ALEXANDER BAXTER,1798, of Napoleonic and Masonic interest, a rare certificate issued by the Glasgow St Mungo’s Masonic Lodge recommending Alexander Baxter to fellow Masons, dated Glasgow 13 January 1798 with silk ribbon and large wax seal,19 x 32cmAlexander Baxter (1777-1841) studied medicine in Edinburgh and on 3 August 1799 received a Commission into the Army as Assistant Surgeon to the 35th Foot Regiment. The Regiment subsequently served in the Mediterranean and, in 1805, Baxter was appointed Surgeon to the Royal Corsican Rangers, where he became acquainted with Hudson Lowe, later Governor of St Helena during Napoleon’s exile. Lowe arranged for Baxter, who had by that time served in the Peninsula and the American War, to accompany him to St Helena in 1816, where he hoped Baxter would become a medical attendant to Napoleon. Baxter remained on St Helena until 1819, and although he met Napoleon a few times, the Emperor would not accept him as a medical attendant and Baxter had to compile medical reports on Napoleon for the Governor on the basis of what he was told by Napoleon’s preferred surgeon, Barry O’ Meara (full details in Arnold Chaplin, ‘A St Helena Who's Who’).Condition report: Minor tears and age marks, see images.
SIEGE OF SEVASTAPOL,1855, an attractive Crimean War rush-seated mahogany chair, the brass back splat engraved, ‘Taken from Sevastapol September 9th 1855 by a private of the 63rd regiment’ 91cm highThe siege of Sevastopol lasted from October 1854 until September 1855, during the Crimean War. The allies (French, Sardinia, Ottoman, and British) landed at Eupatoria on 14 September 1854, intending to make a triumphal march to Sevastopol, the capital of the Crimea, with 50,000 men. The 56-kilometre (35 mil) traverse took a year of fighting against the Russians.Sevastopol is one of the classic sieges of all time. The city of Sevastopol was the home of the Tsar's Black Sea Fleet, which threatened the Mediterranean. The Russian field army withdrew before the allies could encircle it. The siege was the culminating struggle for the strategic Russian port in 1854–55 and was the final episode in the Crimean War.During the Victorian Era, these battles were repeatedly memorialised. The siege of Sevastopol was the subject of Crimean soldier Leo Tolstoy's 'Sebastopol Sketches' and the subject of the first Russian feature film, 'Defence of Sevastopol'. The Battle of Balaklava was made famous by Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' and Robert Gibb's painting 'The Thin Red Line'. A panorama of the siege itself was painted by Franz Roubaud. The nurses who treated the allied wounded during these battles were much celebrated, most famously Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.

BRITISH SCHOOLJason Versus the Spartoian Art Deco-style male nude warrior standing before the emerging Spartoi, oil on canvas76 x 63cm, unframedThe Trial of the Spartoi was the second challenge set by King Aeetes to Jason in order for him to win the Golden Fleece, which Jason and the Argonauts sail to Colchis to recover in order for Jason to stake his claim as the rightful king of Iolcus. In the myth, King Aeetes plants the teeth of a dragon into the ground, from which an army immediately grows out (Spartoi emanates from the Greek word speíro, which means 'to sow'). Jason cunningly defeats the emerging threat with the help of Medea who instructs him to throw a stone into the army. Unable to tell where the stone comes from, the Spartoi turn on, and defeat, each other.Condition report: A few small holes to the canvas. Possible overpainting in places. -- "a cartoonist who is brilliant and very cruel"-- Kelen, Emery Fl. Indian Round-Table Conference. 1 Bl. Titel, 2 Bl. Druckvermerk und 35 kolor. Karikatur-Abbildungen. 38 x 28 cm. Lose Bl. in OSchlangenlederimitat-Flügelmappe (Kanten und Ecken etwas berieben) mit 2 Schließbändern. In OLeinenschuber. In einem Beitrag der University of Nottingham ist über Kelens Werk Folgendes zu lesen (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/conferencing-the-international/representations/caricature.aspx, abgerufen am 26.10.2020): "Emery Kelen (1896-1964) was one of the, if not the, most famous caricaturist of the interwar period. Pulled out of art college and drafted into the Hungarian army during the First World War, Kelen emerged as a lifelong opponent of war. In the 1920s, often collaborating with Alois Derso, Kelen crafted the art of depicting the political and diplomatic scene. Conferences were one of his key sites, with sought-after drawing produced at the 1925 Locarno Conference, the 1933 London Economic Conference, the 1932 World Disarmament Conference, and at the permanent conferencing of the League of Nations in Geneva. Lithographic portfolios could also be commissioned, as with these portraits (individual and table) produced during the first two sessions of the Round Table Conference.Kelen devotes a chapter of his reminiscences of the interwar period, Peace in Their Time (1963), to his coverage of the conference. He dismissed it politically, suggesting the delegates had been selected to create as little nuisance as possible; the sort of people who enjoyed watching white men carrying burdens. But he devoured it socially, relishing the mixes and clashes of personalities. While he clearly had Indian friends, he lapsed frequently into orientalist stereotypes of the irrational Indian, barely separate from the state of nature. Here, he recalled the opening of the conference in November 1930: 'Imagine the House of Lords gone mad. I sat in the balcony listening to King George V opening the Round Table Conference, and spread below me were the great banks of turbans, fluorescent in the Gothic dusk, sulphur yellow, hellish red, poison green, and shocking pink, and when the king had done they came to life and popped around like fireflies.' Added to his usual accentuation of body shape and facial expression came a whole new range of racial colouring. For the few female delegates there could also be a dose of body-shaming and casual misogyny. During the second conference session the Maharani of Baroda organised a charity ball to benefit Charing Cross Hospital. Kelen drew caricatures of the Indians there present and Sarojini Naidu later wrote to her children of the event that: 'Another long interval was occupied by a cartoonist then who is brilliant and very cruel. We had some R.T.C. cartoons then and there to the merriment of the audience; the one of me is terrible but it sold for 15 guineas then and there in aid of children’s hospital.' Kelen later described Naidu as one of the ladies '... who eat Hungarian caricaturists for breakfast. Her generous mouth followed an upward curve and ended in a malicious curl underscored by the shadow of a moustache.' He compared her gait to that of a pouter pigeon and criticised her use of golden jewellery. He admired her political work 'But face to face with my white paper, I became an ugly truth-teller. From the day I drew Mrs. Naidu’s portrait for the benefit of the Charing Cross Hospital, and half of Who’s Who roared, I lost a valued friend ... Fat poetess! I am one with Luther at the Diet of Worms: ‘Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise. God help me! Amen.' - Wohlerhaltenes, sauberes Exemplar des sehr seltenen Portfolios.

German Sports Medals Early 1900s made of sterling and bronze. 2 3/8 x 1 5/8 in. wide, the small soccer pin from 1891 measures 1/2 in. wide, and the display case is 19 1/2 x 15 3/4 in. wide. 22 German sports medals and pins that range from 1909 to 1929, all first, second, and third place awards won by Otto Bremer, a German athlete that we don’t know much about, but judging by the variety of medals, he had to be a tremendous athlete. The pins and medals cover golf, the hammer throw (Schleuderball in German, or sling ball), weightlifting, archery, soccer, gymnastics - even a triathlon (dreikampf) - and there is also a German Iron Cross with a medal depicting Samson (Simson) fighting a lion in the middle. We have not seen any Iron Crosses awarded for sports heroics, so this is indeed an unusual variety of pins and medals. At the bottom of the display case, in the center, there is a German National Sports Badge that was awarded by the army prior to 1937, and we don’t know if Otto had any military service, but he can be seen in the photo wearing many of the pins and badges, and by the dates on the medals, we believe he earned them in the late teens to mid 1920’s. One pin is dated 1891 and was earned for soccer at a local sports club, but we’re not sure if Otto was alive then, so this may have been an early acquisition by him or someone in the family. To give you a sense of size, the Iron Cross measures 2 1/4 in. in diameter, the golf medal measures

Large Embroidered Army Cross 1813/14 (Cannon Cross). Over-sized embroidered version is made of silver-plated and gold-plated bullion. The arms of the cross are made of fine linen fabric with the inscription: "GRATI PRINCEPS ET PATRIA FRANC. IMPS. AUG.". Paper backing is missing. Measures 150 x 150 mm. The purpose of this embroidered cross can only be assumed. The superior embroidered quality however, suggests that it could be a special version for a ceremonial uniform or for a flag. This decoration was certainly made during the period of the award, or in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.

Sehr seltenes Originalexemplar. Schellenbaum (Jingling Johnny) Banner for the Stade Military Airfield Command. Banner features golden yellow silk field representing the flying branch of the German Luftwaffe. Each edge features a silk white border with silver bullion aluminum fringe. The obverse features a bullion Luftwaffe eagle surrounded by a silver aluminum bullion oak leaf wreath with radiating black and white silk rays. Each ray has an embroidered black swastika. The reverse field features the silver embroidered inscription: "fliegerhorst kommandantur Stade" (Military Airfield Command, Stade). The upper edge features a leather attachment strap with silver plated rod and aluminium hanging device.Very attractive, untouched Jingling Johnny banner. In contrast to the Army flags, the Luftwaffe's branch flags base their design on the traditional pattern of the Prussian regimental flags and harken back to the Army of Frederick the Great.Without question, the yellow branch flag of the Luftwaffe is one of the most attractive designs of the Third Reich. With the exception of a few minor blemishes and signs of age, a very attractive specimen in good condition. Very rare original example.
