Benjamin Samuel Bolomey (Swiss, 1739-1819) Portrait of William V of Orange (1748-1806); and Portrait of Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina of Prussia, Princess of Orange (1751-1820), his wife oil on canvas 118 x 90cm (46.02 x 35.1in) a pair (2) Provenance: Brigadier General Ballard, of Hadham Mill, Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, by the late 19th Century, and by descent in a Hertfordshire country house Literature: Benjamin Samuel Bolomey, 1739-1819: un peintre Suisse a la Cour du Prince Guillaume V d’Orange, ed. Laurent Golay et al (Zwolle, 2001) in which there are several portraits of William V, generally showing him wearing the Garter (which he was awarded at the age of four!) and one or two of Princess Wilhelmina. Most are dated between 1769 and 1774 These exquisitely beautiful and rare portraits of William V of Orange and his consort have been in an English country house for the past 100 years. They are datable to circa 1770 on the basis of similarities in composition and dress to a pair of full length paintings of the same sitters in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. William V is wearing the Garter Star and Little George and Princess Wilhelmina is wearing the Order of St Anna, a Russian Order. Bolomey was a painter, illustrator and engraver, born in Lausanne on May 19th 1739. He studied in Paris from 1748 at the Academie Royale de peinture under the guidance of Joseph Marie Vien. He was also influenced by Francois Boucher (1703-1770) and Maurice-Quentin de la Tour (1704-1788). Boucher’s delicate rococo sensuality and de la Tour’s sensitive attention to both physiognomy and character are amply reflected in Bolomey’s own portrait works. Bolomey worked in The Hague from 1762-91 where he became official portraitist to William V, whom he painted more than twenty times; he was also director of the Academy Pictura. From there, he went to Paris before returning to Lausanne in 1792, where he died in 1819. One of his pupils in the Netherlands was Jean-Georges Teissier (1750-1821). William V (1748-1806) also known as Willem V of Orange was the last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic and he presided over the republic’s terminal decline. He assumed the position of Stadtholder (chief executive and military commander) in 1766 after a long regency first by his mother and then by the Duke of Brunswick following the death of his father Wilhelm IV in 1751 when he was only three years old. In 1767 William married Princess Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina of Prussia (1751-1820), a niece of Frederick the Great and sister of the later King Frederick William II, henceforth known as Wilhelmina of Prussia, Princess of Orange. His court became a significant musical centre and he was also one of the most important art collectors of his age. His political career was less fortunate. Dutch support for the cause of the American colonies was driven by hopes of a profitable Atlantic trade but led in fact to war with England in 1780. The ignominious defeat of the Dutch in 1784 prompted the development of domestic opposition and in 1787 a group of young Patriots challenged William’s rule. In response to demands for William’s abdication, his wife called on her brother to send Prussian troops who suppressed the Patriots. Princess Frederika was feted as the saviour and true ruler of the Dutch Republic but in 1795 the Patriots returned in the wake of the invading French revolutionary army. William and Frederika fled into exile in England. After 1795 William and his consort lived variously at Hampton Court (until November 1801), Nassau, Brunswick or Oranienburg. William died at Brunswick in 1806, the same year that the Dutch Republic was transformed into a monarchy under King Louis Napoleon. Princess Wilhelmina remained in Germany but lived to see her son crowned King William I of the Netherlands in 1813. In 1814 she settled in the Netherlands again and died at Het Loo in 1820 We are grateful to Dr Joachim Whaley for his help with the catalogue entry
Attributed to Theodore Russell (British, 1614-1689) Portrait of Honora de Burgh, 1st Duchess of Berwick (1675-1698), wearing Pearls oil on canvas 34 x 27cm (13.26 x 10.53in) Provenance: From a Norfolk country house On the basis of a label on the reverse reading ‘Lady Berrick’ and of the similarity of this portrait with other authenticated likenesses, the painting is believed to be a portrait of Honora de Burgh, dowager Countess of Lucan and Duchess of Berwick. Honora de Burgh (also de Burgo, Burke or Bourke) was one of the most enchanting yet tragic figures associated with the early Jacobite cause. She was born in 1675 at Portumna Castle, County Galway, the youngest daughter of William Burke, the seventh Earl of Clanricarde. In 1689 she married Patrick Sarsfield (circa 1660-1693), one of James II’s military commanders in Ireland who was created the 1st Earl of Lucan in 1691, at Portumna Abbey, when she was only fifteen years old, almost twenty years younger than her husband. Following the defeat of James II’s forces at the Battle of the Boyne in July 1690, Honora fled her home at Lucan in County Dublin and eventually settled with her husband at the Jacobite court in exile at St Germain-en-Laye outside Paris. Now aged nineteen she threw herself into the social life of the courts of James II and Louis IV. She was reckoned among the most fashionable and beautiful women of her time and is said to have introduced the French court to ‘les contredanses Anglais’. Saint-Simon recalled: ‘Elle etait a la premiere fleur de son age, belle, touchante, faite a peindre, une nymphe’. Her husband’s death in battle in 1693 left her widowed with a young son. Two years later she married the young James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick (1670-1734), the eldest of James II’s illegitimate sons by Arabella Churchill, and the commander of the French force in the fighting in which Sarsfield had perished. FitzJames had been created Duke in 1687, served his father at the siege of Londonderry, the Battle of the Boyne and then fought in the French army against England, as a result of which he forfeited his titles in 1695. Honora bore him one son but shortly afterwards became ill following a miscarriage. She was taken to Pezenas in Languedoc in the hope that the milder air might cure her consumption but died there aged twenty-three in 1698 after only four years of marriage. She was buried in the English convent at Pontoise; her heartbroken husband had her heart preserved in a silver box and interred at Pezenas. Her elder son James Francis Edward Sarsfield, 2nd Earl of Lucan (1693-1719), served in both the French and Spanish armies; he died unmarried in St Omer aged twenty-six. Her younger son was James Francis FitzJames Stuart (1696-1738), or Jacobo Francisco FitzJames Stuart, and succeeded his father as 2nd Duke of Berwick (albeit never recognised as such), 2nd Duque de Liria, 2nd Duque de Xerica, but lived his entire life in exile. Further portraits of her are reproduced in Charles Petrie, Marshal Duke of Berwick (London, 1953), from an original in the British Museum, and in Piers Wauchope, Patrick Sarsfield and the Williamite war (Blackrock, 1992), from an original in Kilkenny Castle We are grateful to Dr Joachim Whaley for his help with the catalogue entry

CRIMEAN WAR RELIC THE BRASS SWORD SCABBARD OF MAJOR-GENERAL CHARLES ASHE WINDHAM, `THE HERO OF THE REDAN` for a Mameluke-hilted sword, in the original green velvet lined and fitted mahogany case with brass handle and escutcheon engraved with armorials and inscribed MAJOR GENERAL C A WINDHAM, 103cm l, mid 19th c Provenance: General Charles Ashe Windham, KCB (1810-1870) of the Coldstream Guards. A portrait of Windham, sword in hand, standing before the Redan, by Charles Cousens (c1821-1889) is in the National Army Museum. In noticing his death The Times recounted Windham`s moment of glory: "General Windham was the first to enter the stronghold, and amid the shower of bullets and cannon balls that flew around him he seemed to bear about him a charmed life. At length, finding it hopeless to obtain support by sending messengers, he coolly walked across the open space before the ramparts in the midst of a well sustained fire, to demand assistance in person . The "Royals" were then placed at his disposal; but no sooner were they pit in formation than the men in the Redan were obliged to abandon the work. The opportunity had been lost. The correspondents of the press were not slow in recording the heroic bravery of Windham on this occasion, and on the arrival of General Codrington`s despatches at the Horse Guards, the subject of this memoir was rewarded by promotion to the rank of Major-General, for his distinguished conduct in having, with the greatest intrepity and coolness, headed the column of attack with assaulted the enemy`s defences on the 8th of September 1855".
