A programme for the 1915 F.A. Cup Final ('Khaki Cup Final') Chelsea v Sheffield United played at Old Trafford 24th April At the outbreak of World War I sports competitions such as within cricket and rugby were suspended. Yet on the 1st September 1914 the Football League decided to play on with the 1914-15 season. This caused considerable controversy and there were many high profile and vociferous critics of the sport from every walk of life including the brewer Frederick Charrington, the Bishop of Chelmsford, Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Punch Magazine. The 1914-15 F.A. Cup Final, played at Manchester United's ground at Old Trafford, and won by Sheffield United who beat Chelsea 3-0, acquired the sobriquet of "The Khaki Cup Final", owing to the large number of uniformed soldiers in attendance. In addition the Manchester Guardian reported "a number of wounded soldiers, one missing an arm, watched the match from the lower stand." A collection was made at half-time for the British Red Cross. Fully competitive football was abandoned before the following 1915-16 season, with a number of regional substitute competitions inaugurated. The tide of criticism against football begun to turn when the players of the Scottish side Heart of Midlothian enlisted, en-masse into the British Army. The core of the 17th Service Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment was a group of professional footballers, hence the commonly used name of the 'Football Battalion.' They fought at the Battle of the Somme amongst others and hold the distinction of having the first black infantry officer in the entire history of the British Army, namely Second Lt. Walter Tull who before the War played as inside-forward for Clapton, Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town. He was killed in an action in France on 25th March 1918. A number of decorations were issued to the soldiers of the Football Battalion, notably the Cardiff City and Wales international Lyndon Sandoe who was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal with bar and the Military Medal. In the duration of the hostilities the Football Battalion lost over 1,000 men including 462 in one battle, Arras in 1917. Perhaps the most prominent footballer to have lost his life in the First World War was the Blackburn Rovers and England international Edwin Latheron.

Lieutenant General Sir Henry George Wakelyn Smith, 1st Baronet of Aliwal GCB (28 June 1787 – 12 October 1860), known as Sir Harry Smith, was a notable English soldier and military commander in the British Army of the early 19th century. 1916. Proclamation of The Irish Republic. The final two paragraphs of Ireland`s most important document of the 20th Century, including the signatories. Printed by letterpress on poor quality paper of a greyish white shade. The printed area is 11.75 x 18ins. Framed. An exceedingly rare half sheet of the 1916 Proclamation. The proclamation was printed in two parts due to lack of type according to John O`Connor in The Story Of The 1916 Proclamation. The top half was printed first and then the type was reset to print the bottom half. The British soldiers who captured Liberty Hall from the Citizen Army found the lower half frame of type still in the Wharfedale printing press and ran off a small number of copies as souvenirs. O`Connor, q.v., says [these halfsheets] are very rare but one such copy is in Kilmainham Jail Museum"". According to Joseph Bouch, (The Republican Proclamation of Easter Monday, 1916 Dublin, 1936) these half sheets were printed on two different coloured papers. Less than twenty examples of these half sheets are recorded, making it even rarer than the full sheet document.

General Sir J. G. Maxwell`s Uniforms Maxwell’s dress uniforms as Colonel and General of the Black Watch (42nd) Royal Highland Regiment, consisting a levee dress uniform with rank insignnia of a Colonel, and a review order uniform with those of a General. Accompanied by the appropriate kilt, sporran, plaid, trousers, cross-belt with plate, stockings, kid gaiters. In steel trunk with brass plaque engraved “General Sir J. G. Maxwell, K.C.B. C.V.O. C.M.G. D.S.O.” General Sir John Grenfell Maxwell GCB, KCMG, CVO, DSO, PC (11 July 1859 – 21 February 1929) was a British Army officer and colonial governor. He served in the Mahdist War in the Sudan, the Boer War, and in the First World War, but he is best known for his role in the brutal suppression of the 1916 Easter Rising and subsequent execution of rebellion leaders. After ithe Rising started, on 24 April 1916, Martial Law was declared for the city and county of Dublin by the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Wimborne, to allow Court Martial trials of persons breaching the Defence of the Realm Act (DORA), passed 8 August 1914 and to deal with such occurrences as the Rising.Maxwell arrived in Ireland on Friday 28 April as military governor"" with ""plenary powers"" under Martial law. He set about dealing with the rebellion under his understanding of Martial law. During the week 2 to 9 May, Maxwell was in sole charge of trials and sentences by ""field general court martial"", which was trial without defence or jury and in camera. He had 3,400 people arrested, 183 civilians tried, 90 of whom were sentenced to death. Fifteen were executed by firing squad between 3 May and 12 May.Prime Minister H.H. Asquith and his government became concerned at the speed and secrecy of events before intervening to stop more executions. In particular, there was concern that DORA regulations of general court martial were not applied, i.e. a full court of thirteen members, a professional judge, legal advocate and held in public, which could have prevented some executions. Maxwell admitted in a report to Asquith in June that the impression that the leaders were killed in cold blood without trial had resulted in a ‘revulsion of feeling‘ that had set in, in favour of the rebels, and was the result of the confusion between applying DORA as opposed to Martial law. Although Asquith promised to publish the court martial proceedings, they were not published until the 1990s.Maxwell retired in 1922 and died, aged 69, in 1929.

(30)"" JH MacDonnell, Solictor, London WC2;thence by descent. Irish Historical Studies Volume 28, Number 110, November 1992, pp150-170: Michael Collins Collins and The Assassination of Sir Henry Wilson by Peter Hart. The assassination of Sir Henry Wilson was apparently authorised by the IRA and IRB in early 1921 but put on hold due to the Truce of June that year. With the signing of the Treaty the action should have been cancelled; it is therefore a matter of some controversy that it went ahead, possibly with the approval of either Michael Collins or Rory O`Connor. The letter, in this archive, from Dunn to Brian O`Gorman, implying Dunn`s strong link to the Intelligence Office of the Provisional Government in Oriel House, might be evidence that the action was sanctioned by Collins. The killing of Wilson outraged the British Government, and, under immense pressure by Winston Churchill, the Provisional Government were forced to attack the anti-treaty forces using artillery supplied by the UK, thus starting the Civil War.Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, born in Co. Longford in 1864, was one of Britain`s most distinguished army officers, serving as Chief of The Imperial Staff in 1918. He oversaw the British military operations, including the war of terror"" by the Auxiliaries, in Ireland during the War of Independence, and later became a Unionist MP for Co. Down.Rgeginald Dunn and Joseph O’Sullivan were former British soldiers who had served in France, fighting ‘for the rights of small nationalities’; O’Sullivan lost a leg at Ypres. On returning to England they joined the IRA, with Dunn rising to be the commanding officer of London District.JH MacDonnell, son of an Irish Nationalist MP, Mark Antony MacDonnell, was a distinguished London solicitor and member of the Irish Self Determination League. He defended many Irish republicans, including 1916 Rising participants.
