1942 Ford Jeep (GPW) Transmission: manualMileage:1849The Willys MB U.S. Army Jeep and the Ford GPW Jeep were manufactured from 1941 to 1945. These small four-wheel drive utility vehicles are considered the iconic World War II Jeep and inspired many similar light utility vehicles. With America enduring difficult economic times, the U.S. Army instigated a program to modernise its fleet with a 'general purpose, personnel or cargo carrier' especially adaptable for reconnaissance or command and designated as a ¼-tonne, 4x4 truck. Ford Motor Company, American Bantam Car Company and Willys-Overland Motors all competed for the government contract and American Bantam were the initial winners of the bid. However, the U.S. government were keen on standardisation and Willys' production capacity eventually won them the contract. Towards the end of 1941, Willys' facilities couldn't keep up with demand so Ford were contracted to produce the Jeep under licence in addition through to the end of World War II. From 1942-45, Willys produced over 360,000 Jeeps and parts used on Willys' MB Jeeps and Ford GPW Jeeps are completely interchangeable mechanically. This is a truly fantastic opportunity to own an outstanding piece of World War II history. This vehicle was purchased by the previous owner in 2009, he was an ex-British Touring Car Championship driver as well as being a very skilled engineer in his own right and bought the car as a restoration project. He set about lovingly restoring the jeep to the fabulous condition you see today, costing a fortune as this was to be for him to personally enjoy. There are invoices showing a total of circa £11,000 was spent on spares alone, yet the considerable amount of man hours lavished on this Jeep were not accounted for! If this had been calculated, we estimate that this would run into tens of thousands, maybe up to £50,000 (estimate only). Presented in the traditional and immediately recognisable Military Green, every aspect of this Jeep is superb. As part of the restoration, the engine was rebuilt, refurbishing many parts and replacing others including pistons and rods. The gearbox was also rebuilt with new bearing and ancillaries, a new clutch and transfer box. Both the front and rear axle were also restored, in addition to new brakes and master cylinder fitted and all new wiring looms and brake pipes reconfigure. There is a substantial history file containing build information, a photographed timeline of the restoration of which there are 44 photos. This Jeep was inspected by the respected and renown organisation NLBA, which is the Invicta Military Preservation Society based at Royal Air Force Base, Hendon who confirmed that this is a genuine Ford GPW Jeep with the chassis number 22376 and indeed manufactured in April 1942 (confirmation in the history file). This is a true piece of history in exemplary condition.

1975 Carwyn James International XV | G J R ThomasRugby Union jersey match-worn by Gareth J R Thomas versus Newport RFCJersey & Provenance: All white jersey in complete and original condition. Label for Bukta with embroidered Bukta Sportswear logo to chest, opposite embroidered black Newport badge of suspended medallion in yellow background with wings atop, embroidered ‘CENTENARY 1974-75’ below. Black No.3 in canvas white square to reverse.Provenance: the personal collection of Sir Gareth Edwards CBE & family.Gareth Thomas: The tight-head prop for this special match was Gareth J R Thomas who acted as a late replacement for Mike Burton. Gareth was son of JBG Thomas (1917-1997), the celebrated rugby writer and chief rugby writer at the Western Mail.G J R Thomas played 8 times for the RAF in the Inter Services Matches in the 1970s and 1980s. While a Flying Officer stationed at RAF Benson, he played tight head for the RAF v the Army in 1974, that RAF team was captained by Jeff Young. He did not play again for the RAF in an Inter Services match until 1980. He was then a Flight Lieutenant stationed at Brize Norton. In that match he played in the backrow, and he remained in that position for the rest of his RAF career. He also served at RAF Odiham and West Drayton and he played his last Inter Services match against the Army in 1983.Incidentally, Gareth Edwards played for RAF Cyprus against the RAF in 1972 when Jeff Young persuaded Gareth to spend a few days in Cyprus and guest for the local services team. The connections that Gareth had with the RAF and the possible JBG connection may explain why Gareth has this No 3 jersey in his collection. The Match: The match was played on 5th April 1975 at Rodney Parade, it was a Special commemorative Centenary Match for the Newport Club.Newport played in their traditional black and amber hoops. Phil Bennett, Bobby Windsor and Tommy David also turned out for the special match as a tribute to the illustrious history of the Newport club. The International XV won the game, 44-28.Sir Gareth Recalls: ‘It was great to reunite with players like Gareth and others for special rugby matches such as these, where the pressure is off and the occasion was more relaxed’.Auctioneer's Note:Each lot will be accompanied by the auction prospectus, signed by Sir Gareth Edwards CBE.
An ex-RAF Wolf Defender restored and upgraded to a unique specification for the 'urbane warrior' that appreciates both quilted leather and entrenching tools. The Wolf, based on the Defender 90 and 110 Defender, was introduced in 1994 but it took two years of testing, rejection, upgrading and further testing before the Ministry of Defence was satisfied. It was far stronger and more reliable than the standard car on which it was based as a result. An order for some 8,000 Wolf Defenders was placed in 1996 by the Ministry of Defence at a cost of some £40,000 each for the basic Wolf. Some 97 variants were produced and they included the Air Drop, Ambulance, Helicopter Support Platform, Tropical Field Ambulance, Waterised Weapons Mounted Installation Kit and Winterised/Waterproofed Field AmbulanceThe Wolf’s mechanical list is extensive but, in brief, it featured a 113bhp, 300TDi engine with no electronics except for the fuel pump solenoid, rust proofed chassis from new, gearbox cooling system, reinforced front bulkhead, rails and sills, reinforced Salisbury rear axle and standard reinforced front axle with uprated differentials. It's not known how many Ministry of Defence Wolf Defenders were scrapped due to combat damage or quietly sold to foreign armies and NGOs, but most open topped 'canvas tilt' Defenders rarely survived Army use and Royal Navy cars suffered from their proximity to the sea. Far outnumbered in production by their hard-topped siblings, the canvas backed Wolf rarely saw domestic service as the hard top was better suited to the British weather and most were therefore in left-hand drive for overseas use. This 90 Wolf was originally registered in 1997 to the Ministry of Defence and used by the Royal Air Force, bearing the military registration mark KA71AA. We are informed it was stationed in various regions within the UK and the odometer reading, (in kilometres, like all Wolf Defenders), of 117,000km, suggests that the Wolf traversed nothing more arduous than the occasional 'cat's eye' or a motorway rumble strip, whilst being maintained by the diligent technicians on base. Upon decommissioning, it was registered to the first of two civilian keepers on the 1st January 2020, later undergoing a significant programme of works to such a high standard that this Wolf has been likened to a former SAS trooper tailored by Armani, stylish but still capable.Finished in metallic grey with high quality fixtures, the interior is trimmed in quilted black leather with contrasting stitching, polished metal accents and the front seats are heated. The black canvas tilt is lined in cream cloth whilst the rear features high quality woodwork upon which the two quilted leather bench seats for four sit. The front doors are a unique combination of period and luxury and the entrenching tools are a wry nod to the car’s history and capability.Presented to auction with its V5C, an advisory free MOT valid until July 2023 and records of its interesting history, this Wolf is more than just a “tarted up” Defender. It offers a unique opportunity to own a high-quality, luxuriously appointed Land Rover that was built to defend this country.SpecificationMake: LAND ROVERModel: DEFENDER 90Year: 1997Chassis Number: SALLDAA67VA122585Registration Number: R943 VSMTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 25L02599A Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 115100 KMMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images
