Lt Hippisley was born in Wells in 1890 and educated at King's School, Bruton and the Royal Agricultural College Cirencester where he was a gold medallist. He went to France on the 13/8/1914 and was present at Mons, Aisne and Marne. He was killed in action on the 23/10/1914 when his platoon successfully held an exposed trench against a large German force but lost three fifths of its strength
