FOUR WW2 DIARIES 1941-1944. Four Second World War Diaries, the diaries cover every day from January 1st 1941 to 31st December 1944, the 1941 and 1942 diaries are completely hand written, each daily entry starts with the prevailing weather conditions followed by domestic and local news, ongoing medical conditions and chores done, this is followed by war news, air raids on UK, air raids against Germany, campaign in North Africa etc, the diary covering 1943 changes on 4th May, from that date hand written entries on the weather and domestic activities are accompanied by newspaper cuttings covering the war news, it appears the author had been copying the newspaper entries in the earlier diaries, although not named the author was a member of the Home Guard in the village or area of Rollesby in Norfolk, and celebrated his 79th birthday in January 1943, the diaries give a blow by blow account of every event in WW2, from the sinking of the Bismarck, fall of Tobruk and Singapore, German invasion of Greece, Crete, and Russia, entry of the United States into the war, raids on Bruneval and Dieepe, the Allied victory in North Africa, Stalingrad, D-Day, etc, interestingly the war news is quite candid at times with British and Allied losses detailed as well as German, also interesting is the fact the author offers no opinion on the progress of the war with more detail given to what had been planted his garden, still fascinating to read, the entries on the German advance to Stalingrad in 1942 and eventual defeat there in February 1943 is quite gripping, the entries on the Home Guard, while brief, are also quite illuminating, lectures on various weapons, filling sandbags at Rollesby Bridge, turning up at meetings only to find no one else was attending, and having to give his rifle over to a new recruit as he was now attached to the Staff, shades of Dads Army, an interesting historical collection, (4).
