texts for his troops, including Philosophy of Revolution, which offered an introduction to the Marxist theory of knowledge; Protracted Warfare (this volume), which dealt with guerrilla and mobile military tactics; and On New Democracy, which laid forward ideas for China's future.Jack Woddis (1914-1980) was the British-born son of Polish Jewish emigree who had fled the pogroms of the Imperial Russian Empire. He joined the Communist Party Hendon branch in 1937 and went on to write extensively about neo-colonialism and internationalism. He worked as secretary of the Communist Party’s International Department for many years as well as being a member of the executive and various political committees. The volume was purchased by the vendor’s grandfather, who is described by them as having had very “left-wing sympathies”. It has stayed in the family since the original purchase in 1950, and was only re-discovered amongst other papers recently after the vendor’s father passed away.Refer to department for guide price
