** William Etty R.A. (1787-1849) Captain Mario, oil on board, 33 x 25.5 cm (13 x 10 in) Provenance: The Henry Burton Collection, sold 12th July 1890 as Head of a soldier for 13 gns to James Bayliss; The James Bayliss Collection, sold 22nd March 1897 as Captain of the Guard: A portrait of Signor Mario for 6 gns to Cook; The Thomas Gabriel Collection, by descent to Mrs E.M. Gabriel; with Thos. Agnew Sons, London; The William E. Fischelis Collection, Philadelphia. Exhibited: Society of Arts, 1849, William Etty Retrospective Exhibition, No. XX, described as painted in 1845. Literature: Dennis Farr, ‘William Etty’, 1958, Pg. 161, No. 123. Captain Signor Mario (October 18th,1810-December 11th, 1883) was an Italian opera singer, considered to be the most famous tenor of the 19th century. His real name and hereditary title was cavaliere nobile (“noble knight”) Don Giovanni Matteo de Candia. Born in Cagliari, he came from a noble family which belonged to Sardinia’s social elite. His family formed part of the Royal Court of Turin and his father was an army general. In order to free himself from the burdensome ancestral traditions which he had inherited, and mitigate his father’s opposition to a member of the high-born De Candia family pursuing a ‘lowly’ musical career, the young singer disguised his aristocratic origins by adopting the stage name of “Mario”, when aged in his 20s. Mario’s decision to become a professional singer was the result of accidental circumstances, however. While serving as an officer of the King of Sardinia’s Guards, he had been imprisoned at Cagliari for a trifling offence. When his period of confinement was over, he resigned his commission and went to Paris in the company of a ballerina, with whom he had eloped. He took singing lessons from two teachers, Ponchard and Marco Bordogni, and his success as an amateur vocalist led to the offer of an engagement with the Opéra. He made his debut there in 1838, as the hero of Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable. Mario’s success was immediate and complete but he did not stay long at the Paris Opéra. In 1839, he joined the Thé?tre Italien, which included on its roster of artists such celebrated singers as Maria Malibran, Henriette Sontag, Fanny Tacchinardi Persiani, Giulia Grisi, Giovanni Battista Rubini, Antonio Tamburini and Luigi Lablache. His initial appearance with this company was in the role of Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. London heard him for the first time during the course of that same year. The acclaim he achieved in Italian opera surpassed even that which he had won in French opera, and he soon acquired a Europe-wide reputation. He had a handsome face and a graceful figure, and his lyrical voice, though less powerful than that of his virtuoso tenor rival Rubini, or the baritone Tamburini, possessed a beguiling velvety softness that made it unique. Mario created few operatic parts, that of Ernesto in Don Pasquale (1843) being perhaps the only one deserving of mention. Among the most successful of his other parts were Otello in Rossini’s opera of that name, Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia, Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Fernando in La favorite, the Duke in Rigoletto and Manrico in Il trovatore. The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, was the scene of many of his stage triumphs. He sang there in 1847-1867 and again during 1871, which would prove to be his last operatic season in London. He also made occasional appearances in England in oratorio, singing for example at the Birmingham Festival of 1849 and at the Hereford Festival of 1855. He undertook various concert tours in the United Kingdom, but his name is principally associated with triumphs in the theatre. Around 1849 he acquired the “Villa Salviati” in Florence and made it his home in Italy. Here he played host to many “grandi” art figures and, of course, members the European nobility. In 1854, he toured America. Two years later he married, in London, Giulia Grisi, the famous soprano, who had links to the patrician Colonna family and the Royal Houses of Greece and Russia. He and Grisi had five daughters and a son. One of his daughters was the writer Cecilia Maria de Candia, who married Godfrey Pearce. Mario bade farewell on the stage in 1871. His decision to retire followed the loss of his wife, who had died in Berlin a few years earlier while returning from engagements in Russia. Mario ended his singing career at the imperial Russian opera house in St Petersburg. During this time, his daughters were put under the care of tutors assigned by their Godmother, the Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaievna, Duchess of Leuchtenberg and president of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Mario returned to Italy and spent his last years composing music and writing; but he never fully recovered from the death of his spouse. A benefit concert was mounted for him in London in 1880. He died in Rome three years later in difficult financial circumstances.

John Thomas Serres (1759-1825 London) The Blowing up of the French Commander’s ship L’Orient at the Battle of the Nile, oil on canvas, 90 x 135 cm (35.5 x 49 in) Exhibited: British Institution, 1825. Provenance: Donnington Castle House, Donnington, Newbury. The so-called Battle of the Nile was fought in Aboukir Bay, about 15 miles west of Alexandria, on 1st August 1798. Nelson, having spent most of the summer cruising the Eastern Mediterranean looking for Admiral Brueys’ Toulon fleet, finally came upon it as it lay at anchor in Aboukir Bay following the disembarkation of the army with which Napoleon was to conquer Egypt. Brueys had chosen a strong position in a well-protected anchorage although Nelson had the advantage of surprise. More significantly, it was already six o’clock in the evening when Nelson sighted the French and, with only two hours of daylight remaining, Brueys was confident that any attack would have to be postponed until the next day, by which time his own fleet would be ready. Nelson, with typical daring, amazed both his own captains as well as the French by ordering his ships into the Bay where they engaged the enemy in a spirited action which lasted almost through the night. The decisive moment came just after 10 o’clock when the French flagship, the huge 120-gun L’Orient, blew up with a tremendous explosion and, when dawn broke, the French annihilation became apparent with nine of their badly damaged ships captured and another four destroyed. It was a glorious victory for Nelson, one of the greatest in British naval history, and the one which brought him to the pinnacle of his career.

Napoleon I (Emperor of France 1p. in French, 4to, St. Cloud, [Paris], 14th April 1812, charging him to organise Italy in his absence as he did during his last campaign, leaving Melzi [Francesco Melzi d`Eril, 1753-1816] to preside over the ministers, and by taking every measure that seems appropriate, asking him to consolidate his dispositions for May and June and to come to Paris as soon as possible where he will remain for three or four days and after discussing the position Napoleon will take definitive measures for Italy, and from there the younger Napoleon will proceed swiftly to Glogau to rejoin the army, folds, slightly foxed and browned; and a portrait of Napoleon I, both framed and glazed.

John (King of England, 1199-1216) with the witnesses named in the document as the Bishops of Ely, Bath, Bayeux and Lisieux, William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, Roger de Thoen and Richard Humez, manuscript charter in Latin, written in a fine early gothic documentary cursive hand with elaborately flourished ascenders and descenders, on vellum, in dark brown ink, single membrane, 14 lines, c. 195 x 192mm, irregularly cut at head and clipping of the heads of the text for indenting (indenture enabling the two copies of the document to be fitted together as proof of authenticity), small inverted V cut from foot where seal was suspended (thus showing it to be the original), small easily repaired tear in blank area at foot, fine fresh condition, formerly folded into a small packet, evidence of creasing, contemporary endorsement "Regis John...", given at Caen, France, 6 July 1 John [1199] ***Twelfth-century royal charters in fine condition are becoming increasingly rare. Authorised within three months of John`s accession to the throne. Having been crowned King of England at the end of May 1199, King John arrived in Normandy in late June with a considerable army to enforce his claims to the French part of his inheritance and shortly afterwards secured the first of a series of unsteady truces with King Philip of France. The monastic foundation whose rights are the subject of the present charter is probably the Cistercian Abbey at le Valassse or le Voeu near Bolbec in the diocese of Rouen, whose church had been consecrated in 1811 by Henry, Bishop of Bayeux, one of the witnesses to this charter. A possible alternative foundation is the Augustinian Abbey at Cherbourg, founded in the mid twelfth century, which was also known as Notre-Dame du Voeu. Hubert Walter (d. 1205),justiciar, chancellor and archbishop of Canterbury, named herein as Chancellor, had been appointed to that office on 27 May 1199, five weeks before the date of this document. Walter had been a faithful servant of Richard I in the Holy Land (as bishop of Salisbury) and was the first to find him in captivity. A key player in the negotiations for Richard`s release Walter was made Archbishop of Canterbury at Richard`s behest, helped to end John`s rebellion and vigorously re-established the royal authority by the use of judicial visitations throughout the country. In 1198 Walter resigned as justiciar and after the king`s death was a prominent advocate of John`s acceeding to the throne. Walter crowned John king on 27 May 1199 and was appointed chancellor on the same day. William Marshal (c. 1146-1219), fourth earl of Pembroke; called the "Marshal"; a close collaborator of Hubert Walter and probably the best known knight in English medieval history..

Shepard (Ernest H., painter and illustrator numerous pp., v.s., v.d., Woodmancote, Lodsworth, West Sussex, 29th March 1956 - 28th November 1969 & some undated, on various subjects, including, on illustrating, "I have had a nice offer from G. Bell (publishers of Pepys etc) which is giving me some concern. It is to illustrate a book of old French fairy stories by Lancelyn Green... though I doubt for any profit... . I do hope your drawings are going better than mine - I think a thing looks right when I knock off in the evening & then, next morning, it looks horrible and I want to begin all over again", an allusion to Christopher Robin, "... I am trying to work out for Punch, for Badgers are partial to bulbs and Brock the badger is a leading character. They are quite enthusiastic about it at Punch and now the difficult part will be to keep the story going along, with new adventures. A boy an everyday boy not like C. Robin, goes ahead with Brock. The trouble is I have to make sure of being 4 weeks in hand", The Wind in the Willows, "I am getting much enjoyment from making the coloured drawings for `Wind in the Willows`. Did I tell you they are going to do a larger 21/s- Edition in the autumn... . It is rather a nuisance for Scribners have sent back my design for the colour jacket for `Wind in the Willows` as it is quite the wrong size - It was their fault as they gave me the size of the book & never said that the thing was to be a panel with their own type of lettering above. However I hope I may do a better one, now that I know I have till mid September. Yesterday afternoon Norah and I went out to look for a nice Willow tree, not too easy to find round here and we went Miles, then at Selham, which is only two miles away on the way home I found one by the Rother, quite a nice one, not pollarded, but good enough", his autobiography, "I have now started on the drawings for my book and find that easier than the writing. It is rather startling to find what a lot I can remember, I suppose that, by drawing everything as I did, events & people & places got fixed at the back of my mind... . I have written to John Betjeman to ask him to review it when the time comes" and the launch, "The Army and Navy Stores are really putting their backs into publicity & being most helpful including a window display of `Wind in Willows` drawings borrowed from Methuens", reminiscences about his childhood home in Kent Terrace, London, "The outside is exactly as it was even down to the lamp post in front... we tried to get inside but it was empty & locked up... it was Crown property & we should get permission... this was not good enough, so, remembering what I used to do when I was 7, I led them round to the mews at the back where the garden door was not locked. Then we got in through the back door... the place has been empty for over 10 years... some of the floors have even fallen in but we got up to the top and I fear that I got a lump in my throat - so many things still there - banisters, doors etc even the little niche behind the front door...", Baynes`s work, "... you showed me some rough sketches for your Arabian Nights and among them, was one of the nativity. I fell in love with it and asked if I might be allowed to buy it..."an amusing account of a visit by two of Pauline Baynes`s aunts, "I have tried to point out to them the inadequacy of your accommodation & the difficulty of supplying meals. I have not the least doubt that you will be expected to provide transport for this invasion. Besides numerous suitcases they have two enormous trunks, so nothing short of a bus would suffice. The two women bicker about the house all day, so it is difficult to see how you will be able to work"; and a small quantity of other items including a photograph of Shepard, a photocopy of a letter from Shephard to Baynes and newspaper cuttings of obituaries, folds.
