Four training grenades; These four hand grades were used by the Hitchin (Hertfordshire) Home Guard unit for training during the war, given to the vendor by the widow of Guy Symonds who was an officer, probably the commanding officer of the detachment, the grenades cover the general range the British Army was using at the time, with the Bakelite bodied No 69, the No 5 Mills as a standard grenade, the No 36 Mills with the base screw for an attachment to be fired from a rifle and the simple cast iron pattern for throwing practice

Lieutenant Colonel Charles Paston Crane DSO OBE (1857-1939) was an RIC officer, magistrate, army officer and local politician. Serving extensively in Ireland, his memoirs cover the events of the Land League, Home Rule, the War of Independence and the Irish Free State.

1913 (December 4) Royal Proclamation prohibiting the importation of arms into Ireland, letterpress printed by Eyre and Spottiswode Ltd. London. 23" x 17½" (58 x 44cm) framed. Proclaimed in the aftermath of the Dublin Lockout, the foundation of the Irish Citizen Army on 19 November and of the Irish Volunteers on 25 November.
1916 Rising pair to Volunteer Francis O'Flanagan, Four Courts garrison. A 1916 Rising Service Medal privately engraved 'Francis O'Flanagan - C Coy 1st B. D.B. - Four Courts' and a 1917-21 War of Independence Medal, with Comhrach bar privately engraved 'Francis O'Flanagan - C Coy & H Coy 1st Battn. - D.B. - Four Courts'. Francis O'Flanagan fought at Church Street Bridge and the Four Courts and was interned until August 1916. During the War of Independence he served with the IRA as a Company Sergeant and took part in the attack on British forces at Monk's Bakery in Dublin in September 1920 and mobilised for aborted attempt to rescue Kevin Barry on the 31st of October 1920. Arrested in November 1920 he was interned until December 1921. He took the Anti-Treaty side in the Civil War and at the outbreak of the Civil War in June 1922 he took part in fighting against National Army forces in Dublin. Arrested in August 1922 he was interned until June 1923.
